Quarterback in round three?

Why wait? It's a need now and in the future. This is a 10-6- to 12-4 type of team meaning top QB's will be gone before we pick next year

This year, there are some talents that won't go in rounds 1-2, but they need a lot of work. With two 3rd round picks a pick on one of these type of talents makes sense.

Why wait? Because if we fill needs at OLB and DB correctly, we can draft a QB at the back end of round 1 or 2 next year instead of round 3 this year. You should get a better quality QB by drafting in the first round. Beyond our need at DB/OLB we should have a need at ILB next year depending on what happens with Timmons. Next year would be a great year to get a QB higher than normal.

The talent at that position is weak this year. What would be left by the time we pick in the 3rd round? I seriously doubt it would be any better than Jones, and with less experience.

The guy I'd keep my eye on for the future is that Eason kid at Georgia. He is only going to be a sophomore this year.

Based on what assesment draws you to the conclusion that the talent is weak this year?

I'm pretty sure the Seahawks and Cowboys had needs to fill when they took QBs in rounds 3 and 4, but I'm also sure they are extremely happy they drafted those QBs

I don't think we will get a starter type this year, but wouldn't mind getting a career back-up type with our #4 or #5
and let Landry go. Actually if we draft well this year, our #1 could be used next year on a QB.

The Steelers will draft a QB in the 3rd round and this board will scream outrage - wasted pick in the name of Bruce Davis.

The same assessment that others say this is the year we should grab a QB, my opinion.

Of course it's your opinion, everything on this site is basically an opinion. The question was what is it that informs that opinion, what assessment has lead to the conclusion of your opinion? I was simply trying to gauge whether or not you were making a blanket statement that has been repeated by national sports media, or whether you personally investigated the talent yourself. Anyone can make assertions or opinions, I was simply looking for the reasoning behind it.

with Ben threatening retirement and Jones hitting the free agent market. Andddddddd having a extra third. I would think the majority of fans could live with a 3rd round investment.

Since you've already criticized me, I'm sure you're going to criticize this article too.

I didn't realize asking someone to provide reasoning or support for their opinion was considered criticism, but that article talks about not reaching for one of these QBs in the 1st. I never suggested trading up in the first to "reach" for one of them, and he said exactly what I already stated in that they aren't ready to start immediately, I absolutely know this. The fact is this doesn't mean there isn't incredible talent and potential in this class worth drafting, and guess what, the Steelers do not need a QB who can start right away. In fact the best thing they could do is wait for a talented QB to fall where he'll have the chance to sit and learn for a few years. No where in that article does it affirm the idea this is not the year for the Steelers to choose a QB, I think it shows the opposite. As long as it is done at the right spot in the draft.

Those are exceptions, not the norm. QBs are the ultimate crap shoot in the draft

His last sentence of the second paragraph tells me all I need to know. I just hope we're not one of those teams. Once the few top tier QB's are taken, I don't feel (and neither does he), that any of the rest are worth drafting above the 4th round. Why waste the pick? We have more pressing needs right now.

Matt Flynn and a always injured Romo really not the same comparison ..I'm not saying we shouldn't draft a QB if things fall that way but the Sehags and Cowpuke situation was much different then where we are at.

But see this was my point, your whole opinion is based on someone else's opinion. That was the original purpose of my asking why you came to the conclusion you did. Thank you for finally getting to the original purpose of my question.

Well I am willing to bet they had zero intentions on these guys being starters, they took guys hoping for what they would become. With Ben talking retirement already, I do not understand the mentality of waiting rather than being prepared for Ben to leave, I think within the first four rounds there are QBs worth taking that can become what their potential shows they can be, and unless you are ready to return to the Kordell Stewart, Kent Graham, and etc. days then I think it's best to start looking for a replacement now who will be ready when Ben does retire.

Just wait till the 6th and draft a Brady type QB

My opinion was my opinion. I stated it before I found this article. It didn't take me long to find an article that concurred with my thinking.

So are you saying your not supposed to draft one then? Because even QBs from the first round that are elite are in the minority to tons of busts. So what's your point? Of course it's a crap shoot, in fact no player is usually a guarantee success, that doesn't mean you stop drafting players altogether.

It's like we've circled around to the beginning again. Did you come to this opinion based on your own personal evaluation of the class, or is it based on what others have said about the class?

I'm saying we did very well last year with our first 3 picks. We need to do the same this year and hope those 3 (+1) picks are players that we can play immediately. I believe we have another year before we need to worry about drafting a QB. Ben used the word retirement, its gonna raise some eyebrows. It also came after a demoralizing end to the season where his practice squad WRs **** the bed (minus AB). He was frustrated. I think Ben can play 3 more seasons at an elite level and I wouldn't expect much more than that. For me, I focus on fixing the holes that are on the roster right now and then work on a replacement for Ben next offseason.

If you don't end with such a frustrating way, maybe that retirement talk gets delayed.
