New to the forum. Steeler fan since the 1970's

James Harrison:
1st year = 1 sack
2nd year = 3 sacks
3d year = 0 sacks

Jason Gildon (Steelers all time sack leader)
1st year = 2 sacks
2nd year = 3 sacks
3rd year = 7 sacks

Jarvis Jones
1st year = 1 sack
2nd year = 2 sacks
3rd year = ?? sacks

Lets give these new guys a chance is really all I'm saying.

you're new here.
it doesnt work that way.

by the time a rookie LB steps on the field, he should have 12 sacks, 4 passes defensed, 2 forced fumbles, 3 fumble recoveries, 18 QB hurries and no less than 27 tackles for loss.

says so in the pamphlet delivered to your email address

"all we are saaaaying is give Jones a chance" sing it like Lennon!!!

James Harrison - Undrafted.

Jason Gildon - I think he was a 3rd rounder.

Jarvis Jones - Do we need to go there?

I've been one of his harshest critics. However, I agree. But I don't think Gildon (3rd round) or Harrison (UFA) are good comparisons. He is a first round pick. He should be the best or the 2-4 best coming out of college at his position. I expect more out of Bud Dupree than Chickillo, don't you? A better comparison is Heyward who looked like a bust right up until a bout 10-16 more games than Jarvis has played. I think people use the stats to make the argument about Jarvis. However, it is more those of us who have an eye for talent in terms of getting off blocks, speed/closing, and strength (I noticed day one his frame wasn't right, he has wrists like a wr) that have concerns about him being a bust.

Welcome to the best site on the net Tommy.

One thing you will learn quickly here a lot of people feel very strongly that Jones is a bust. The site almost burned down when he was drafted because of the pure hate for the selection. Only Dri Archer may be hated by more. Hopefully you have thick skin cause this thread could turn for the worst ha..

Attention certain members.. don't turn this into a flame war or you're getting a vacation. You've been warned.

There is getting to be more "watch what you say or you are banned" statements being made. Is that really what we/ admin wants?

Changing the environment of this forum is our number one priority. That starts with stopping flame wars by members that try their best to start them. We want to build this forum back up - not run members off after they start a thread without knowing how it'll be taken here. The only thing I've banned anyone for is name calling and it was only 2 days off. Buff rid us of some non-stop problem members.

And God knows, Jarvis Jones is a hot button here.

I understand that, but people have to be a little thicker skinned than that. Many are critical of my statements, but I don't lose sleep about it. If someone gets overly personal/ rude crack him/ her right away, no warning. Gone. That sends the message more than telling people to watch themselves. IMO

Exactly. Not to mention:

James Harrison:
1st full year- 4 games started at LB
2nd year- 3 games started
3rd year- 1 game started

Jason Gildon:
1st year- 1 game started
2nd year- 0 games started
3rd year- 13 games started

Jarvis Jones:
1st year - 8 games started
2nd year - 3 games started

In much fewer games and more limited playing time for their first two years, both of those guys had more sacks than Jar Jar.

Hammering someone that has been around here for a year is a lot different than hammering someone who has three posts and doesn't know how to take people. Thick skin is required around here, that's for sure. But for years we haven't been able to expand the forums because as soon as someone new posts something they get ran off by ******** who can't be respectful. I threw the warning out there because I don't want this to turn into a flame war about Jarvis Jones. It wasn't directed at you, and your name didn't cross my mind.

Supe summarized it already - there's NO DAMN way that a Steeler rookie should be less than 6'2 - weigh no less than 247lbs - bench 225 519 times. If he doesn't have 18 sacks, 238 QB hurries, 312 tackles, 75 forced fumbles and 96 passes defensed - he's a BUST...

So you're saying that they had less responsibility, had less reads to know, less information to process in the same amount of time and as rooks were given the opportunity to sit back and learn the defense while watching experienced players?

Just another perspective. Not bustin your balls.

This SHOULD be the year we finally decide on Jarvis Jones.

The team is handing him the job. There is no other ROLB on the roster other than (realistically) James Harrison, whom the team has already said will be in a reduced roll. Moates is a distant Plan B/C.

His highest required ability this year is availability. He HAS to stay healthy. Not dinged up. Not 90%. Not in/out of the lineup. No hamstring pulls or sore shoulders or sitting out Wednesday's practices. The kid is 25 years old. He should be a smooth running athletic machine right now.

If he can stay healthy, then we can actually see some week-in, week-out play and make a final evaluation of his worth to the team and whether ROLB spot is a weakness, a strength or something in the middle.

Or maybe that when they got on the field they made the most of their chances.

Making the best of your opportunities as a rookie ... That's Woodley. The others, Jarvis included, played like rookies. Some had more success; and I'd imagine it was because they were put into situations where they could succeed. Kind of like they did with Tuitt and Bryant last year. Jarvis was thrown into the pool and told to swim. Now, I'm not saying he would have been better served sitting or that he will be an All-Pro someday and not a bust. I'm firmly in the "jury is still out" category. However, I see the Foreman motioning to the Bailiff.

And truthfully, it's not that I'm a big fan of Jarvis or the pick. Just hate to see any first round bust for the Steelers. So, I'll root for Jarvis to turn it around this year. If not, they may be spending another first/second round pick on an OLB next year.

I don't think we lost our best posters because of Timmons. Dri Archer on the other hand...

A long time ago (24 hours after the draft) I decided that I'd look at JJ as if he were a 3rd rounder an not a 1st cause that's the only way I could level my expectations with his ceiling and don't live the rest of my life hating the pick

I did not like the pick when it was made. I have not seen anything to make me like it more since then. I would be quite happy to be wrong and watch Jarvis become a great player that just had a rough start. I think the odds on that happening are about the same as Joe Biden and intelligent being in the same sentence on a routine basis.

I suspect the steelers might be concerned with how Jarvis is developing or not as the case maybe. There was nothing negatively said other than Jarvis knows where he is and what he has to do by Joey Porter. Tomlin or Colbert made the comment that they were picking guys that would make the team better and that if that means someone on the roster gets replaced so be it. I suspect they are not real happy with the performance of some of the folks on the team and have drafted guys that could bump some under achievers from the roster.

In fairness, that draft sucked. The alternatives to Jarvis (guys like Eifert and Patterson) haven't exactly set the league on fire thus far.
