Roethlisberger, Steelers Agree to New Contract

We are doomed , the sky is falling, etc...

Use whatever ratings/stats you like, he has never played better than he did last season. Anyone who watched the games knows that.

Has he ever played better than last season in the playoffs? I'm sure you watched him throw for 334 yards, even higher than his league-leading 310 per game in the regular season. By God he must have been awesome!

As I mentioned above, Ben's best quarterback rating came in 2007. The weapons and the system are clouding your judgement about Ben just now entering his prime. His statistical accomplishment of tying for the league lead in passing yards in 2014 happened because the Steelers threw the ball over 600 times. Ben has been a great quarterback for a long time, but the end is coming. His physical abilities are indeed already breaking down, as evidenced by his reluctance to run with the ball -- 27 yards rushing with a long of 8 this past year, compared to 204 yards with a long of 30 in 2007.

The fact that you are hoping for three more good years should be enough for you to admit that your original statement was wrong.

Maybe entering his prime was overstating it, but he still is a good QB with a lot of football left in him. Thirty-three is not too old for a QB, even though he has taken a beating. That's why I'm hoping for three more healthy years as anything can happen. Look at Troy, hit the wall hard and they want him to retire. I want a better return with this contract and think he will deliver, as he has done throughout his career here.

As I mentioned, the 27 yards is an example of his declining mobility, an example along with other factors. So is his 0.8 yards per rush. His PHYSICAL running ABILITY is not as good as it used to be. I'm glad you can understand that.

LOL...he is a QB right? if he was Vick i might agree with you. While Ben early in his career scrambled around more for yards the decline in yards rushing could easily be the result of early on in his career he didn't reach a third or fourth option in his progression. Maybe he just took off and ran sooner than he does now....you something called experience.

Look at it this way, the guaranteed money goes in the first three years. If Bens play declines after the three years you can cut him for no cap charge. Is a good frigging deal

The league is now a passing league look at Manning and Brady how long they have lasted and neither is as mobile as Ben.

the rules protect the QB and he doesn't get as much abuse as say a WR or RB.

I get the point that he isn't going into his prime is has been there. As he isn't dropping off from what matters and that is his passing game. So we can say he is still in his prime.

And now he has valuable experience and the knowledge that he has the ability to get to the final stage and win it all. He has proven that two out of three times.

Some of yinz get caught up with he isn't this or that, and don't see the clear picture.

from a size/arm strength/passing ability there is very few that I would want in place of him

because as far as toughness he is right up there

can he still get our Steelers to the big game and win it?

yes

has he showed any signs of that dropping off anytime soon?

no

that's really the only thing that matters in my eyes

We've gone through this **** over and over for the last four years and no one has EVER posted an alternative QB to Ben.

When it is suggested that Ben be traded the weasels back off from their tired old talking points.

Just complaints, never any solutions. Just regurgitated garbage, never a fresh alternative.

Guess what, this new contract was the best thing that ever happened to you.
You are now off the hook, Ben is signed...so you can sit back an complain, complain

Kirk Cousins. . . there I said it. I want Kirk Cousin backing Ben. Oh, replacement for Ben? Nick Foles is the only other name I'd maybe mention for this conversation and I still don't think I;d let him hold Ben's clipboard.

You can doom and glom until you croak for all I give a ****. You can stick your QB rating and all the other fantasy football statistical garbage up your whiny ***. He played great last season, he has at least a couple good years left in him barring injury. Not YOU, or anyone else, can predict such an injury to him, Rodgers, Brady, Manning, or any other professional player. He's the best QB we've had in over twenty years. He got paid the market value he earned. You want to wait for the inevitable decline in a couple years? Go ahead. Never once did I say he wasn't nearing that very decline. By all means, do what half the people here do and ***** about something that should be seen as a positive. It's been the prevailing mojo here for a couple years now. I'm done.

Where's Tebow, I want that guy! He's never going to get a rape charge...

I don't know what some want the Steelers to do? Leave Ben walk, tank a few seasons, give Landry Jones the keys to the O, etc.? Signing Ben to an extension is their best chance to win for the foreseeable future. When Life After Ben does come and it will, the new era of Steeler football will be in full effect. We have a better chance of seeing another Bubby Brister behind center than another Ben. That is the reality of it and is why I am trying to savor Ben's remaining years. We have no idea where we will go from here.

