Jake McGee certainly looks the part a undrafted Tight End measuring in at 6'5 250 pounds. Originally signed with the Panthers, with short stints with the Raiders and Chargers. He is blocking capable obviously. What else is he is the five dollar question?.And here is your fifty cent answer.
What would it take for Jake to make the roster? Well I believe Jesse James has the starting job locked down, for now. So we look at what the Steelers look for and what the Steelers need.
I think the Steelers look for receiving options, which I think Jesse and Xavier bring that dimension to their game. Jesse being more of a move the chain type.Xavier is that slightly more athletic version, that comes with a little more suspect hands in comparison. Which leaves you with what the Steelers need. A pure blocking TE. Which is what David Johnson brings to the table. Which is McGee's skill set. Problem is to beat out say a David Johnson you need to be either a much better blocker. Not sure McGee can lay stock in that claim. Or either be adept in special teams or a slightly better receiver. Not sure Jake is athletic enough to nail down either of those traits. Which IMO leaves you too one dimensional to slide on the roster with the aforementioned Steelers tight ends.
Now here comes the wild card in all this. Would the Steelers consider keeping 4 TE's ? Perhaps they see enough of Jake McGee to keep him as a move blocker? To be that final 53 type player? I think Brian Allen is in consideration for that, if they don't consider him too raw at the corner-back position..Which very well can be the case with Allen. Maybe a unknown player to be yet be picked up off the final cut-down? It makes me lean to the answer in regards to Jake making the final 53 as, no. He is a fringe player who just doesn't do enough to stick. Not that he won't land on the practice squad. I think he will find a home there this year. And if injury comes to David Johnson, he is elevated to the roster. If injury comes to Jesse James OR Xavier Grimble? I think the best pass catching TE out there on the front office list, gets that look-see.
Tomlin constantly preaches about position flexibility. Players being able to obviously play more than one position, or have more than one skill set.
Which with Jake McGee is the elephant in the room.
