Steelers Exercise Fifth-Year Option on Dupree

Steelers need him, regardless of what the fans think of him. They are thin on defense as it is. The money seems large for this year, but they are between a rock and a hard place with him. I don't think there are better options right now. Let's hope he gets it together.

I'm not sure how I feel about this...but seeing the depth behind him (we have none) it makes sense.

I'm glad to hear this. Way too early to give up on a young player like Dupree, who has 1000x the physical skill set Jarvis Jones had.

Agree about the skill set - 265 lb. guy who can run. But he never beats an offensive tackle - ever. His sacks and stuffs come when he is blocked by a TE or RB, or is unblocked.

And that is not a good thing.

They should switch both, watt should be on the strong side where he would help a Lot more dropping in coverage while Dupree concentrated on becoming a decent rushing specialist

I tend to agree. Bud worked really hard last offseason on getting better at rushing and stopping the rush. Then, they had him dropping into coverage quite often and he didn't get to really utilize what he had done in the offseason. Hopefully, he is working as hard this offseason as he did last year. If so, I expect to see significant improvement. The dude does have talent and athleticism.

Not to mentioned supposed injury(s) slowed his year. If he can stay a little healthier we could see a more consistent year.

1. They don't have anyone else.
2. More of what I have often accused the Steelers FO of in the past several years. Keeping a draft bust around too long in the hope that a switch goes off and he becomes good instead of making the FO look stupid. Hasn't worked yet. (Ziggy Hood, Jason Worilds, the Jones Brothers Jarvis and Landry, Dri Archer)

Jason Worilds I considered a more incomplete than a bust. He did ok, and retired early. Not because nobody wanted him. Damn sure wasn't a star, but a bust I think is pushing the envelope.

Landry wasn't a top pick. Won some games, and has improved although a marginal talent in some eyes. Not sure he can be considered a bust, he is still sticking.

Hood, isn't he still floating around? I give you a push there, he didn't do enough for us. Ditto Archer. Both way under performed...

Compared to Dupree, Worlids was an All Pro. Dude was the top rated OLB in FA before he decided to retire from football.

Ziggy Hood is making millions of dollars with Washington. Hardly a bust. If a guy doesnt play like Bruce Smith or Von Miller, that doesn't make them a bust.

Worilds only retired because no one offered him the big FA contract he thought he was going to get. In five years with the Steelers he put up a GREAT one-half of one season, coincidentally the year before he was due to be tagged. Then after a major pay raise he went back to being the underachieving Jason we knew before in his last year here. Other teams rightly figured that was the Jason Worilds they were going to get, so no one offered him the big money he was expecting and he "retired".

Ziggy did very little while he was here although I will agree that DLB's 3-4 we were running at the time was seemingly not the best fit for him and he's better at DT than DE that he had to play here.

I guess you gotta pick it up but it's a lot of money for someone who is largely unproven. I don't think he's worth much more than 5-6M/year max and this option gives him the leverage to force a tag in 2020 or demand something silly like 8-9M/year.

Agree. That's fine enough and if he wants $8-$9M a year then he has a chance to improve his game and show he's worth it.

Is this Bizarro World? Opposite Day? Did you see Bud Dupree play football last year? They just exercised their option to pay him 9 million ******* dollars? He's been terrible! As bad or worse than Mike Mitchell. A very big reason our defense was weak.

I thought they were just waiting for June 1st to come around so they could cut him. No, now this cap-strapped team wants to give a piss-poor 1st round bust linebacker 9 million extra dollars! The post-Roethlisberger years aren't gonna be pretty.

Like I said earlier, this is another case where I think they keep a guy around hoping he'll get better so it doesn't look like they made a mistake. Been happening a lot the last few years.

Did you read the article or any of the comments?

2018 is his 4th year. If they dont like what they see this year, they can cut him with zero liability. If he does have a good year, and seems to have become what they thought he could, they get l, at least, one more year at a decent OLB price and can work on a longer deal. They aren't paying him ****, yet.

The only downside of this is if he gets injured. They would then, be fuckex.

Situation is no different then what they did to Shazier. They picked up his option. Since he was injured, that 5th year became guaranteed.

3 years is plenty for me to see that spending 9 million dollars on a fourth year from Bud Dupree is like lighting it on fire.

True "zero liability" would have been to not exercise the option. He's a liability 95% of the time he's on the field.
