Perhaps Jake McGee doesn't need to beat out Xavier Grimble for a roster spot.

Jake McGee certainly looks the part a undrafted Tight End measuring in at 6'5 250 pounds. Originally signed with the Panthers, with short stints with the Raiders and Chargers. He is blocking capable obviously. What else is he is the five dollar question?.And here is your fifty cent answer.

What would it take for Jake to make the roster? Well I believe Jesse James has the starting job locked down, for now. So we look at what the Steelers look for and what the Steelers need.

I think the Steelers look for receiving options, which I think Jesse and Xavier bring that dimension to their game. Jesse being more of a move the chain type.Xavier is that slightly more athletic version, that comes with a little more suspect hands in comparison. Which leaves you with what the Steelers need. A pure blocking TE. Which is what David Johnson brings to the table. Which is McGee's skill set. Problem is to beat out say a David Johnson you need to be either a much better blocker. Not sure McGee can lay stock in that claim. Or either be adept in special teams or a slightly better receiver. Not sure Jake is athletic enough to nail down either of those traits. Which IMO leaves you too one dimensional to slide on the roster with the aforementioned Steelers tight ends.

Now here comes the wild card in all this. Would the Steelers consider keeping 4 TE's ? Perhaps they see enough of Jake McGee to keep him as a move blocker? To be that final 53 type player? I think Brian Allen is in consideration for that, if they don't consider him too raw at the corner-back position..Which very well can be the case with Allen. Maybe a unknown player to be yet be picked up off the final cut-down? It makes me lean to the answer in regards to Jake making the final 53 as, no. He is a fringe player who just doesn't do enough to stick. Not that he won't land on the practice squad. I think he will find a home there this year. And if injury comes to David Johnson, he is elevated to the roster. If injury comes to Jesse James OR Xavier Grimble? I think the best pass catching TE out there on the front office list, gets that look-see.

Tomlin constantly preaches about position flexibility. Players being able to obviously play more than one position, or have more than one skill set.

Which with Jake McGee is the elephant in the room.

Someone who watches the game more closely than me...what exactly does Jesse James do that much better than Xavier Grimble that has him a lock as the starter? Is Grimble THAT bad in the blocking department? Neither has consistent hands and Grimble is quite a bit more athletic.

Ben seems to have confidence in James

I think consistency at blocking, I think Jesse edges Grimble there. And for his drops so far this year, I thought last year Jesse had a better showing with his hands.

My impression of the two is Grimble will stretch the seam more, but Jesse will get you more first downs in regards to his route running....................

I read in an article that the only knock on James was his YAC.

. He caught 39 passes for 338 yards and three touchdowns on 60 targets last year, producing just 8.7 yards per catch and 5.6 per target.

Since I read that, I have been watching his catches and there is no YAC...or very little.

He's definitely not a speedster. He is a possession guy and a pretty good blocker. I think that is pretty much his ceiling.

Thanks for this post. I haven't been following the Steelers as much as I used to in the past, so I hadn't seen anything on McGee. But when Batch pointed out his blocking in the second preseason game I took notice. Been wondering about his chances since.

James is very tall, and as a blocker I think he knows how to get in the way and steer his man a bit better than Grimble. I have seen James occupying his man on some nice runs.

I'm thinking grimble could have a breakout season he came into camp in incredible shape if he stays healthy he's going to get a lot of underneath work with Bryant back in the lineup.

Grimble had a great game on Sunday. His block where he took out 3 people was beautiful. One at the point of attack and then threw one defender into another, knocking them both down. It looks like he is getting it, and it taking pride in blocking now. I could see him getting reps over JJ if he continues to improve.

As far as keeping 4 TEs, I don't think it would happen. I'd rather keep 7 WRs because I think our 7th WR would be more talented than our 4th TE.

EXCELLENT POST. The 3-man block was impressive. Grimble seems to be a more acrobatic athletic type catcher than Jesse James. James has pretty sure hands but Grimble seems to have developed a case of stickum as of late. Good competition is never a bad thing and if the push each other for starting / snaps, then so be it. Nice problem
