Steelers hiring McCarthy

I'm confident the Steelers hired McCarthy for two reasons: (1) He has potential to keep the Steelers in their sweet spot (8-10 wins) and (2) they truly believe in his ability to develop a QB. I think they'll draft a QB higher than many of us think this season.
Trade up and reach? Definitely not the year to trade up..

PS, DEI has nothing to do with skin color. It means hiring someone that is not qualified. My 1st choice for our new coach was Marcus Freeman so riddle me that with your racist accusations you POS.
That's not what DEI is either. DEI makes marginalized groups feel welcome, advertises for job openings in communities that are again, marginalized, etc.. You still have to be qualified to get the job. You are confusing Affirmative Action and DEI.

Why are you wasting time here? Don't you have a Klan rally tonight? Or maybe you have to get that appeal letter written to the ICE Gestapo that rejected you. You can read and write obviously from your interactions on this board...so that means you are probably way over qualified for ICE, but one can dream......

I leave early in the morning, have my headphones on at work, and this is the **** I come home to when I sign in? Mann oh MANN. Other day I said they better not hire him and bring back Rodgers. This smacks of total laziness and complacency. Don’t they get that the fans can handle a rebuild but we’re sick and tired of this type of BS. This is no different than the ideology of hiring all those old FA’s that just want one more kick of the can,but you know they’ll never bring you to the promised land.
I wonder how much his contract is for. This is all Rooney. I would love to know who pushed for this.

Now. This all being said. Welcome to The Pittsburgh Steelers Mike. I hope you prove my instincts wrong and show me some fire. It will start with your Assistants. If you bring back noodle armed Aaron I might have a Flipp out. I’m not getting any younger. You better have your **** together.

Well hell I was really wishing and hoping for a Shula/Scheelhaas combo but i'm gonna do my best to look at this as a glass half full.

1) maybe he will bring some discipline back to this team. he did seem to reel in Pickens and his attitude.
2) he has seen some championship games in the 2020's
3)he is an x and O's type coach
4) he can develop a QB
5) should be easy to not resign him at the end of his contract if he ***** the bed.

This is all I got. man I would have been way happier if we would have signed McDermott if we were gonna hire a previous head coach. Only time and DBL malt scotch will tell.

I'm meh on this with the potential to go sour if they run it back with Rodgers. But I don't think they will. Better chance they go after Dak in Dallas.

Anyway, the positive is he's an offensive coach and hires good assistants, that's two things we all wanted. He also won't be a 15-20 year guy, which is something I wanted. Everyone saying this is on Rooney, but he had a template and they just broke it. That's got Omar's fingerprints on it.

Another factor nobody is considering is that the new coach has to hire an entirely new staff and get ready for the Senior Bowl this week. I don't know that they wanted to wait around until after the Super Bowl to get the offseason started.

Anyway, I won't try to defend it or argue against those who hate it, I'm just gonna let it play out. Interested to see who he hires as assistants, who they keep, who they dump, etc. And especially, who they draft.

I don't dislike McCarthy. They should have gone with someone like Shula or Minter. However, this is a big departure from Tomlin. Whether you like it or not, McCarthy knows how to run an offense. He won 12 games under Jerry Jones. That is an accomplishment in itself. Jones is ******* horrible. We will see who the OC and DC are going to be. You still have a chance to get some youth and new ideas. I would be looking at the Seahawks and Rams position coaches for the next OC and DC. Offer Scheelhause the OC, and the Seahawks' secondary coach is supposed to be an up-and-comer, according to an article on this site. As far as QBs are concerned, you can't bring back Aaron Rodgers. I enjoyed watching Rodgers play. It was fun. His physical attributes are just not there. I would make a very serious run at Malik Willis in FA or Ty Simpson in the draft. If the NCAA doesn't lose its lawsuit, then Trinidad Chambliss from Ole Miss would have no option but to go to the draft. Just relax, don't go and jump off the Clemente Bridge yet. Besides, I am saving that leap for when the Pirates win the World Series.
I keep hearing that 12 game reference but for me I look at playoff success. He had 1 win.

