Ranking the 10 Best Cornerbacks in Steelers History

My very first attendance of a Steelers game after being a fanatic for 31 years was at KC 2003. The very first play from scrimmage was Chad picking off Trent Green for a pic six. I guess it was imprinted on memory because I always liked him despite his issues.

I grew up watching Mel Blount play. My favorite Defensive player from the Greatest D Of All Time. I used to yell at the QB’s to throw at his side as a kid. It pissed me off they rarely listened. The guy was a beast. Plus he had a cool personality. What a treat to watch all those guys play.

Yes,I know different position. Even though he was a SS,Kam Chancellor reminded me a lot of Mel Blount. And no disrespect to Rod. He would be first on any other team but the Steelers. We were lucky to have had both.

Consensus here is strong, Woodson can't be #1 over Blount. Haden should climb up that list a little more but Father Time is going to prevent him from getting too far up there.

I've watched a fair amount of film from the 1970's. The Steelers defense was so good back then. The DB's were allowed to grab and assault WR's. On film I see Blount getting beat a little too often. He's not as good as coverage as Rod was. Sorry, the film doesn't lie and Rod's era had better QB's with the tougher rule set to cover WR's.

Both were great, Rod is greater. Rod is the best DB ever in the history of the game. Yeah he was a Raven. Rooney would not give him a long term contract so he left in free agency. NEVER let a player at a key position going to the hall of fame go in his prime go.

Mel gets it for being a Steeler his entire career. Woodson did hit the league more ready to play than Blount did though. I still remember that game against Miami in Blount's second season. Steelers jumped out to a 21-3 lead, then Paul Warfield proceeded to treat Blount like he was Artie Burns. Warfield repeatedly burnt Blount to a crisp, to the point that Noll had to pull him. Can't say he didn't learn though, as nothing like this ever happened again.

Rod got beat at times too. All great corners do. A fair amount of film huh for you that is a ten second highlight film.[emoji23] What a maroon.

Woodson was beaten often by the stop and go route . He was always abused by Michael irvin when they played the Brokeback Boys. Blount was never owned by anyone huge advantage Blount.

flip #1 and #2

Woodson was a better CB than Blount IMO—in fact I’ll go so far as to saying only better player in team history was Joe Greene.

That being said, he’s lower on over list and definitely behind Mel Blount on CB list because he wasn’t a Steeler his whole career.

Dan Rooney indicated letting Woodson go was 1 of 3 regrets.

what was the other two?

They have been pretty shity at that position if Chad Scott and Willie Gay make that list. I mean I like Willie don't get me wrong but an all time list. How can you barely be a base defender and be on an all time list.

You know, talking about Steeler cornerbacks, makes me think back to 1993. The Steelers used their first round pick, #23 on the forgettable Deon Figures. Why I brought that up is that that was the year KC sent pick # 18 to the 49ers for Joe Montana. KC also received a player, and a third round pick in the deal. The Steelers likely could have gotten Montana for the #23 pick straight up. You know, folks always had the dream of the local boy Marino coming home, but that was never going to happen. This was actually possible. I recently rewatched the awful 1994 AFC Championship Game. Neil was dreadful. You realize how dreadful he was in that game after 16 years of watching a real qb in Ben. There is no way we lose that game if Montana is behind center. He likely doesn't retire after 1994 coming off of a Super Bowl season, even if we lost to the 49ers. I doubt very much if he'd have been passing to Larry Brown in the Super Bowl. I loved Cowher, but man was he stubborn. Once he made a decision on a player, it was set in stone, which is what got us O'Donnell, and then Kordell. People always give Bill a pass for a lack of qb play before Ben, but damn, isn't it part of his along with the gm's responsibility to get the right players, especially at such an important position? They didn't really make much of an effort before Dan Rooney made them pick Ben. Makes me worry that they may be doing it again, relying on scrubs at the qb position.
