Official Steelers training camp thread (updates)

Timmons is looking better than he has for a while. Jarvis Jones is being manhandled by Beachum who continues to get better every year it seems. Chick and Bud are showing promise as are some of the other guys. Jarvis does not look good unless playing against guys that are likely going to be working construction after the first cut downs.

Have you heard any word on our next LT(Alejandro)?

What a surprise Archer was the first one eliminated. Hands are too small.

Good thing he can catch one ball, since you know, that's what he has to do in an actual game. :friendly_wink:

Listening to Tunch & Wolf on ESPN 970 (yes, T&W are back!)...I'm gonna try to type as they talk
They are talking to Wexell....now with Gradkowski out all the other young 3rd string QB's are dragging practice down...the backup's keep dropping snaps and throwing terrible passes.

They are really impressed with Chickillo so far, looks like he was the #1 LB draft pick, a natural pass rusher, has flashed every practice, very smooth natural football player, runs 100% every drill
They are more impressed with Chickillo then with Budd Dupree so far, Chickillo follows BD in almost every drill and is performing much better.
They temper that though by mentioning Chickillo is a more polished player and Bud Dupree is very raw, so Chickillo should look better in a training camp situation..maybe because U Miami vs Kentucky

Jarvis Jones had some good one-on-one battle with Beachum.

Actually they all bowed out after attempting to catch ball number 5

So basically all SD does is transcribe audio & video into a blog?

Pretty much, but as Litos pointed out, they have a couple of guys there, but I'm not particularly into the play-by-play training camp coverage myself.

good points and I'll add to them a bit Archer seems to be making progress as a runner and catching the ball. There appears to be lots of ebb and flow between the players in the drills and one of the linebackers summed it up nicely in an interview. His comment was winning in a drill was not something to celebrate as some guys win or lose one day and do the opposite the next. Jones as in jarvis is looking better than expected by me. Cortez Allen is intercepting passes and playing rather well which is a big positive. With the athletic ability by both chick and Bud they may both turn into solid keepers for the team. Jarvis may begin to look like a player instead of a bust, McCullers is beginning to show promise as is Gethers. The steelers maybe doing well except at third string qb which is beginning to look like a dumpster fire. Really looks like a major waste of a draft pick for laundry jones so far in camp. Shamarko has been playing well and some other guys like fogg have flashed. Tight end clear is not looking like much James needs to develop and Miller and Spaeth are being made to look good compared to the other guys that are bordering on awful to projects.

Need to take these early reports with a grain of salt. At this point in training camp last season, Martavius Bryant looked completely lost. All the beat reporters were telling us that he was a huge project and not to expect much at all from his rookie season. Anyone remember Bryant's first preseason game (vs. the Giants last year)? He looked like ****.

Early camp phenoms often fade away quickly. Likewise, guys that look completely lost can come a long way in just a couple months with NFL coaching.

Tomlinisms on full display at Steelers camp

Jeremy Fowler, ESPN Senior NFL Writer
LATROBE, Pa. -- B.W. Webb was preparing for a drill during offseason workouts when he hears a familiar voice boom from the sideline.

"Waffle House!"

He didn’t have to look around to know the voice belonged to coach Mike Tomlin. He also knew his coach had ammunition for future ribbing sessions. Webb, a third-year Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback, was wearing a sleeve that said 'Waffle House.' He’s a big fan of the restaurant chain.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin uses good-natured teasing as a way to bond with his team. Jason Bridge/USA TODAY Sports
"Coach Tomlin will say anything," Webb said.

Tomlin has a unique style of running practices that borders on comedy. His words are predictable in media settings but not on a field, where arbitrary slogans or points of view prevail.

He’s constantly pacing, and talking.

"He talks about everybody," guard David DeCastro said. "He’s easy to talk to and be around, and there’s definitely some back and forth, but at the same time he’s still the coach and he knows where the line is."