The biggest reason I disliked Mike as a coach was his lack of playoff success. That hasn’t changed that want. For me it stinks of underperforming.

Then there is this every time that I picked Dallas for high conference points in my pickem’s they lost. They were the most erratic team. Reminds you of someone?

This isn’t an improvement from Mike this is a lateral move.

Pickens wasn’t under Mike. 😉

Aaron Brooks looked like Warren Moon for a brief period with McCarthy as Saints OC in the early 2000s.

It's easy to say Rodgers would have turned out the same without McCarthy, but we don't know that at all. Rodgers laid playoff eggs with the Packers after McCarthy left as well.

Prescott had arguably the best years of his career under McCarthy.

Dak is the most damning evidence AGAINST the notion. He just amped up his volume and made him throw more. He was less successful in critical situations, more INTs, and ultimately worse performance when it mattered in the playoffs. He was actually better/more competitive under the previous regime than McCarthy's in the playoffs. McCarthy didn't play to Dak's strengths; rather he challenged him to be more analytical with harder reads he just couldn't make. That rigidity does not adapt or develop, and there's no evidence Dak was better for having McCarthy as his coach.

Brooks from 2000-2004:

Year Att Yards TD INT YPA Record
2000 399 2,427 14 10 6.1 10-6
2001 519 3,863 26 12 7.1 7-9
2002 528 3,841 27 13 7.3 9-7
2003 552 4,023 28 18 7.2 8–8
2004 581 4,239 28 18 7.3 8–8

Not screaming development to me. Those are fairly pedestrian stats as an NFL QB goes, average QBR of 86, which was average for the era. Now, if we are trying to say Brooks subsequent decline is because McCarthy left, I think that's a reach given what happened with the Saints as a team, not to mention it's a very small sample. Brooks was no Moon by the numbers, either.

Like I said, McCarthy as some sort of mythical QB developer is a fairy tale.

I could see them taking Simpson in the first round.

Anyone on day 2 would be a reach, IMO. Based on who they've scouted this season:

Cade Klubnik
Garrett Nussmeier
Drew Allar
Carson Beck

Allar has zero clutch factor but just about every tool in the book. I'm fine letting a quality offensive coaching staff try to mold him into a good QB at the pro level. Honestly tired of retread QBs and would rather take a risk on Howard/rookie. If it doesn't work, try again next year until you get someone.

If they think they can acquire a veteran with upside, then try that approach.

After thinking about this, I came to the conclusion that I shouldn’t be surprised considering that this is the same team that wanted Tomlin to come back after the playoff results he put up the last decade.

Klubnick is getting good reviews at the shrine game. Maybe a 3rd or 4th.
For such a highly touted class it fell apart. Some returned to school, some underwhelmed.

Thinking the Steelers won’t find a franchise in this crop..

I was starting to come around with Beck but his propensity to throw those picks is troubling.

They should have just promoted Arthur Smith.

I am just disgusted about the lack of FUTURE direction from this team.

Best I can hope for is that Schefter jumped the gun on this story

Well, too old Art Rooney, a 5-year deal means this is a MINIMUM 4-year experiment to find a QB. It's either fire him or give him an extension in 2030.

One of my friends who is a die-hard packers fan texted me.... "McCarthy!!! LOL"..... that's not a good sign.

Many of us would do the same with Tomlin if the Packers hired him.

Was he just odd?
Threw the coaching staff under the bus.

I going to try to be optimistic.

But first...

What if Coach McCarthy wins a SB in the first two years with Coach Tomlin's players??? BWAHAHAHA!!!

Ok. Back to seriousness.

Hopefully, he can entice Scheelhaase to come in as the OC. It will take some of the bitterness off of this decision. And I'd be extremely impressed if they wrangle the secondary coach from Seattle.

Stay away from Ty Simpson. See what you have in Will Howard and bring in Malik Willis to push him.

Tell the Rooney's that WE MUST HAVE A WR2 in the offense and lure George back to Pittsburgh.

Do all that...and I'll be the supportive fan that I usually am...
