Roethlisberger, Steelers Agree to New Contract

Ben's deal will be the biggest cap hit we have just like every franchise QB. This year it may go down a little but it will be much higher in each successive year. The 5th year might be 25 to 30 million hit, depending on how they structured it. I really don't expect much of a cap savings this year.

6 years and 130 million sounds like a deal that will bury the team. At 20 million a year I do not see how they will field a team around Ben. It sounds like the 80s all over again except we will have a franchise qb for part of it and then be unable to sign anyone to catch or run with the ball, let alone field a defense. Now if what I thought I saw earlier was correct the cap is 142 mill or something close, Pouncey is making 10 million and Ben 20 so in two players we have 30 million of a 140 million cap, not to mention the dead money hit we will see in the last 1 to 3 years of that contract if Ben gets hurt and can't play anymore.

That if true sounds like more horrible cap management if my other numbers are close. That would still mean we would have 51 more players to get under 110 million and some of those are not cheap, how many guys to we have being paid more than 2 million.

It's only a five year deal. They threw out the last year of the last contract (how do they account for the $6.8M left from the signing bonus and restructures? Anyone know?). So, I guess we have to wait for the actual numbers to see where it all falls out.

Ben with his style of play has taken alot more abuse than Brady or Manning..38 for him is 41 for Brady/Manning

Good news, anyone unhappy for paying around 22 millons a year for Ben I guess would prefer to invest that money like the eagles, jets, jaguars and dolphins.

yeah because the cap is going to stay at 143m every year until Ben retires. You haven't been paying attention recently have you? You can't have a franchise QB in this league and have him not take up a substantial part of the salary cap. Manning just restructured his deal to take 4m less, (base salary, dropped from 19m to 15m, but he can earn that 4m back by reaching the AFCCG and the SB), Brady took less as well dropping his base salary this year to 8m, but his cap hit is still 14m. Both waited until they were nearing 40 before taking less money. It's how the league works, look at how much Cutler, Dalton, Flacco, and Kaepernik make, and they aren't half the QB Ben is. The only one from that group to do anything is Flacco and then he went right back to regular Joe after that.

So Ben taking hits isn't as bad as Peyton having FIVE neck surgeries in one year? HA!

Although he deserves it hopefully he took the hometown discount he said he'd take to stay with the team. If he wants to keep winning (and stop running around like a chicken without it's head) we're going to need to keep some of these up and coming stars on offence around.

Ben's not Brady or Manning physically. I think he'll be fine playing until 38 or 39 with the realization that he cannot continue to take that kind of abuse as he ages. If I recall correctly Suggs or some linebacker said trying to bring down Ben is like trying to tackle a bear. I don't think any linebacker would say the same about Brady or Manning.

of course not, Brady doesn't get tackled, he folds like a chair before being touched. And when touched he becomes pudding

Actually, I have been paying attention the increases in the future are going to happen but may not be as big as from last year to next year. I do not want to see the team handicapped by a huge contract and possibly 3 years worth of dead money and no QB. We have to sign Ben and 52 other players and be under the cap. Would we have been better off with a 14 million a year contract.

yes of course, let's go sign Cam Newton or Sam Bradford instead of Ben

"Would we have been better off with 14 million"
What if he says nothing less than, lets say, 20 million? Or 18 million?

What do you do?
Lets hear some names of replacement QBs.

Told you guys before, no matter what this is gonna get spun that the mismanagement of the last few years is all Ben and this new contracts fault.

And its already happening.

14 million is middle of the road qb money and by the time this next season starts it won't even be top 15.

For 20 million I would expect at least one playoff win in 5 yrs.

Wonder when numbers come in.

I'd speculate 5/100-110 total.

Probably 20 to sign, guaranteed bases in 16/17. Cap hit for 2015 should drop by 6-7M. probably a 3 year deal in reality if he's not still elite cause there will be significant charges in the last 3 years.

I can't believe some are questioning his salary. He is a franchise QB, going into his prime. No PO wins in 4 years, but how is that all on him? He gives it his all every game. Maybe he is not always accurate like Brady, Manning or Rodgers, but he has heart and is a leader of this team. Proof of getting knocked out of the PO game and still coming back in, even when he shouldn't have. Whatever he and the Rooneys agreed to is supposed to be fair for both sides. Ben has the best interest of this team and wants to add more Lombardis in the case. He is capable of delivering, but the FO has to deliver, as well. This is a happy day for Steeler Nation. Can we just celebrate it for 24 hours before condemning it?

Letthe celebration begin. I'm glad we got this done. The consequinces are what they are. I just hope, like last year, he keeps healthy and productive. Our OL needs inprovement, but team D is much more important.

Salute the nation
