Were you on these virtual interviews? I sure wasn’t. You can’t honestly grade the process without knowing how the actual process truly went. None of us can. What the NFL owners know about these guys is far different than what we know about these guys. I am not jumping up and down with the choice but I am also not going to jump off the Clemente bridge over it. There were far worse choices to be made and until we see the whole staff it isn’t worth getting upset.

We will see what the coaching staff looks like under McCarthy…if it’s still smaller than the average staff and the quality of it is poor, that’s two straight coaches doing it and you half to ask who is at the root of that…
It is an initial screening process that yielded no in person interviews. Outside of the Rooney rule and Mike. Which one of the Rooney Rule options didn’t have a virtual.
Oh I damn sure can honestly grade it. A quick process with extremely limited options. You can buy in if you wish your option, but I know it was insufficient because they already had their man picked out.
I will let individual posters decide if they are getting upset but sure nobody is jumping off a bridge.
At the same time nobody should mistake this process with one that was thorough. Far from it.
Far worse choices shouldn’t be the gold standard of measurement it should be a process that takes an in depth look at its choices and picks the best candidate.
Knowing they didn’t formally interview Klint or Nate, etc. I can 100 percent feel confident their agenda isn’t the same as mine.
You seriously think some other team was going to scoop Mike McCarthy up if the Steelers didnt?? I mean if you had to put something of value on it??

I am not saying you aren’t right but they also may be privy to things we don’t know about some of these candidates. We are not the only team not hiring them. Unless we are in the room where it happens it is all conjecture.
? We are well versed with who was available and who they didn’t interview as well as the extremely quick process.
Isn’t that enough knowledge ?

Again without knowing what they already I am not trying to judge it. How much preparation did they already have? A lot, some I doubt it is none. The Rooneys are well connected. Again I won’t say you aren’t right. I think the league schedule also played a factor right or wrong. Give your coach as much draft and free agency prep as possible. We have big decisions to make.

Patrick Graham a possibility at DC? What a joke. Our coaching staff could sub in as offensive lineman, though.
I get that. Im asking you do you think McCarthy was ever a serious candidate for any other team other then the Steelers?? I mean at this point in guess it really doesnt matter. It is what it is and we all just have to hope for the best at this point.

I’ve been trying to talk myself into thinking this was a good hire. I’ve failed!
I absolutely do not think this was a good idea to go against the tried and proven blueprint so they could hire a 62 year old twice fired retread.
All his time in GB with a very much in his prime Aaron Rodgers and very good rosters and only got to ONE SB.
Then it was on to Dallas with a very good QB in Dak Prescott and WR CD Lamb and a good roster and couldn’t smell a SB.
This has disaster written all over it!

I’ve come to the conclusion that I can’t hold Dallas against him. That place is a coaching graveyard and Jerry Jones is a franchise destroyer
Your point about 1 title only and 1 Super Bowl appearance with Rodgers in his prime in Green Bay is very valid

What harm would it have caused had they not made this hire and instead flown to LA and interviewed both Chris Shula and Nathan Sheelhase?

The last line is it. He wasn't the Steelers best or worst candidate. Maybe we're overrating the other candidates. Poni (yeah I know, his reports are always wrong) said Shula had a bad interview and the Steelers didn't think Scheelhaase was ready to be a head coach. While that's easy to dismiss, McVay is the best coach in the NFL, maybe the rest of the NFL feels the same way the Steelers did.
Retreads: Harbaugh, McCarthy, Stefanski, Saleh
Stefanski is arguably the worst candidate on this list. I know a lot think he's some sort of offensive genius and he does have a playoff win while coaching from his basement--.446 win %. Saleh, geez, talk about a DC only, not HC. The Jets are also a joke of a franchise, but a .357 win %. Harbaugh couldn't win a Super Bowl with an MVP-level QB and the Giants are trusting him over the next offensive mastermind to develop Dart. Same with Saleh and No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward.
New hires: Minter, Hafley
Minter was a nepotism hire, previously working with the Ravens. His defensive qualifications are good, but if he didn't work for Baltimore does he get hired? Hafley was as well as Miami's new GM was with the Packers. Hafley was 22-26 at Boston College.
The Giants took the Steelers route.
Atlanta and Tennessee took a chance on coaches are good, their previous franchises were just awful.
The Ravens and Dolphins went with familiarity.

The Steelers needed to be more comprehensive in their search, there's no denying that. However, I think we may be giving these other teams too much credit in their search efforts and also, maybe the Rams assistants aren't as good as we thought.
Yeah, I had been hearing they didn't have a Ben Johnson among the head coaching candidates for this year so I think most of us may be overreacting. I guess it really just matters at the end of the day the coordinators and assistant coaches that will be around him. I think.that will change a lot of people's opinion about the hiring.