I am saying barring injury we will not see a decline in Ben in 4 to 5 years.

These forever evolving D rules have extended QB's careers............

Don't worry...I think Haley is drawing up some designed running plays to get Ben around 150 to 200 yards. Maybe even 300 yards. If that happens he will be at the TOP of his game. Lets get it done Haley!!! We need Ben at his best!!! Run him until those wheels fall off!!!

And by all means lets ONLY look at the very flawed QB rating at determining when he was in his prime... seriously?

2007 - 15 games, 404 attempts, 65.3%, 3,154 yards, 7.8 ypa, 32 TD, 11 INT, 104.1 rating
2014 - 16 games, 608 attempts, 67.1%, 4,952 yards, 8.1 ypa, 32 TD, 9 INT, 103.3 rating

Best statistical year was 2007 my ***.

Interesting that he scored the same number of points with 3154 yards as he did with 4952 yards and 204 fewer attempts

Not so much. Ben has started to take what the defense gives him. It translates into more shorter passes. In the end more attempts. Isn't this what everyone has been bitching that they wanted him to do for the last umpteen years?

I don't know if he is in his prime or not.. All I know is that he doesn't seem to have the magic he once did. There was a time when you could bank on him to win. Now?

I am not saying he isn't a good qb and he gives us our best chance to win, but last year as great as his numbers were. I remember hearing a lot of people saying " well Ben didn't have his best game today"
Jets, Bucs at home. Jacksonville, etc.

Beat at home by Joe Flacco in the playoffs??? Its been along time since I have seen the guy who had that super bowl winning drive. Long time since he won a playoff game.

I would rather he has 200 yds a game and they win. Then him throwing 50 times for 400 yds 5 touchdowns and don't make the playoffs.

He has maybe the best RB, and WR in the game right now. Improved line, & a better than average TE.

I would expect & hope to see some sort of playoff run this year. Great QB's don't go 5 yrs without sniffing a playoff win.

Nobody in their right mind believes that the "miracle" wins or 4th quarter comebacks of yesteryear were all about Ben. And nobody in their right mind should believe that the failure to achieve them lately are all about Ben. In the past he had a defense that could actually stop the other team from scoring, force a turnover or score on their own at an opportune time. That hasn't been the case lately.

while I agree on most of your points, what would be your plan with Ben or the QB position, in general? I don't see 2-time SB winning QB Eli Manning tearing it up lately. He has his moments, but have been rather mediocre. I like Eli and think he is a solid QB like Ben. We all want winning seasons, PO wins and trips to the SB. Staying on top in this league is hard to do. While the QB gets most of the credit when they lose and most blame when they lose. We have been riddled with injuries, poor drafts and position coaching changes, which tends to lead to PO draughts and PO disappointments. It's not excuses, but reality. Luckily, we have had a QB like Ben. CLE, BUF, MIN, DET, PHI and MIA have been searching for their Ben for years now. We are lucky fan base.

Yep...i wonder how many games we have lost over the last 4 or 5 seasons where we watched the opposing team march down the field in the closing minutes to score and take the lead in game. You can argue reasons on this but in the end early in Ben's career our defense didn't allow this. The last 4 or 5 not so much. At times this has made Ben press also. And we get the WTF moment from him that we have seen.

Interesting...

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/writer...ew-contract-sets-record-marks-for-quaterbacks

Here is how the deal ranks among the other biggest quarterback deals in the NFL, in major parameters:

Annual average (new money added to deal)
1. Aaron Rodgers: $22 million
2. Ben Roethlisberger: $21.9 million
3. Matt Ryan: $20.75 million
4. Joe Flacco: $20.1 million
5. Drew Brees: $20 million

Guarantee at signing
1. Roethlisberger: $60.75M
2. Brees: $60.5M
3. Ryan: $59M
4. Rodgers: $53M
5. Flacco: $51M

First 3 yrs. earnings
1. Roethlisberger: $65M
2. Ryan: $63M
3. Rodgers: $62.5M
4. Flacco: $62M
5. Brees: $61M

The deal will save the Steelers, who have been in a cap crunch, a little over $1M in cap space in 2015, but this deal is about much, much more than that. It secures one of the greatest players in the history of the storied franchise for the totality of his career, and allows the franchise to align its budgets and spending for years to come.

Just go win another super bowl and everyone(err most) will be happy! Of course two more super bowls would be optimal but one will do.
