SteelCityInsiders article...here are excerpts
http://pit.scout.com/story/1536060-steelers-great-troy-polamalu-retires?s=68
Troy Polamalu retired Thursday night and gave his only interview to Scout.com's Jim Wexell.
...
Troy Polamalu called Dan Rooney on Thursday night to inform him he was retiring from football.
...
"Maybe it was a sign for me to retire when I chase my kids around and couldn't catch them," Polamalu said with a laugh. "It was either a sign for me to retire or a sign for them to begin training."
...
"It's our Holy Week this week. Our Easter is on Sunday," he said. "I've been in church and had a lot of time to contemplate. It actually hit me today in church that, 'Man, you know what? You're done. You're done. Your training is done. Your getting in your stance in football is done.' It actually hit me in the middle of church. I was like, all right, man, it's time to start living. Because I've been living the dream."

To be fair, this was an exclusive interview with Jim Wexell that everyone is jumping on. Great job by him to get the story.

Although I expected it, this news feels like a punch to the gut. Not seeing 43 with his mane over the "Polamalu" nameplate is tough to think about. He was truly a special player and one that brought us many great moments and memories while always conducting himself with the utmost class. I wish him nothing but the best in retirement and look forward to his Hall of Fame enshrinement in Canton.

Best wishes to you Troy. Thank you for all the memories. See you in Canton.

Thanks for the memories Troy, I'm sure your football days are only the beginning of the greatness you are set to accomplish.

CBS sports is reporting it as well. Its been a great run Troy. You've been a great Steeler and consummate professional. We all love you and wish you and your family the best.

If a Mod wants to edit the thread title or OP please go ahead (or delete the thread and start another), I can't edit the title and won't be able to keep the OP updated anyway.

Thanks for all Troy!!!

What an awesome player, and a better man!

Troy finishes his career as my 4th all time favorite. (Hines, Lambert, Woody) I had the pleasure of seeing him play 4 times and will continue to rock the #43 jersey often!

All the best in the future Troy.. You were an amazing player to watch!!

Anyone else notice that Troy called Dan Rooney (not Art II or Tomlin)

wow knew it was coming but still hits hard

Troy has been my son's favorite Steeler and one of my all time favorites also. He will be missed.

Man, time flies.. I remember his rookie season running over Carson Palmer and thinking to myself, "I'm watching a HOFer." It's an end of an era, he was a great great football player and seems to be a greater person. I wish him the best and I thank him for all the memories and retiring in Black and Gold!

Steeler Nation Salutes you, Troy.

like I said on FB: one of the all-time greats and it was a sincere pleasure watching his play every Sunday. Thanks for being a role-model in an era where being a role-model is shunned.

Man, it's time but I will miss him greatly. One of my all time favorite Steelers. Much love, appreciation, and respect to Mr. Polamalu. Thank you for some incredible memories!

Wow...knew it was probably coming but still does not make it easy. Troy is an all-time Steelers and NFL great...so many amazing memories watching him fly all over the field. As a tribute, I ask all that have the ability to change their avatar here on SN to switch it to a picture of Troy. Wishing you all the very best 43!!!

Makes me want to tear up a bit. ;_;

Not afraid to say that I think he's in the conversation for greatest of all time.

I was just talking to my son, who made a pretty good point. You could reasonably make the case that Troy is the only member of those great defenses who will make the HOF. That's amazing.

A legend, he will be missed greatly.

Thanks for everything Troy, it was an honor to see you wear the Black and Gold for 12 glorious seasons. May all Steeler fans in the present day remember your name always, and tell your story to that next generation of fans. Godspeed and Godbless.

To one of the Greatest Of All Time-Thanks for the awesome memories, Troy. Respect...

I for one wish Troy & his family nothing but the best! The guy was a class act on and off the field. A true Steeler! We will see his jersey retired one day in the future! I can't believe we watched him for 12 seasons....and now it's over. It seems like just yesterday I remember him as a rookie trying to defend a pass that literally went right thru his arms to Broncos WR Rod Smith in the back right corner of the endzone for a TD and a lot of people on here were declaring the kid a BUST in game chat because he didn't catch the damn ball! But I remember on that play thinking to myself he did everything right but didn't catch or knock down the pass....maybe he'll get better! Heh well he got pretty good, in fact so good he's gonna have a bust of his own in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in five years....BANK ON IT! Brings a tear to my eye and a lump to my throat almost the same way when Franco left the Burgh when I was a young kid.

Seeing how the HoF is anti-Steeler your probably right but you could make a case for Aaron Smith & Casey Hampton both belonging in the HoF. I don't think there is a 3-4 DL in the HoF is there? They certainly never get the credit they deserve DL in a 3-4 Defense. In a 3-4 Defense though a DL is almost cannon fodder when it comes to getting any respect for a job well done let alone be in the Hall of Fame...but both Aaron Smith & Casey Hampton a case could be made for both those guys.
