Pouncey needs surgery

Look at what a huge help to the run game Alan Faneca was as was Dawson. Replacing any quality lineman is a big task. We do not need to relive the debacle that was sean mahen. I think Pouncey is a bit over rated but he is still good to very good and there will likely be a drop off in quality. Hopefully Wallace can be adequate to good and we will be ok till Pouncey returns.

But remember, Mahan was not a center, he was a converted guard trying to play lighter to gain some agility and speed. it didnt work at all... Im saying that an average NFL center can make 95% of the blocks that a star center like pouncey can make.... the ones they cannot... the special ones that can chip a guy, get five to ten yards downfield ahead of the back and make another great block, that comes into play maybe a half dozen times in an entire game, and for the most part the back is already down or doesnt make the cut that the block opens up. The times that kind of athletic block actually gets used is miniscule... is it great when it does get utilized, absolutely, but its a luxury, not a nessesity. As long as Wallace doesnt let pressure up the middle and can make a good first block in the run game, we wont be screwed here.

I agree. It is a big loos that cannot be minimized, but positional importance is far less than other areas. It would be great if he could come back for the stretch, but I think the Dirty Doctor can get the job done.

Exactly what I have been saying.

Yeah they're so frugal that they pay Lawrence timmons 9 mill a year. Sorry that's not frugal let's not forget worilds and his franchise tag. They have made a bunch of stupid money decisions recently

Today's paper says Cody Wallace is the man.

Hack reporters

“I texted him at halftime and I was like, ‘Dude, it’s like somebody died in here,’ ” guard Ramon Foster said of the reaction in the locker room after the players learned of the severity of Pouncey’s injury. “That’s how close he is to me and to everyone else. You hate to see that. It got quiet. Everybody, when they heard whispers of it, everybody instantly dropped their heads. It’s tough.”

“It’s like when we lost Dermontti Dawson . It’s not good,” former Steelers Pro Bowl offensive tackle Tunch Ilkin said Sunday on his way out of Heinz Field.

“It’s like when we lost Mike Webster. It’s not good".

“I’m not saying this team can’t overcome it. The offensive line is better now than it was two years ago. But it’s a significant loss. Don’t think that it’s not.”

So because you don't like Timmons he doesn't deserve to be paid what he is worth. If the Steelers think highly of him they have to pay him his market value. Everybody complains of stupid contracts.. which ones are you referring too. Which ones are handicapping this team. Nobody predicted Woodley's freefall. Nobody

Maurkice Pouncey will undergo surgery today or tomorrow team source says. Exact timetable unknown for recovery but not likely season-ending

Hopefully the worst case scenario is for Pouncey to miss the first 10 games and return on Nov 29 at the Seahawks which is right after the bye week.

We should be looking to bring in a starter

here's one

Samson Satele expected to visit Seahawks Monday

Adam Caplan of ESPN.com reports that the team is expected to visit with center Samson Satele on Monday. Satele started all 16 games for the Dolphins last year, but the team didn’t move to re-sign him with Mike Pouncey moving back to center this year after playing guard in 2014.

Seahawks traded Max Unger as part of the Jimmy Graham and they are always in good cap position. Apparently their replacements for Unger have not panned out. This guy ain't leaving their camp unless he is below a starter in which case why would you want him.

This morning on Sirius they were saying up to 8 weeks out.
I think that would be really good news.

That would be phenomenal if it is calendar weeks that is fine. That is only 6 or 7 games. But lets be more realistic and say 10-11. He will still be back for the playoff push. If they aren't in it they wouldn't be if he was there anyways.

I was being sarcastic. I have been saying the exact opposite.

Good thing they added that 8 week or whatever IR list.

I don't know why they don't have more slots for that, just make it so that you have to get league permission to put a guy on it so they have to consent to a league examination or something. they waste money paying guys on the IR who could play late in the season

Because Belicheat would put 20 guys on it then halfway through the season cut 20 and have a fresh team for the second half and the playoffs. Remember, Br*dy has been listed as "questionable" every week for 14 years.

It is an 8 week injury. The surgery is most likely pins to help the fibula repair quicker. It's an 8 week mend and 2 weeks to get back up to speed. He should be ready game 9.

As far as you armchair GMs think losing an all pro center is no big problem. You're wrong. Center is the ONLY skill position on the offensive line. They touch the ball EVERY play. There has been no problems with the center exchanges between Pouncey and Ben. Last year Pouncey was healthy and the offense was top 3 in the league. I'm glad none of you work for the Steelers, because they understand how incredibly valuable and pivotal it is to have your most skilled lineman at center. Webster, Dirt, Hartings, Pouncey. There's a reason why our offense functions at a high level. And it starts at the snap!

why not convert Cam Thomas? Dude is awesome at preventing the defense from getting to the QB and opens up huge running lanes all by himself.

There is no comparison between a tackle and a centre. The tackle is left in space with one of the most athletic players on the field. That player can throw a multitude of pass rush moves at him, using speed or strength. And if you over react to one he kills you with the other. In comparison, the centre usually takes on a big guy who has little to no moves or speed. Plus on a good portion of his blocks he is simply double teaming the nose or the DT on the playside of a run. I don't want to lose Pouncey, but this is a game where players are lost. there are much more critical positions.

Etuini Haloti Ngata and others like him disagree with your statement.

Past history has proven we can 'get by' without too much drop off when Pouncey was down. Whether it was Velasco (a journeyman) or Wallace (another journeyman), we didn't lose much.

Right now, we don't need anything better than Wallace BUT if he goes down, we better have someone better than Hubbard (who looks awful).

I would hope to sign a "known" vet player like Ted Larsen or Lamar Mady for cheap after the cuts to be a short term emergency back-up for the interior. Pouncey could be back practicing in as soon as 6 weeks as the fibula is not a load bearing bone. He could be back in game shape in 9 weeks which puts him back before midseason.

Really. And a centre gets paid what compared to a LT? I love how some of you pick one name out of a 32 team league as a point. And actually Ngata is exactly what I'm talking about. He is big, huge and strong. I seriously doubt that someone like Pouncey blocks him any better than Cody Wallace does. Pouncey's skill set is about getting to the second level. Should I provide a list of players on the outside who are difficult to block? C'mon.

Also don't forget Pouncey sets the line

Pouncey has the rare ability to dissect defenses quickly and get the offensive line in the proper pass protection or proper alignment on running plays.

“Pouncey can see things when his hand is on the ball,” Munchak said. “His vision is very good. His decision-making is very sound and very quick. When a center can make a decision that fast and get the boys all aligned that helps everyone relax and lets those guys do their jobs better.

“That’s the stuff that doesn’t get talked about much. I’ve been around a lot of good centers who have the physical makeup but who aren’t as sharp as he is mentally. He sees what defenses are trying to do, and he’s able to get us in the right thing. That helps all of us a lot.”

Rob Rossi of the Trib was on local radio y'day. He was saying that Pouncey might be #2 player on offense (behind Ben) that we just couldn't afford to lose. I think that Rossi sucks in general, but I also truly disagree with him on this issue. If we have to play 10 games without one guy on offense, my ranking of guys that would be the biggest loss is something like Ben, Bell, AB, Beachum and then probably Pouncey, although at that point it's start to become a bit of a close call...

I was picking this team at 9-7 BEFORE this injury.

I don't want to hear excuses on why we didn't make the playoffs on injuries already. I don't think this team is very well built.
