Steelers should have won this game easily. They pretty much spotted the Ravens 10 points. Why would they go willdcat backed up on their goal and have Samuels throw it? That was insane. The ravens pretty much run wildcat every single play with Jackson. You think their defense doesn't know how to defend it?

Johnnie Holton is useless. He does not play to his speed at all. He has bad acceleration and doesn't seem very agile. He's not good at special teams and the only way he's making a big play is if the DB falls down. He doesn't track the ball in the air and can't make a contested catch.

Bring back Moncrief. It's not like he killed somebody. They need a deep threat and Holton isn't it. Use Moncrief because at least he MIGHT make a play unlike Holton.

Tuitt needs to be signed to an extension because he's a beast.

This defense is finally showing signs of becoming great. Tuitt is a big part of that as is Nelson and Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick really may be the steadying force they needed to make this come together.

They need to do more from under center. Or at least from the Pistol. It is clear that Conner is a much better runner when he can take the handoff whiole he's on the move. These sidecar handoffs from a standstill reduce his effectiveness big time.

More plays from under center will open up a lot more play action options.

The Ravens may be screwed. If Jefferson misses significant time, that defense that is already struggling could fall apart. If they can't play with a lead or a close score then their offense falls apart.

The Bush INT was the correct call. It was the call on the field and there was not enough to overturn. By rule, the ball is allowed top touch the ground so long as the ball was controlled before and after contact. It was. Some say it wasn't controlled before it hit but that ball slammed into the ground hard. If Bush didn't have a grip on it, then it would have bounced right out of his hands. Instead, it stayed glued to his bicep. He must have had control before it hit. In any case, there was no clear evidence to overturn that. It was right to stay with the call on the field.

Kicking off in OT was absolutely the right call. Fatigue was not a factor. The defense still looked fresh even at the end of the 4th quarter. The risk of kicking is the offense scores a TD and you never touch the ball. I say that was a very small probability that the Ravens drive the ball 80 yards for a TD. Jackson was struggling and the steeler defense was all over him.

The biggest risk was getting the kickoff, going 3 and out with your 3rd string QB, Balt gets a short field and Tucker nails the game winner.

The best chance to win was to kick, get the stop then only have to make a short drive for a game winning FG. It was playing out exactly that way until the JuJu fumble.

Playing with House Money - let's face it, the season is probably done in terms of playoffs. This defense is really getting good so now is the time to take more chances on offense. By chances i mean letting Devlin and Rudolph attack the defense, not a bunch of gadget plays.

By the end of the season, you need to know if Rudolph is your potential Ben replacement.

Having said that, i still think the steelers can win this division. I don't think the ravens are very good and the Browns will be erratic. 9 wins could take this division and that could happen if Rudolph/Devlin play at a decent level. Steelers could be able to grind out wins on defense.

I had a strange premonition. Mike Tomlin gets this team to 8 or 9 wins and is named coach of the year for winning with backup QBs

Sound crazy? Look at the schedule and show me the great team that they can't beat. Rams defense appears to have fallen apart so that's win-able. 10 points could be enough to beat the Bills and Jets. The Chargers have a ton of injuries.

It's all on the QBs now. If they can beat the Chargers, this season still has a pulse.

A few thoughts on rules.

Hurdling should be illegal. There's a reason why so many guys are doing it. It's because the defense is not allowed to go high at all. If the runner leaps, the defender will get penalized if he jumps to meet him in the air. As a result defenders MUST go low. Runners know this so they are leaping over guys and it's an unfair advantage. Plus it's really dangerous.

It should be a penalty to either fake a slide or fake toward the sideline like you are going out of bounds. Again, defenders MUST gear down and allow guys to slide or run out of bounds. Runners should not be allowed to fake either of those moves.

LOL, this team is not winning 8 of the last 11, Hell we have lost 8 of the last 11. We have a bad defense that could not stop the passes over the middle today from an erratic young QB and were iytgained 299-261. Every good QB has eaten this team alive, and done it easily..

Offensively we have no weapons that scare anybody and our WRs struggle to create space and our RBS are pedestrian at best. Couple that with our inept coaching and we win 6 games at the mist and wasted a top 10 pick on a safety who will never be a Troy or an Ed Reed which is the standard for a safety drafted in the top 10.

If they can beat the Chargers? They won't - and they won't beat the Colts, Bills, Ravens, Rams, Cardinals, and will likely split with the Browns. That puts them at 5 - 11 if they beat the rest and Tomlin led teams always lose a game they were expected to win so that will make up for a game they win against one of the above. I figure Dolphins, Jets, Browns (once), and Bengals are likely the only wins left on the schedule. This season is a time to find out what we have in new blood and who might replace Ben.

It's a longshot but if they can beat the chargers, it is possible.

Look at the schedule. For argument, let's say they beat the chargers, that's 2-5. Chargers just lost to Denver so they aren't unbeatable

Let's see if there are 6 or 7 more wins

Dolphins, Colts, Rams, @ Browns, @ Bengals, Browns, @ Cardinals, Bills, @ Jets, @ Ravens

Probably or at least very winnable
Dolphins, Browns, Cardinals, Bills, Jets, Ravens

That's 6 right there
Rams have had struggles, that's a possible win.
Colts would be a tough game. Their defense is playing great but that offense struggles.
Browns - I think the steelers have a good shot to split with them.

It's not an impossible schedule. I'm just saying it's possible if this defense continues to improve and it could improve as Bush and Fitzpatrick get more involved. This defense could possibly be dominant by the end of the year and that alone could get them to 8-8

As i said, i think there's a lot riding on this Chargers game. Win that game, then a Bye week and this team could re-group and put together some wins vs a mediocre schedule.

