Steelers 1st Round Pick

So……you’ll have to explain this one to me. How do you figure Troy was a below average RT last season? I thought he played well as basically a rookie in a position he had never played before. After all….he was an LT.
And what do you base your statement on that he’s a pro bowl guard? Considering that he has never played guard in the NFL and he played over 90% of his snaps as a LT with the Huskies and got drafted because of his play as LT. in the first round.

Yet you have him as a pro bowl guard even though he’s basically never played the position in the NFL or College.
So coming out of the draft, almost every draft publication had him expected to be moved to guard or a RT. He didnt have the traits they look at for LT.

A bunch of steelers insiders have been floating the team's thoughts on moving him to guard the past few weeks.. most sources are banned from this site, but just google "fautanu to guard steelers" and you will get some non radio links

I don’t know much about Iheanachor, but I started watching film on him. He has some athletic abilities that are huge pluses. His footwork. He is fast and agile and can box out. His arm length and physicality, he’s a horse. This guy is going to be a left tackle. James Campen is a much better line coach than Pat Meyer. I will hold out any more opinions until camp/preseason. I feel this may be a sleeper pick that will pay out over the next couple of years and not right away.

This front office is pure garbage. We have 12 picks in what's considered a well below average draft. Do we use some of those picks to move up and get a potential difference maker? Do we fill a glaring position of need (WR, S,)? Nope. Just sit back stroking each other in the war room and draft yet another 'project'. lol.

Somebody please tell Rooney that this isn't 1972 and the student body right is no longer a thing.

The press conference was horse **** and again no one asks the tough direct question. Omar and McCarthy are acting like this was THEIR guy all along. Horse ****. You were on the phone with Lemon. I dont doubt he was next on their board. But he was not their guy.
He was their available guy

OT is a position of need too

I'm not a fan of Kahn as GM, not sure how alot have been trying to compare him to Colbert, but maybe we did try to trade up and the teams in front of Dallas didn't want to trade back.

You don't take the 7th lineman off the board in the 1st rd. And you certainly don't use a 1st rd pick on a guy that's basically been playing football for 2 years.

But I'm sure the diehards and media will all say this is the best pick ever, and after Saturday will say this is the best draft ever. Just like every year.

He had more college experience than Broderick Jones though, maybe just maybe he has a higher floor than we initially think.

Also the jump from the 7th/8th lineman (lomu)to the 9th is way higher than the jump at other positions in this particular draft.

Who cares about the semantics of it. The draft is a crapshoot and I'm not sure you can prepare for every possibility. So many are saying it's an embarrassment and all that. I'm not embarrassed. The Steelers may have gotten the much better player with a better future. I just remember all the fuss to this day when they drafted Jarvis Jones and his lousy RAS score. Helll, I never heard of that before they drafted him. But it meant something, because he got to the NFL and didn't do shiit. This Lemon kid, not even taking into account the way he presents himself, doesn't score that great in RAS. I think in watching the NFL for 50 years you gotta have special traits to be a special WR, and it doesn't seem this kid has them. We'll see, but the Eagles may have saved the Steelers from themselves.

I think people on here are still stuck in the Tomlin years. Meyer was terrible. Tomlin was becoming famous for trying to pound square pegs into round holes. McCarthy has some good coaches. Everything on this team will be reevaluated.

I'm calling him "Max Anchor".

I don't see the project some are referring to. He's a solid RT both pass pro and run blocking skills look above the line...

Moving Big Troy to LT, his natural position, is the probable solution up front.

Get an OG and they're A-ok.
The fact that he was considered a bottom 1 top of 2 prospect with 5 total years of experience in the sport is a testament to this kids athletic ability which must be through the roof. However, I just find it hard to believe that someone with so little experience is ready to perform against NFL edges next year. Sorry.

I'm okay with how it played out. Like some others, I was not super enamoured with the WR's, Lemon included.

With every college in the country using 3 STARTING WR's, there are so many WR's in every draft, that you can find good ones in later rounds.

Most teams this year seemed to stick to the boards. Not a lot of surprises or reaches to potentially push down a stud to us so we were stuck picking #21.

The only time I was mad during the first round was at the Ravens pick. I know it was a long shot, but I was hoping maybe having Baines on the board would tempt them enough to pick him over the Penn State guard. I really felt if that kid got past the Ravens, he was our pick.

But hey, that's been the story with us and Ravens forever. We both know how to draft well and we often look at the same type of players.

Project 2027 is still in motion (thanks McVay!!!).

We have 4 more picks in the next 70. I like finding a DB, WR, OG out of those 4 picks.

That will really fill out the roster I think.

Liked his video. He seems to have good hands.
I was going to say I like his feet/quickness/agility, but his hands need work.
lol

I thought his hands weren't great either. Some OL guys have "heavy hands" and some don't. He doesn't. But his feet are amazing.

It's discount Lane Johnson. Bigger, a little less quick, moves similarly. Just hope it's Costco Lane Johnson and not Temu Lane Johnson.

Story seems to be the Steelers wanted WR Lemon. I just don't get that one.

I'm not a scout so I'll start with that but Lemon is 5-11, 190 and runs a 4.5 40 speed. If they want that type of player, that is Roman Wilson size and Wilson is faster. Why have they refused to give him a shot but then look to use a first round pick to draft his duplicate???? Personally, I'm glad we didn't get Lemon because I don't see him as the difference maker.

What am i missing?

I'd be far more upset with this pick if we had a franchise QB in place, but we don't, so rebuild the Oline. We don't need 3 WR's without a QB to throw them ball. We have the 4th and 24th highest paid WR in the NFL on our roster without a QB. Having a good Oline is going to help a young QB(if we ever find one) way more than having a bunch of good WR's, ask Joe Burrow.

The Steelers have 12 picks and probably 6-7 roster spots. They need to deal some of those and improve their draft position(s). Otherwise there’s going to have to hope several of their picks clear waivers and can be signed to the practice squad. I’m wondering if they tried last night or are regretting not trying to?

I agree. I mean, I hate to break it to everyone, but if Mendoza doesn't transfer to Indiana, Omar Cooper Jr. is NOT a first round WR. He'd be in the middle of all the 2nd and 3rd rounders we are now looking at.

There are just SO MANY wide receivers now every draft. It's one position we seem really good as scouting, so trust the work/board and let one fall into your laps at pick #53 or pick #76.

I just don't think offensive tackles as athletic as Max Iheanacho just exist anywhere else except the first round and that's why it's probably the smarter pick in the long run for this organization.

Lemon won't be anything special in the nfl. Probably be a better rapper than nfl receiver.

I think when you have a regime change, you want a LOT of new bodies in camp to force the old guard to play by the new coach's standard.

If the positional coaches want a bunch of 6th and 7th rounders that they like to try and push or threaten roster spots of guys currently on the roster, go ahead. Create that competition and create the urgency to prove-it to the new coaching staff.

I have no problem with trading up using a 6th or 7th pick if we think it's worth it, but I wouldn't force it.

Two of the tackles were already taken with high RAS scores.

Here is an interesting A I comparison:

Historical OT Rank
Draft Year

Max Iheanachor
9.91

My mindset was BPA of need. But if you went BPA of what was available, Max could make a case for BPA for highest potential upside.

I'm cracking up reading some of these posts. People acting like they should be sitting in Khan's chair instead of him.
