Pirates 2025

What happened to Bednar, a hometown kid, 100th save in his hometown park, traded for absolutely nothing...is the cherry on top of this giant **** sandwich of an organization. It's so bad, that DK is no longer going to report on them. That's right, He's had enough of investing his time and money to follow this cluster ****. The only way we get nutting out of ownership is to stop going to games. Make the place absolutely silent.

Too many guys in A ball. No immediate help. Traded players with control and kept guys on expiring contracts. They have the best pitcher in baseball who can make things happen in the postseason and they aren't even going to try to win while he's here.

I mean what do you do when your whole fanbase is screaming at you to spend more money? Cut payroll then pass it off as making room to spend on offebse in the offseason

If you like pnc park so much, spend your money on a VR program that imitates PNC only with a mlb team in it... not a fake live team thats a national punchline

Success to nutting is profit, not winning a world series. Like you said, we're wasting a generational talent. They were just two good hitters away from making a legit run with this bull pen. So sure, lets get rid of Furguson, Falter and Bednar and make the team that much worse.

Last night, the Pirates scored 16 runs. They sprinted out to a 9-0 lead in the first and somehow managed to lose 17-16. Against the worst team in baseball. Im not even sure what to say about them anymore.

Last I saw it was 15 - 10 I believe. Told my son it wouldn't surprise me if they ended up losing.

Day after Bednar is gone...complete collapse...they have no closer.

I went to bed it was 12-6. I was stunned but not surprised to see they lost. Wow.

This team is an embarrassment. Lost to the worst team in baseball. Gave up 17 freakin' runs to same worst team in baseball. Losing to Colorado a 2nd time. Damn.

They're simply an "AAAA" team whose current purpose to "develop" talent that has substantial MLB experience.

I've been a fan of the team since 79 and was really into the team in the late 80s early 90's. After Leyland's departure it's been pretty much downhill ever since except for a couple blips. So I'm really sorry to say it, but I'd expect them to be sold to another market before they become an actual competitive team in Pittsburgh. The Savannah/Jacksonville Pirates?

I wonder if Pittsburgh would prefer a quality AAA team or a perineal laughing stock of a MLB team?

Didn’t Bednar have another year of arbitration? If so, that makes trading him even more foolish.
Trading him is fine as long as you get a proper return for him with a year more of control. The Pirates didn't unfortunately.

The team is going to continue to suffer until they pay a premium player what he is worth to upgrade the offense. Agreed. However, the 2026 pitching staff is going to be F-I-L-T-H-Y.

Skenes
Ashcraft
Chandler
Keller
Oviedo
Jared Jones (ready by June or July)
Barco

Mlodzinski
Mattson
Santana
Moreta
Nicolas
Lawrence

Since the All-Star break, the team has schooled the Tigers, Giants, Blue Jays, and Red Sox. They are not going to do it, but one big hitter in a key position - like Bichette at SS - and the team would be a playoff contender next season.

Watching my first Pirates game this year tonight. It's a free MLB network game.

Great night to stumble over it. Bob and Greg are talking with Lanny Frattare. Great to hear/see him again. Also great to see Bob Walk is still in the booth

BTW, the Bucs are winning 2-0.

Wtf is with the Chinese advertising behind home plate?

Bucs shutout the Dodgers 3-0. Santana with 2 SOs including Ohtani to close it out. Great win.

I know we are required to criticize the Pirates, and Nutting, and how lousy the team is and how awful the team will be but ... the 2026 Pirates are two legit bats away from being a very legit contender. The pitching is not good - it's great.

Starters
Skenes - the best. Seven pitches, any one of which would be the best pitch for a mortal
Bubba - incredible. 100 mph, with a 92 mph slider and a 91 mph change that embarrasses hitters
Ashcraft - 98 mph sinker, 93 mph slider, good change and a superior curve
Oviedo - 96-98 mph with a killer slider, decent curve
Keller - now the #5 guy after being opening day starter couple years back. Consistent 4.00 ERA guy, good health. Better than about 90% of #5 starters in the majors

Relievers
Santana - cut by two teams in 2024 but superb since joining Pirates. 95 mph, superb slider. Pretty much two-pitch guy, that's why he's a reliever
Mattson - another free agent. Wearing down a bit but fastball guy, 96-97 earlier, now 94-95. Good command, good slider
Nicolas - fans give up on guys waaaay too early. Dude has three filthy pitches - 99 mph fastball, 92 mph slider, curve.
Lawrence - Rockies castaway. Injury hampered 2025. Delivers sidearm, 96 mph fastball, nasty 88 mph slider, 2.42 FIP
Mlodzinski - 98 mph fastball, slider, split that is a bit inconsistent, and curve. 3.33 FIP, 2.15 ERA as reliever
Moreta - 94-95 mph, but heavy slider usage. Brutal on R-handers. Swing-and-miss guy but with control issues at times
Ramirez - interesting reliever. 98 mph, cutter, slider, and a good curve he should use more

This list does NOT include Jared Jones, due back in June or so next year, or Hunter Barco, lefty starter who has been superb in the minors with excellent command, 95 mph fastball, nasty slider. Team ERA is 3.78, 7th in the majors, and team FIP is 3.86 - 3rd in the majors. The pitching is legit, no, beyond legit - arguably the best in the majors given the depth.

Get two bats (LF, 3B). Yeah, costs too much, blah, blah but put legit bats in those spots and the hitting will be enough with Reynolds, Cruz, Gonzalez, Horwitz, 2 new guys, and perhaps Yorke and Flores.

The team is much closer than some believe. Two bats, Nutting - two bats.

I saw the pirates fired their pitching coach and they were top 10 in several categories. They also did not renew the contract of the assistant pitching coach. No idea what they are thinking
They have no clue.

The Pirates boasted one of the better pitching staffs in baseball this season, finishing with a 3.76 ERA, the third-lowest in the National League. The staff ERA had consistently improved each year, going from 5.08 in 2021 to 4.66 in 2022 to 4.60 in 2023 to 4.15 in 2024.

THIS is what is SO frustrating. You see it, I see it, the entire city of Pittsburgh sees it. But Cherington will go out and get an outfielder and an aging pitcher. Neither he or Nutting are baseball guys. Cherington is an analyst, and his philosophies are Soley driven by stats and trends.

Bats are a scarce commodity nowadays. Cherington did acquire Horwitz for Luis Ortiz, who was struggling before getting suspended during an investigation into his gambling so that deal is a massive winner. Horwitz wound up .272/.353/.434, one of the best hitters on the team.

I don't think he can get two bats in trades. That would mean dealing at least two quality pitchers. I think he can deal one and will need to hit on a free agent. Also, Reynolds needs to return to form and Cruz needs to ... something. Learn that a slider in the dirt is not a good pitch to swing at? Stop taking fastballs down the middle for strike 1, and then waving at a change-up that bounces in front of the plate for strike 2? Something.

The organization has made great draft picks with pitching prospects for certain!
But the captain Jack, oh Henry Davis, and other highly thought of young bats is what’s holding the team back from being competitive obviously.
An owner who gives a darn about winning would compensate for this in free agency..
