I don't think it will but have no problem with the adjustment.

This is actually the way to improve the rule. It was only imposed for Head Coaches changes, so there wasn't a large pool below to interview, and some people would be the 'token' interview for multiple teams. Forcing a minority interview is great because it will increase the size of the pool and allow more qualified coaches, a chance to compete for a job.

As long as they got rid of the draft picks, I'm all for it!

This is better than the draft pick rule. Hopefully NFL teams will do their research looking for head coaches and coordinators rather than interview the same guys over and over. There are a lot of bad HCs out there.

There will still be a number of “token” interviews.

Each token interview gives the interviewee exposure to the process and gets their name out there. Things that would not occur if the same round of "Josh McDaniels interviews" happen every year. In that light, it can't hurt.

Exposure to the process is very important for a lot of candidates that could be an after thought.. I don't know if Mike Tomlin gets the HC job if he's not given the chance to interview. Mind is a little fuzzy, but I don't recall him being a hot candidate besides Grimm, Rivera and Whisenhunt at the time, but he blew the FO away.

The man can talk. He presents well and sounds good. Now, if only he coached to that level.

Last season was one of his best seasons as a head coach. To be in the PO hunt in weeks 16 & 17 with Duck and MR at QB was very impressive. The defense was stellar and helped a lot with getting at 8-8. He was mentioned for HCOTY until the train went off the rails. Got to give credit where it's due.

I agree completely. Credit there, for sure.

The rest of the resume, however.

I'll play the devils advocate, there are 32 owners out there, and I would assume they have a relatively high level of intelligence or they wouldn't have what it takes to own a multi-million dollar business.

It's an assumption on my part, but I'm guessing they would know all the qualified candidates for a particular job and research it, as they do every year for the draft.

Do you honestly believe they would ignore a minority candidate while knowing they are the best qualified person for the job?

Seems short sighted to me.

Matt Patricia, Vic Fangio and Matt Rhule are Head Coaches ... Eric Bienemy is not. In the Fangio, the Broncos hired him instead of the guy who had just called the offense that not only kicked their *****, but produced that year's NFL MVP. In the case of Rhule, he was hired over the guy who had just called the Super Bowl winner's offense. Oh, and Rhule's previous NFL coaching experience? One year as an ASSISTANT Offensive Line coach for the Giants. So, to answer your question .... Yes, it happens.
I will also note that it happened to some very fine Caucasian coaches too.

The NFL is a microcosm of America as in the sense White Men are the most oppressed demographic. We not only have to do better we have to overcome racism and out due others more and more on what seems like a daily moving target. There isn’t a single minority born after 1980 that has experienced anything remotely like being a white man.

My only question is why is the word RULE in all caps in the title?

Wow. I think you vastly overestimate the football knowledge of some of these owners. I agree they would not intentionally ignore a minority but I think many are not as up on the options as you might think and not all of them have made their own money or businesses.

What I don’t get is for example the Raiders they wanted John Gruden and nobody else. How does this make the token minority guy feel knowing that they are only there to have the box checked? Now your forced to interview 2 people that don’t have a shot why waste their time?

So, who did the Cowboys interview? We know they wanted McCarthy from the start. I agree, btw.

The Rooney rule was horrible and now this is just as horrible. I guess when all 32 teams have black HCs and black owners this crap will stop. Diversity really just means anyone but a white guy. Nobody will care about diversity when everything is one color.. black. Just stupid.

Because the dumb **** that started the thread must have hit the cAPs button or something of that nature........................................................

I don't know about that, I just think you hire the guy you believe can win, no matter his or her (yes it's coming) skin pigmentation.

I disagree Vader. This is not a quota. It's not affirmative action. It doesn't say you have to hire a minority. Teams aren't gaining draft slots for hiring minorities. It's just a way to get minorities interviewed. It's up to the teams who they will hire. Personally I thought just having the rule for the Head Coach position kind of stunted the ability to grow minority coaches throughout the league, and created too few viable applicants for head coaching positions. Now there is a pathway for it.

Rooney RULE modification

If I’m a black man I’m highly offended by this rule. Reading between the lines it tells me the reason I was interviewed and hired was not due to my qualifications, but minority class. I’d always be wondering about that and bet black coaches have that doubt in their minds. I don’t want a rule that states a minority has to be interviewed but would rather know that the owner brought me in on my qualifications. Just sayin’

Going forward, teams must interview at least two external minority candidates for head coaching positions,

Additionally, teams must interview at least one minority candidate for coordinator jobs

In addition to the changes to the rule pertaining to coaching staffs, the league will tweak its hiring procedure for front offices. Franchises must open their senior-level executive jobs — including team president positions — to minority and/or female candidates

I beg to differ. If it isn't a quota....what is it ?

I just don't get how some of you think. Some of the same people who were up in arms about the third round pick improvement are cool with this. Some of you were like the Pats are gonna game this. How? They are going to hire a less desirable candidate to move up 6 or 10 spots in the third. Cmon. Now with this, you look at the coaching candidates. You love Fred White. You have him in your office after his interview. You want to close, but you cannot. Because you have to interview at least 2 more candidates. Meanwhile he is on a plane somewhere that interviewed two quota candidates. Now you got a real world problem that COULD actually happen folks.
