Downgrading him to a lesser unit in the time frame they did means that he did not suffer a catastrophic spinal cord injury.
Pain? I'm pretty sure that's a given for anyone playing professional football.
And I brought up the broken bone thing to illustrate the difference between what CAN in the least likely scenario happen, and what WILL in any given situation happen.
You can literally lose your leg from breaking it if you happen to hit the bad luck Powerball..........but there's no reason to expect that to happen and no one realistically would.
The same is true of the injury and procedure that Shazier underwent. The likelihood that he does anything but walk normally and lead a normal life would again be like winning the bad luck Powerball and isn't really worth worrying about to anyone that understands the situation.
Umm, I guess I'm sorry that you don't have to worry about the man being in a wheelchair for the rest of his life???

Sorry to get involved here, but I have now seen four different posters ask you for what your PROFESSION is in relation to the medical field and have now seen you respond to every other single thing said to you......other than that one question. If you're going to wax on the subject, and as to not come off as trolling, please advise.
I've been in the healthcare/medical field now for 20 years. But I'm a paper pusher. I'm well versed in contracting, managed care, finance, medical terminology and coding, etc. Pretty much everything that is NOT the clinical portion of the field.
Could I spout off here and make some general observational guesses as to what going to happen with Ryan based on what has been reported so far? I could, just like a few others have,
Would it be anymore insightful or correct vs someone that is in the legal field, insurance field, marketing, research, etc.? Nope.
The fact that I could spew ICD-9 / ICD-10 and CPT codes to align with any ailment, or bust out a lessor known specialty like Physiatry, doesn't make me an expert when it comes to spinal injuries/surgeries/treatments/recoveries. Just like staying at a Holiday Inn Express or Switching to Geico won't either.
As stated earlier by another poster, each and every injury/medical condition varies from patient to patient
My last comment is just from using logic, and has zero to do with my being a MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL.
But I've never seen football teammates and/or football opposing players wear T-Shirts and say endzone prayers or wear said player's jersey for a player with a broken arm, concussion, ACL tear, or any other injury EVER to have occurred in sports.......other than a severe spinal injury where paralysis is feared.
It also seems they are being awfully tight-lipped with confirming/denying Shazier having feeling in his lower body. We only have the reports of football media people saying he does. No doctor, Shazier family member, or a member of the Steelers organization has confirmed this. This would seem to indicate to me that he currently does not, and they're holding out hope that he will regain, but don't want to say anything definitively until they know definitively.
Merely fan speculation, but I sincerely hope for the absolute best for Shazier.
