I was not able to watch the game. I have heard all about these horrible calls the refs made. Can some tell me how many there actually were, please? Thanks in advance.
There was a article by a publication (Bleacher Report? Sporting News maybe?) Don’t know which one, but there were 11 plays with obvious recognizable infractions not called or called with no visible evidence. This was total between both teams.
1. Flagrant offside by Chargers RT, no whistle blew, Rivers throws a TD pass. Both Tackles were getting quick pre snap releases throughout the game.
2. Holding penalty against Foster, where the defender actually locked Foster’s arm during the block. This occurred on the opposite side of where Conner was, who had a 30 yard run to the 25 yard line.
3. Al called for holding during a screen pass. Negated a positive gain to set up a short line of gain for a 1st down. Could have been considered a hold, but Bud and TJ was getting held much worse all game without any calls. In fact only Ola was able to get the holding call, because he got arm whipped right next to Rivers.
4. The very next play, on a punt return for a TD, Brian Allen was obviously pushed from behind right in front of the official. No call. There was another block in the back (they said a LB but tape seems to show Rosie Nix) that went uncalled further up field.
5. The FG attempt to win the game, Joe Haden was called offsides when replay shows he wasn’t. 2 other Steelers (IMO) were in the neutral zone, but Warren Sharp’s video analysis obviously shows from the 22 video right behind the back judge the LS moving and rotating the ball before the snap to flinch the defense in jumping early. That is considered a flagrant violation and would’ve resulted in a 10 sec run off on the clock and then OT. Per the video, the LS did it on each subsequent FG attempt and caused the defensive line to jump the snap. All with no calls from either the back judge or head-linesman.
Even from the first attempt, had the offside been legit, Haden was blatantly held across his neck and shoulder and pinned down upon crossing the line of scrimmage. That wasn’t called either.
The others infractions or lack of one being called were related to defensive holding by both teams. Hargraves got away with a hold on a guard and one of Rivers 3rd and long first down passes, the receiver (not Allen) pushed off to gain separation was missed completely.
There was discussion this morning on the morning drive about, a play I didn’t recall, but it involved Fort on a 3rd down stop. It appeared he knocked the ball out of the players hand and it was called an inc pass. However, the video shows that it was actually caught with two feet down and a football move before it got punched out. So that should have been ruled a fumble, of which Williams or Hilton picked up, before the whistle blew.
In any case, the game grade for the officials are not released publicly or even to the teams. So we will probably never know what the NY offices determined. One thing was said on the radio that Ninovich’s crew won’t be playoff eligible. Although that may be because of the other blown call a few weeks before.
