Mr. Rooney is not obtuse to the situation

His words..
Thank goodness!

“You know, right now I don't think that anybody on our staff is a candidate," Rooney said. "Maybe a candidate to stay on the staff, depending on what the new head coach wants to do, but probably not as a head coach."
I don't like the part where he says some may be candidates to stay on staff ............. Hell no and please remove yourself from your position if you think there is anyone on this coaching staff worthy of retaining

I would rather have Rooney Mara or Kate Rooney Mara running the show instead of Art

Great post. It has to be an offensive minded coach. He can hire a good DC and let him handle the D, but the offense needs to evolve out of the late 90s and early 2000s.
I am 90% in favor of an offensive coach. I'm pretty much a hard no on Weaver and Flores. Minter would be meh. The benefit of Shula is he's coached under McVay and I'd gladly take a swing from just about anyone on his staff.

What the Steelers have been doing isn't working and taking a chance on a young offensive mind would truly signify they are approaching football differently. I think they have a duo in the front office (Weidl did come over from one of the top front offices in football) who are ready to modernize this team and they don't have an old-school head coach holding them back. (Appreciate everything Tomlin did for this organization, but we all know his style no longer cuts it for this team to truly contend)

Emperor Chaz also famously said something along the lines of not being a motivator, not paid for that. His job is to teach players the game, scheme, and their responsibility. If he had to motivate them, they should find another line of business.
I almost agree with that.
Cowher was 100% a motivator. But he was smart in that he surrounded himself with great OCs and DCs and assistants to teach, instruct, and develop the players. I’m OK with approach, too.
Absolutely. Watch the Rooney PC. Several times he refers to Tomlin as a "great leader" and if you notice no one in sports media has ever accused Tomlin of being a great Xs and Os guy.

Yes he needs to go too. I watched the whole press conference as sleepy potato Rooney knocked the starch off himself and got up to the podium to tell us several times that " With Mike we were always in contention."

Either the man was just being nice to Tomlin, and I REALLY hope that is the case or he is so out of touch that he actually believes that. He said it several times and the way it was phrased made me lean toward him actually believing it. Lord help us....
While it’s nice, from a fan perspective, to hear ownership grill the head coach like Biscotti did Hairball, I also think it sets the wrong precedent. No way, after all these years, would Rooney come up, and bad mouth the guy he chose to keep around this whole time. It’s lip service, and he doesn’t come off as a douche wannabe Don Corleone like Biscotti did.

What Art has to understand with this hire we need more than just a great leader.
In addition we need a coach that understands today’s game. One who can hire great coaches. Is schematically sound. Can develop players.Recognizes young talent and make them fit his schemes. Knows how to manage the game clock. Knows when to challenge and can win more often than not. Is not predictable with his defense and offense.
Knows how to keep his players disciplined.
All stuff his predecessor had issues with,

Well he also said that the incoming head coach would be free to pick his staff, but Smith is already interviewing for other jobs (both OC and HC), and well I don't think anyone wants Austin, especially if we are bringing in a DC to be the HC.

He also said he was bringing MT back because he had them "contending" every year, and taking a step back to rebuild is a "wasted year".

Yes. The logic of not wanting to finish with a bad record and get a top draft pick, instead always spinning your wheels...yet we were always "contending." That's one of the things that made me think he was not serious.
