Listen I don't have a dog in this fight, I'm not a Penn State fan or a Paterno fan, but here is what always bothers me about this "Paterno is a monster, he didn't do enough by just reporting it to the Police!" arguments. Let's completely forget about football for a second and put this in the realm of any person that works around kids. I work in the field and have for 20 years so I can tell you that if somebody reports to you a child is being abused but you haven't witnessed anything, your ONLY recourse is to report it to CPS and the maybe the Police (although most times if you call the Police they are going to tell you to call CPS instead).
That's all you are legally PERMITTED to do....period. If CPS or the Police either don't investigate or investigate and find nothing, what is your next legal recourse? Call them and report it again immediately? They will tell you to get lost. A citizen's arrest? Call your Congressman? Good luck with that. There is nothing you can do short of going to that house as a vigilante and then getting arrested yourself for either assault or trespassing.
However, if you want to make the argument that Sandusky should have been monitored constantly when he was on the campus and never given the opportunity to be around kids if they had any suspicions at all, I can certainly get behind that for sure. If Paterno knew he was meeting with kids alone on campus, he definitely deserves guilt for that. I don't know if Sandusky was given free reign or if he was setting this **** up after hours when nobody was around. I know there were reports about people hearing stuff happening and possibly ignoring it. Whoever those people were if it's true are very guilty.
