Mr. Rooney is not obtuse to the situation

His words..
Thank goodness!

“You know, right now I don't think that anybody on our staff is a candidate," Rooney said. "Maybe a candidate to stay on the staff, depending on what the new head coach wants to do, but probably not as a head coach."
I don't like the part where he says some may be candidates to stay on staff ............. Hell no and please remove yourself from your position if you think there is anyone on this coaching staff worthy of retaining

I would rather have Rooney Mara or Kate Rooney Mara running the show instead of Art

Great post. It has to be an offensive minded coach. He can hire a good DC and let him handle the D, but the offense needs to evolve out of the late 90s and early 2000s.
I am 90% in favor of an offensive coach. I'm pretty much a hard no on Weaver and Flores. Minter would be meh. The benefit of Shula is he's coached under McVay and I'd gladly take a swing from just about anyone on his staff.

What the Steelers have been doing isn't working and taking a chance on a young offensive mind would truly signify they are approaching football differently. I think they have a duo in the front office (Weidl did come over from one of the top front offices in football) who are ready to modernize this team and they don't have an old-school head coach holding them back. (Appreciate everything Tomlin did for this organization, but we all know his style no longer cuts it for this team to truly contend)

Emperor Chaz also famously said something along the lines of not being a motivator, not paid for that. His job is to teach players the game, scheme, and their responsibility. If he had to motivate them, they should find another line of business.
I almost agree with that.
Cowher was 100% a motivator. But he was smart in that he surrounded himself with great OCs and DCs and assistants to teach, instruct, and develop the players. I’m OK with approach, too.
Absolutely. Watch the Rooney PC. Several times he refers to Tomlin as a "great leader" and if you notice no one in sports media has ever accused Tomlin of being a great Xs and Os guy.

Yes he needs to go too. I watched the whole press conference as sleepy potato Rooney knocked the starch off himself and got up to the podium to tell us several times that " With Mike we were always in contention."

Either the man was just being nice to Tomlin, and I REALLY hope that is the case or he is so out of touch that he actually believes that. He said it several times and the way it was phrased made me lean toward him actually believing it. Lord help us....
While it’s nice, from a fan perspective, to hear ownership grill the head coach like Biscotti did Hairball, I also think it sets the wrong precedent. No way, after all these years, would Rooney come up, and bad mouth the guy he chose to keep around this whole time. It’s lip service, and he doesn’t come off as a douche wannabe Don Corleone like Biscotti did.

What Art has to understand with this hire we need more than just a great leader.
In addition we need a coach that understands today’s game. One who can hire great coaches. Is schematically sound. Can develop players.Recognizes young talent and make them fit his schemes. Knows how to manage the game clock. Knows when to challenge and can win more often than not. Is not predictable with his defense and offense.
Knows how to keep his players disciplined.
All stuff his predecessor had issues with,

Well he also said that the incoming head coach would be free to pick his staff, but Smith is already interviewing for other jobs (both OC and HC), and well I don't think anyone wants Austin, especially if we are bringing in a DC to be the HC.

He also said he was bringing MT back because he had them "contending" every year, and taking a step back to rebuild is a "wasted year".

Yes. The logic of not wanting to finish with a bad record and get a top draft pick, instead always spinning your wheels...yet we were always "contending." That's one of the things that made me think he was not serious.

According to reports Rooney indicated he was surprised by Mike’s decision and that he couldn’t say for sure but it was probably family related over football related.

So if Rooney didn’t influence the situation then that leaves a concern for him remaining as the owner.

But there is also reports (coming out) of the Steelers making inquiries towards HC possibilities, 1-2 weeks ago.

I think Rooney knew what may be coming, just not going public with it.

I saw that too and thought it was strange. Along with MT's chest thumping and kiss blowing recently.

Dead on. I would surround myself with people smarter than me. You're going to get credit anyway as the HC when you win. Having great people around you always makes your job easier and the final product better.

They really need to invest in the staff across the board. It will pay off.

It was Andy Russell talking about when Noll first came in and he told the team if I have to motivate you,I will fire you.

I believe it was the show "A Football Life" Chuck Noll

Like smart CEO's in successful businesses do.

I interpret that as his goodbye and thank you.

At5 the time I hated it, but looking back I understand it.

Just be happy Tomlin is gone! Pushed? Jumped? Who cares?! Let's just be thankful.

Not about Mike it was more centered on would the current Rooney move on from the next coach in a timely manner if need be.

Just a convo lighten up Francis.

I am very happy that the ongoing process the look for a new coach. Hell the day I found out I was Tom Cruising in the living room celebrating.

😃

The last three head coaches all had success early. They all had at least one AFC Championship appearance in their first 4 years, and by year 6 all had made at least one Super Bowl with Noll and Tomlin winning one. Even when they weren't winning Super Bowls, all three regularly made the playoffs, so when the shine started to wear off (esp with Tomlin and Noll) they had built a fair amount of goodwill with ownership. I suspect if the new coach has several losing seasons with no sign they're building towards something better the Steelers will move on.

There's no need for me to lighten up. I wasn't being overly serious.

A great documentary.
Never knew Noll was the D coordinator for the Colts when they lost to Namaths Jets in the SB.

It was noted in the video by his wife that they never talked about that loss..,nor did they talk about the wins.

In Noll's first season, 1969, they won the opening game, so okay we're off to a good start, then proceeded to lose the next 13. 14 game season at the time.
But they got better each year and won the Super Bowl in his fifth season.
I'm not expecting world-beaters right off because the cupboard is pretty bare.
I just want to see incremental improvement each year.

The talent scouting team- Keep in mind that we don’t know the extent of how much tomlin over-road them in talent evaluation.

There is a chance that some scouting may be retained.

the main problem is we as fans don’t know the extent of the tomlin control.

I think with the tomlin gone, all aspects of the team will rise.

The team tomlin inherited when 1st hired by far, i meAN BY FAR, out-weighs what the Tomlin is leaving for the new coach.

Even coach Noll’s team was better rostered than what the tomlin is leaving behind.

I think that is why he was tired of coaching, they tried to make a final run the last two years with future HOF QBs past their primes and it fell flat. I think he knows what's ahead with this collective and didn't have the stomach for a rebuild.

Yeah he left Cowher guys like Rod Woodson,Dermontti Dawson and Greg Lloyd.

Two Hall Of Fame players in their prime and Lloyd if not for injury, would have been three.

The cupboard is pretty bare except for a few positions.
Still, I hope the new coach goes at least 8-8-1 so we can say "he never had a losing season".
