By: John Walker SteelerNation.com   The Pittsburgh Steelers have a rich history of defensive excellence. The words “Steelers” and “Defense” are practically synonymous with one another in the football world. Tough. Nasty. Dominant. Vaunted. Hard-Nosed. Those are the kinds of players that fit the mold of a black and gold defender. While most people immediately […]

Rod Woodson. The best. Good write-up, John.

Was too young to see Mel Blount at all and didn't pay enough attention at the time to really watch Rod Woodson in his glory days, but here's what I'm typically told (and also what I've read and have seen in past highlights). Rod Woodson was thought to be one of the best pure athletes to play the CB position, not just for the Steelers, but the entire NFL. To be third on the list in total interceptions with 71, 1st in INT returns for touchdowns and 1st in fumble recoveries for a defensive player is just remarkable.

But. He only played 10 of his 17 years with the Steelers, played in a much more pass-happy league than Blount, and also played 3 more seasons than Blount did. And Blount had 57 career INTs while not getting thrown the ball to his side of the field very often out of fear he'd knock the ******* wide receiver out upon catching it. They made a rule change because of Mel Blount. He was also a physical specimen who could play the run, and run like a damn gazelle.

So in the end for me, it's Blount #1, Rod #2. I don't think that's a knock on Woodson or a controversial call, but again, I'm going on what I didn't even see with my own eyes, live. Reading that last sentence, that sure would give someone confidence in my stance after reading this whole little write-up, lol.

Did you forget you already picked him. Think saying it twice will ..will it so? Love me some Rod but he was a ***** towards the end and flew the coup to the rats, niners, and faiders. For how great he was he didn't have rules changed like Blount did. Blount physically dominated opposing players. I think it was his first year starting that he actually held a WR without a TD. Rod himself will tell you Blount was the Steelers best corner. For how well Rod intercepted footballs,Mel still had a higher single season 11 he snagged in comparison to Rods single season high 8. Rod was a HOF player but Mel Blount was all that and a bag of chips. We are somewhat comparing apples to oranges as far as accolades as Rod had good and plenty. But Mel gets the edge when you factor physical play in.

Thats all well and good. Mel was great. But for me, personally, I prefer Rod Woodson. So does the writer.

I watched them both play and hands down for me, Mel Blount was the better CB. People who didn't grow up during the Steel Curtain days and can only watch a few YouTube highlights don't really understand how nasty those defenses were. No one was afraid of Rod Woodson, in fact, QB's knew how aggressive Rod would undercut routes and he got burned with double moves. The worst was the ******* fog bowl with NE. Bledsoe torched his *** in that game. sorry, I'm still salty about that one. Blount was huge even at today's standards, fast, and loved to knock people stupid. My kind of Steeler

The people who do not want Mel Blount as #1, probably never saw him play, week in and week out. He dominated like no other. Plus, Mel was never a RAVEN.

There. So F U Omar.

hey. hey now, no need to get salty. i admit, mel was before my time, and all i have to go off of is highlights. but, i don't care. a big part of the reason i fell in love with this franchise was watching rod patrol the back end at the very beginning of his career in the late 80's. so maybe it's selective memory on my part, but, whatever, how i feel about a highly subjective matter is how i feel about it. no harm, no foul.

Yeah, I'd put Mel #1 and this is from a guy that has a Woodson #26 jersey.

Got some great players on the top of that list but the lack of quality depth shows how meager the pickings have been for the Steelers at the position. IMO, though he has a limited body of work with the team, Nelson is better than several of those guys and will eventually surpass them.

Good list here. Impressive you have two shutdown corners at the top of the list and put me in with the crowd that Haden needs to be higher.

Consensus here is strong, Woodson can't be #1 over Blount. Haden should climb up that list a little more but Father Time is going to prevent him from getting too far up there.

Yeah...Joe should be a notch or 2 higher and (praying) Steve Johnson knocks Scott off the bottom rung.

Oh, and uh...pencil me in favor of Mel ******* Blount over Hot Rod.

Many of you know that #26 Rod Woodson is my favourite Steeler all time........with a plethora of great talent that follows him.

Here are some words from Rod himself regarding CBs .......... one of the many reasons I hold Rod as a special and humble talent

“Mel Blount, to me, is the best corner to ever play in the National Football League,” said Woodson, now an assistant coach with the Oakland Raiders. “If you ever met Mel, first of all, he’s a huge corner. He’s 6-4-ish. He wears these huge cowboy boots, this 10-gallon hat (and) this huge belt buckle. But he’s just so long and so fast and so fluid as an athlete.

My personal opinion Mel 1A+ Rod 1A

All I know is they both looked great in Black and Gold

The list outside the the #10 spot is decent. Chad Scott? No thank you the guy was burned too often. I'll take D.J. Johnson for spot#10.
