Part of the problem was the coaching. Butler had the defense lingering around last ning up is stupid college type formations playing heavy against the pass. Miami didn't pass, they didn't have to. They ran right over all the pass fenders butler had on the field. He has been more conventional going down the stretch in his play calling, fewer weird formations and more blitzing the run, fewer sub packages, less substituting. Butler got the message he was stinking it up I'll give him credit for that and since the defense is playing better.

Think it had more to do with 3 rookies learning to play in the NFL and Shazier and Dupree coming back from injury.
All the Steelers have to do is score on every possession and it won't be an issue.

Yep,, you could see Mitchell favoring the rookies coverage duties to protect them, that messes up everything. It takes time to gel, especially with rookies involved
Because Jones was one of those lousy first round draft picks that Tombert keeps running out there hoping something good happens so they don't look stupid.
Note that Jones didn't get benched until halfway through what is obviously his last season when they didn't exercise their 5th year option and there are no salary cap implications.

I also noticed that as you say, they waited till 1/2 way through. That in. Itself may have been decided way in advance as that gave Harrison enough snaps to stay near game shape but saved him for second half of season. Smart move if this is a part of the puzzle. I think FO knew this was Uncle Jarvis' last season unless a miracle occured, which it hasn't.

I rarely complain about draft picks unless they are on the Troy Edwards or Jamain Stephens level of stupid. Thinking back 90% of this board called that pick a bust BEFORE the draft. I'm not an expert but just based on the measurables and watching a couple of games it seemed pretty obvious that Jarvis did not have NFL talent that was consistent with his college stats. It took 4 years of Jarvis sucking out loud for the Steelers FO/coaching to see it.
If they took him in in the 6-7th round and kept him as a low priced backup and ST player I would have have bitched about it for 4 years. I think what really bothered me was that Eifert was obvious pick as the BPA and and and met a need and we just **** the bed and panic drafted. I would love to know who actually pulled the trigger on that pick.

Stack the line and make Moore beat us. Nothing kills the morale of a team like pounding the rock down your throat and making you say please stop. This time put Big Dan in the middle, Harrison on the outside setting the edge, Shazier and Timmons crashing down, and make Moore try to get the ball out of his hands before he's on his ***.
Is McCullars even getting n the field? Is he hurt?
Big Dan really struggles defending the run against the outside zone, and that's pretty much all the Dolphins do.

I was at this game, in the uppers. Jarvis could not hold the edge and he was ran at a lot..
I'm fine with "Anyone But Jarvis" but there's no way James Harrison would be healthy and effective right now if he was asked to take 95% of the snaps from Game 1 on. With all the talk about not running the wheels off Bell, some of you really want to do the same thing with a 38-year old linebacker.
No but you could see early in the Miami game that Jarvis was sucking out loud, no reason Harrison couldn't have played more in that game, and with the game on the line late, Jarvis Jones was out there with the starting D for Dallas final two td drives including the game winning drive.
Very true, but this game we have Harrison and Dupree outside, and Shazier who can run sideline to sideline. Tell Big Dan to take the guy in front of you and shove his *** as far into the backfield as possible
That's what Big Dan is there to do and the only thing he is capable of doing, but against the outside zone all it does it open up a sizable cutback lane. He has no ability to stay square and upright while moving laterally which is how you defend the outside zone. If Miami is smart, they will try to trap us in our base 3-4 (with Big Dan on the field) and run the outside zone all day. I'm not sure if they WILL do that because they primarily operate out of a 3 WR formation.
He's flashed a couple times this year (which is more than he did last year), but he still is not capable of putting even 10 solid snaps together in a game. He's actually better against the pass where his straight up-the-field bull rush is effective in dumping the center in the QB's lap (although someone else needs to be there to actually tackle the QB since Big Dan can't finish).
I agree. Clog up the middle. Hopefully draw a double team and the rest of the front 7 should have more creativity in applying pressure
If Jarvis was picked in the 3rd or 4th round and got 3rd or 4th round money, he would have been cut by now.
