Steelers hiring McCarthy

Not sure why everyone is shocked by the length of the contract.

McCarthy is 62, not 82.

He could easily coach the Steelers for a decade if things go well.

Because the list of 62+ year old coaches starting at a new club in the NFL is packed with countless success stories, I'll start the list here....

On the bright side, McCarthy is miles better than Tomlin. Hey @bermudasteel even with McCarthy we have more of a chance of doing something. That’s how putrid your boy was. 🤣💩. Looking forward to next year and beyond.
Yep. A real offense now....and defense. Get it done Mike!!!

The other guy rehashed it. Don't tell me how to post, son.
I am not your son I am probably old enough to be your daddy. Thankfully I never screwed around in Kentucky…

I wonder if McCarthy will beat his chest and blow kisses to the crowd after a kicker misses a chip shot to give him a win? Doubt it.

No he will just not win playoff games and superbowls you know the reason why they play the game…

Dick Vermeil was about that age with the Rams, and he had been completely out of coaching for years before he took the job.

Your point still has validity, as it doesn't happen often, but it's not like the sample size of coaches being hired in their 60s is what it once was.

McCarthy was my worst pick of the choices. I thought he was good in his "prime", but we need a fresh start with new ideas. If he can get one of the top up and coming OCs then it would be better, but I don't see that happening. I also doubt any of the top up and coming DCs will make a lateral move to come here. I have a bad feeling we will get retread coordinators. Obviously i want to see what Howard can do, but if he sits behind Rodgers another year I don't think that is the worst thing.

I don't dislike McCarthy. They should have gone with someone like Shula or Minter. However, this is a big departure from Tomlin. Whether you like it or not, McCarthy knows how to run an offense. He won 12 games under Jerry Jones. That is an accomplishment in itself. Jones is ******* horrible. We will see who the OC and DC are going to be. You still have a chance to get some youth and new ideas. I would be looking at the Seahawks and Rams position coaches for the next OC and DC. Offer Scheelhause the OC, and the Seahawks' secondary coach is supposed to be an up-and-comer, according to an article on this site. As far as QBs are concerned, you can't bring back Aaron Rodgers. I enjoyed watching Rodgers play. It was fun. His physical attributes are just not there. I would make a very serious run at Malik Willis in FA or Ty Simpson in the draft. If the NCAA doesn't lose its lawsuit, then Trinidad Chambliss from Ole Miss would have no option but to go to the draft. Just relax, don't go and jump off the Clemente Bridge yet. Besides, I am saving that leap for when the Pirates win the World Series.

In the end the choices were Mike McCarthy, Anthony Weaver, or Brian Flores. No one else made it to the in-person interview stage.

McCarthy had three coaches in 5 seasons in Dallas on his staff who are currently head coaches in the NFL. Two other coordinators were former head coaches.

Man think about this for a minute.

Clearly the offense is going to be different moving forward. Hopefully better. Can't be much worse.

McCarthy needs to get an incredible DC. One that doesn't lose much. One that the players would love to play for.
One that knows exactly when to take ping pong tables away.

It is clear to me. Mccarthy needs to hire as DC. Mike ******* Tomlin.!!!
Who is with me????

Based on today's decision - I'd rethink who the real mediocre king was.

Let's wait until Coach Tomlin writes his biography...methinks he was a puppet now and that's why he finally left.

Who cares. Today is a terrible day...
Dude, Tomlin was given far more power in decisions than most coaches get. I think this might explain the McCarthy hire if it happens....they want to reign it back in.

From 2022:
" Namely, hold-over QB Mason Rudolph was given first-team reps at practices. The man who made Mediocre Mason the QB1 for OTA’s was Coach Mike Tomlin, now one of the most powerful figures in all of the NFL. This, according to plugged-in NFL pundits who say the true extent of Tomlin’s power will stun many Steelers’ fans.

This begs the question....did Jeff Fisher turn us down? Barry Switzer not available?

How long does it take for Ole Mikey to board the Rooney private jet and head out to Malibu?

For those who want McCarthy for his "ability to develop" a QB, can you enlighten us on when he's actually done that? Was Rodgers not an outstanding QB prospect before he came into the league? Did he do better holistically as a QB during the McCarthy years or later? How about Dak? Did he actually improve under McCarthy or regress? How did he perform in the playoffs under McCarthy? He also had the chance to work with Alex Smith. Did he do anything with Alex to make him a better QB, or was that actually a good older coach, Andy Reid?

One could easily argue he NEEDS an elite quarterback to succeed, not the other way around. God help the Steelers.

You need to ask these questions to ARII. No one had McCarthy as their top choice, just trying to figure out the rationale why the Steelers made this move. It was also reported that a part of his presentation to teams, McCarthy had info on his QB development over the years.

Wonderful. So that tells me he's a great used car salesman to boot. What could go wrong?

I was just thinking to myself, the upsides to McCarthy are he is a QB builder and offensive minded. Then I saw we signed him to a five year contract.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised. After all, Art II wanted the Tomlin Train to keep rolling even though it's been off the tracks for a decade.
Just another disappointing decision by him.
I think this is it. They have many older vets and MM will be the bridge from MT. Experience, older, can handle the older guys and steps aside in 3-5 years to a one of the coordinators he teaches and grooms. I'm trying to be optimistic. This way the team continues to be competitive and not rebuild from the ground up. I don't see another reason why they went with an older guy when his time as HC shouldn't be a long path like our previous coaches.

Aaron Brooks looked like Warren Moon for a brief period with McCarthy as Saints OC in the early 2000s.

It's easy to say Rodgers would have turned out the same without McCarthy, but we don't know that at all. Rodgers laid playoff eggs with the Packers after McCarthy left as well.

Prescott had arguably the best years of his career under McCarthy.