When defensive tackle Steve McLendon walked into the dorms Saturday wearing a tanktop, Tomlin yelled from his open window on the second floor, 'Put your shirt back on.'

For Tomlin, the good-natured teasing builds camaraderie.

"I don’t really think a great deal about it. It’s part of team development," Tomlin said. "There’s also a time to enjoy each other and laugh a bit."

Here are a few examples of Tomlinisms blurted out since camp opened Sunday.

Mike, what you doing, getting naked?

Tomlin spotted safety Mike Mitchell re-adjusting his pads. As a result, he looked like he was taking his shirt off. So, Tomlin called him out. Mitchell joked that he was getting "acclimated" to the weather.

Seven shots, tackle football

This doesn’t really mean anything, which means it’s an effective Tomlinism. This could be a reference to the offense getting seven tries to move the football into the end zone.

We’re Feastin' over here

The defense had two interceptions in red-zone drills, so Tomlin started barking the feast line to the defensive sideline. "Man, we're feastin' over here. We're feasting right now," Tomlin said.

That’s a way to hunt

This can be heard after a defensive player pursues a ball-carrier with authority.

It gets sticky in there, young fella

This was Tomlin’s reaction when wide receiver Eli Rogers caught a ball over the middle and got smashed by two defenders.

Eli, 84's over there working. But you don’t have to stay. Don’t worry about it.

Rogers was walking off the practice field when Tomlin yelled clear across a field. When Rogers turned his head, Tomlin paused for dramatic effect, then points to wide receiver Antonio Brown, who’s known for his post-practice mini-workouts, and delivers his line.

Nothing very definitive other than he has had some decent plays and had some that were not so decent as well. That puts him much further ahead than the guys calling him a camp body earlier in the year allowed for. So far he sounds like a project that has occasional flashes and occasional lapses. Some guys like this kid Clear have not shown at least so far that they belong on a roster or in the NFL, in his case the word is poor routes, poor catching, and poor blocking. Sounds like a poor showing for him all the way around. Something to keep in mind though is for some of these young guys it might be a case of being overwhelmed with the change to a nfl environment vs there time in college. In other cases these guys may not be at the top tier of raw ability anymore and depending on the coaching they have had they may not have much else to rely on.

As another poster stated it seemed that Bryant was not going to be much but a big project at the beginning of the season but he really came around later on and it looks like he is continuing to develop in many ways.

Props to our all pro WR who has yet to receive his big contract matching his quality of work still modeling how to be greater than great!

Big PROPS to MT for sending a clear message to the rookie on the standard! Love his zinger "You don't have to stay. Don't worry about it"

I figured everytime we hear something someone can report what they saw / heard. Or if nothing else a report they saw floating around.

I will be (as I do every year) going twice, one for autographs/practice and one just for practice.

But here is one I saw just posted on Steelers Depot

New season Steelers fanatics, need a little excitement ?

This just does not get old.

What is up with Golson...I have not seen / heard any reports about him

of course any and all reports I read, it is just a little bit of whats going on now VS getting to hear something anything Steelers.

I will say the media has a way of saying one thing, that a fan can pick up on and get a whole different perspective.

Last year for what was said about Bryant the times I seen him in camp he ws looking good around the red zone.

I saw Heyward jumping Jarvis Jones **** and right there I knew Heyward was developing

and Jarvis well

wasn't

So yeah you take reports with a grain of salt, but for me still a fun watch and read to get me over to the regular season..............

Jarvis Jones was stoned 3 straight times tonight by Beachum and Villanueva, same old same old Uncle Jarvis then Nix stones him twice in a row on backers versus RBs,

Jarvis Jones 0 for 3 in one on one pass rush vs OL. Lost to Beachum twice and once to Villanueva. Also had a tough time in backs on backers.

Just wait until next year when he has another year to lift weights and get bigger... you'll see then.

I really hope they don't just award JJ a roster spot because of his draft status. Moats, BD, Harrison, Howard Jones, Chickillo, no need to keep someone who can't contribute.
