Moving forward with McCarthy

A little McCarthy draft history- picks by position for 3 rounds as HC

GB
2006- LB, OT, WR
2007- DT, RB, WR
2008- WR, QB, DB
2009- DT, LB, OT
2010- OT, DE, S
2011- OT, WR, RB
2012- DE, DT, CB
2013- DE, RB, OT
2014- S, WR, DT
2015- S, CB, WR
2016- DT, OT, OLB
2017- CB, S, DT
2018- CB, CB, ILB

Dallas
2020- WR, CB, DT
2021- DE, CB, DE
2022- OT, DT, WR
2023- DE, TE, OLB
2024- OT, DT, OC

5 LB's
9 OL's
8 WR's
15 DL's
3 RB's
1 QB
11 DB's

Looks like a tendency to load up the trenches & DB's to me. A guide to draft strategy when there are 12 picks upcoming?
Very good info, but how much influence did he really have in Jerry's world with the draft??

Update... the Browns ARE NOT hiring Nate Scheelhaase as their HC.

via @ESPN App http://espn.com/app

Greedy McCarthy needs to bring in Nate as the OC even though he calls the plays.

This is frustrating...
Would love to have Steelhaase, but dont think any up and coming offensive mind will want to come to pitt to be OC. McCarthy will be calling the plays and Steelers have no QB. May not be a good position for a riser to go and build a resume to be head coach...

An 80s Steelers rerun would still be an improvement in the playoffs on the last 9 years.

I don't think many fans fully appreciate the similarities between Steelers football in the 1980s and what we've seen over the past decade.

Noll was obviously a far greater coach than Tomlin, but both their tenures had become equally stale by the end, with change needed to the same degree.

Cowher was kind of an outlier (not just as it relates to the Steelers, but in general) in that his teams were still competing for Superbowls as late into his tenure as they were.

Six conference championship appearances and never more than 3 years between appearances in 15 years is impressive. Two of the games came the year following a missed playoff appearance.

I remember seeing a stat showing how between 1994 and 2004, five of the 11 AFC title games were played in Pittsburgh.

Cowher did come up short for the longest time, and I think not having the added pressure of playing at home helped a lot in 2005, but the guy regularly got the Steelers close and finally broke through.

They actually outplayed the Cowboys for much of that first Superbowl.

He has said he basically doesn't care what the fans think. So yeah, sounds like he wants the middle of the pack run to continue.

Tombstone, Wyatt speaking to the deadly gunfighter. “I’m not going to fight you Reno, there’s no money in it”

Rooney in It’s a Steelers life. “ I’m not going to fight to make noise in the POs, just a non-losing season, there’s money in it”

Mike McCarthy

Would not have been my first choice but he is the choice. So, after throwing a fit for a few days, I have no choice but to be all-in on my Steelers and their coach. If he succeeds, the team succeeds and my mental health improves during football season.

No, this is not a moment of maturity. I'm too old for maturity. Realism finds you when the liquor cabinet goes empty.

Longest stretch without a playoff win since Chuck Noll was hired in 1969.
But hey, isn’t “Never a losing season” better?

Chuck Noll was introduced as HC of the Steelers on Jan 27 ('69) and Mike McCarthy was hired on Jan 27 ('26) ... Let's hope that's not the only thing they have in common in regards to their time with the Steelers.

I know there's not many Tomlin Fanbois on this board, but hypothetically......

If Big Mac* wins a Super Bowl in the next year or two, will it mean that:
1. He won his Super Bowl with Tomlin's team? (Keep in mind that he only kept three of Tomlin's staff where Tomlin had all but three of Cowher's staff.)
2. Tomlin sucked because Tomlin couldn't even win a playoff game with Tomlin's team.

*Since I'm sort of the anointer of nicknames around here, I have decreed that McCarthy's nickname on SN.com shall be "Big Mac".

Tomlin get’s no credit. Albeit, they are tomlin’s players but the win would be credited to McCarthy.

tomlin couldn’t win a po game for nearly 10yrs with his players, so a year or two later, the new coach wins………. Not fund to credit the tomlin at all.

I'm on board with Mac. I'm not sure why the John Harbaugh brand was so hot, but I think Mac is a better coach (better than Tomlin too). I also hope we don't bring Rodgers back. Time to get on with the future. Either sign WIllis or trade for Jones or see what Howard's got.

I think (it is early) the Steelers will draft a QB somewhere within the first three rounds and have them compete for the start with Will.

He's in the same situation in LA.

Rumors on the Twitters are that Rodgers or Kyler will be the guy. 🤮

Or Kirk Cousins. I don't think Deuce will let them go with Howard or Willis. Too young and not enough experience.
Deuce wants to keep that non-losing streak going as much as Shades did.
Heck with developing players, my legacy will be non-losing seasons.

Kyler's contract for any team that trades for him is $42m in 2026, $36m in 2027 and $46m in 2028. Yeah...Naahhhhh!.
Yeah all the Steelers need is an injury prone midget.

That would be a highly bad decision…

Steel town only likes midgets doing WWE style wrestling. No midget qb's. Kyler, Willis, even Kenny....too small. I think qb should be at least 6'4".

Darnold who I was pushing for in free agency is 6’3. Stafford, Darnold those gunslingers are always my favorite type of QBs. Big strong armed who can get the ball where it needs to go while standing tough in the pocket.

Just as important as getting the QB right is making sure the WR group is deeper than DK Metcalf &....umm....

Now, I expect Calvin Austin gets resigned.

But here are a few FA names that have played under McCarthy or Adam Henry- Cedrick Wilson, Brandin Cooks, Gabriel Davis, Romeo Doubs, Noah Brown.

Wouldn't surprise me, along with a draft pick or two, if we see at least one of these guys targeted in FA to play opposite DK.

All of that list are UFAs?