Let's not forget that even with all the struggles, the Steelers could easily be 3-2 right now as they probably should have won vs Seattle and Balt

Who are the Chargers? They're 2-3 and got their *** beat by 0-4 Denver today. That's a Denver defense without Bradley Chubb so the pass rush was not as good.

Denver ran for 191 yards vs Chargers today.

Let's not act like other team's **** don't stink too.

if the defense keeps taking the ball away and the offense can find a way to move the ball, they can win some games....

That's all i'm saying. This defense is really starting to play great.

look at how the Bills are grinding out wins with little output from the offense.

While true, Baltimore had the 29th ranked run D and we managed 77 yards rushing, and good QB'S have ripped us up this season.

Rivers, Goff, Mayfield x2, Brissett is playing well.
If we can't run on **** defenses, what are we going to do vs good defenses?

and name all the good qbs on the teams left on the Steelers schedule....

Lamar Jackson was considered a good QB by the “experts”. He didn’t look too good today IMO. Next week will definitely be a test to see just how good this defense has become.

To go from Jackson to Rivers has it’s upside and downside. Rivers will get the ball out quicker no doubt but he is a statue and a lot of sacks might be coming his way.

Ok so I just watched a video on fox sports of dean blandino explaining why ET3 didnt get ejected. He stated that there was a flag thrown on the field, saying that MR DID get the defenseless player flag but NY must've decided the hit was not enough to warrant ejection.

Am I missing something? I was bitching about a flag the entire time. Was I so worked up that I missed it?

steelers ran effectively vs Balt. They just didn't do it in volume. Chubb had an 88 yards run vs Balt. If you remove that single play, he was 19 for 77 yards. Today Conner was 14 for 55 which is a close in yards per carry.

Rivers is streaky. Steelers nearly beat them with last year's swiss cheese defense that covered Keenan Allen with LBs.
Goff is kind of all or nothing.
Mayfield still makes plenty of mistakes and their OL is awful. Steelers pass rush could win that game.
Brissett is OK but the Colts are a run first team. That could be a low scoring grinder.

I'm not thinking the steelers are awesome all of a sudden but we can't let all these bad losses completely cloud the fact that this team has gotten much better and has played well enough to win.

If they focus more on running the ball and playing defense, they really do have a shot to win a bunch of games. The QB situation makes that a huge question mark obviously but this team does have positives.

Dionte Johnson is improving and looks like a playmaker. The OL has played better, Adding Vannett means they can use 2 TE sets. Jay Sam is developing as a playmaker.

This year may go down the tubes but it could also set up a big year in 2020 with a bunch of young guys getting experience.

It did get flagged. They only mentioned it once on the broadcast. Here's the play by play

  • [h=3]3rd & 11 at PIT 12[/h](7:39 - 3rd) (Shotgun) M.Rudolph pass short middle to J.Washington to PIT 38 for 26 yards (M.Judon) [E.Thomas]. PIT-M.Rudolph was injured during the play. PENALTY on BLT-E.Thomas, Roughing the Passer, 15 yards, enforced at PIT 38.

Season is 90 to 95% over. Now, let's see what you got. Who wants to play and be here next year? Can Tomlin keep the team together and fighting to win? If not, he should be fired. The D has shown improvement so hopefully that continues. Holton sucks other than as a gunner on ST's. Get rid of him on O and try Moncreif. If they did Moncreif right, he wasn't catching any passes the past 2 weeks to rest his fingers. But, my guess is they had him double up on his jugs work so he can "catch better" with his Limas Sweed mangled digits. The only good thing to look forward to is we should get a pretty good 2nd round pick next year unless we traded that away too.

Doesn't matter how good or how bad the Chargers are. All that matters is that they are on the west coast. Steelers losing on the west coast is automatic. Tomlin has won one game in his career on the west coast. Lost at Seattle, they will lose in L.A., Arizona is almost west coast so pencil that in as a loss too.

******* A!

Nice post, Tape. The fact we're sitting at 1-4 and still have reason for optimism is actually pretty good news. The defense is getting increasingly better, becoming more consistent, players seem to be settling into their roles. Having VWill back out there is a positive, hopefully it's a permament move sending Barron to the bench. The secondary is about as good as I remember it being in a long time. Love him or hate him, Tomlin has kept this team together and playing hard, even after losing Ben and now Rudolph. If there ever was a time to circle the wagons, this is it. Having a guy like Duck leading the charge, who's fearless and has a gun-slinger mentality, may work out better than expected next few games.

I agree! They will not win 8 of their next 11 games. Maybe 4 or even 5 of the next 11, but no more. And Tomlin has the get out of jail free card too.
I was guessing 10-6 before Ben went on IR. Without Ben I figured 8-8. Now I don't think we'll even hit that.

The only gripe I have with the coaching is using the wildcat. No way Baltimore is falling for that, so don't bother. In past seasons, with the killer B's, we squandered a powerhouse offense with an inept defense. Now, it feels like the opposite. It's gonna suck losing Hargrave in the off-season. Dupree is playing well. Not multi-year, high priced contract good, but he's been a TFL machine. Credit there where it's due. The D as a whole has been lights out though, so maybe that's just making things easier for him. I hope JuJu has to carry a football around everywhere he goes all week. Glad to hear Mason's prognosis is positive. That was truly horrifying to watch. When he was falling, his eyes were rolled back in his head and he looked dead. At this point, playoffs are a far cry, but screwing the Dolphins on their rd1 position and just seeing where this Duck experience takes us should be interesting.
