In penalties and penalty yardage.
A whopping 42 accepted penalties leads the NFL and is 7 more than the 2nd most penalized team (Philly). This is 5 more than they had last season thru week 4 (they were still #2). On the flip side, the Steelers also have the most penalties called against their opponent at 39 so it seems this could partly be a result of having flag happy refs the first 4 weeks.
Not only do the Steelers lead the NFL with 42 accepted penalties, but also with 8 declined penalties for a total of 50 flags thrown...8 more than #2 (Falcons). 50 total flags is 10 more than they had last season thru week 4.
Steelers also lead in penalty yardage at 401 which is 47 more yards than #2 (Jags).
Around the league...
There have been 30 less accepted penalties thru the first 4 weeks than last season...seems like more to us because the Steelers games have been the most flag happy games so far. Steelers games have 81 total accepted penalties thru 4 weeks which is 11 more than #2 (KC)...almost 3 more per game than the rest of the league.
Roughing the passer calls are up 80% from last season...21 thru 4 weeks in 2017 vs 38 in 2018.
Defensive Pass Interference calls are actually down significantly. 77 called for 1307 yards thru 4 weeks in 2017 vs 63 for 1073 yards in 2018. The Steelers only account for 1 of those (probably because no DB can get near a WR). Also the total number of DPI flags thrown (including declined) dropped from 90 to 66 which is a 25% reduction.
It should also be pointed out that NE has 19 accepted penalties thru 4 weeks which is the same as Carolina and 3 less than Washington who have both had a bye week. Only the Giants have less accepted penalties at 18. NE also has benefits from 29 accepted penalties against their opponents.
