Moving forward with McCarthy

A little McCarthy draft history- picks by position for 3 rounds as HC

GB
2006- LB, OT, WR
2007- DT, RB, WR
2008- WR, QB, DB
2009- DT, LB, OT
2010- OT, DE, S
2011- OT, WR, RB
2012- DE, DT, CB
2013- DE, RB, OT
2014- S, WR, DT
2015- S, CB, WR
2016- DT, OT, OLB
2017- CB, S, DT
2018- CB, CB, ILB

Dallas
2020- WR, CB, DT
2021- DE, CB, DE
2022- OT, DT, WR
2023- DE, TE, OLB
2024- OT, DT, OC

5 LB's
9 OL's
8 WR's
15 DL's
3 RB's
1 QB
11 DB's

Looks like a tendency to load up the trenches & DB's to me. A guide to draft strategy when there are 12 picks upcoming?
Steelers need a WR, DE, G, CB and a FS and QB.

For the most part that lines up.

I am sure free agency will narrow the needs down as I suspect they will be active..

I like his release I like his accuracy. I am not putting all my eggs in Howard’s basket. I am sure neither will the Steelers.

He was slated to go higher and dropped. That is where the grey area comes in. How far should he drop.

I am happy with your second options, still with the critical nature of the QB position I presume the Steelers draft one.

I am not locked into drafting him in 1 but I also like some things about him.
Which to me makes him a three same with the other kid. Trinidad Chambliss. Im certainly not putting every egg in that basket with Howard. But I just think outside Mendoza there aren't any bigger eggs this year. Howard's stats and eye test in his last year at OSU were at least as good. Im assuming Rodgers returns. It won't be public till after OTA but you will know when FA starts what their plan is. If you could go Rodgers, Howard and a third round to fight it out with Howard......great. just no Q. At 1.21. No way.

Aaron isn’t guaranteed to return I presume by the draft we will have a better feel for the position.

Ok with a third rounder or ultimately whatever rookie QB they choose if they choose one.

Im pretty sure they will know before the FA period begins. He just doesn't want to be pressured to do anything offseason with the team. Especially in this offense he doesn't need any of that anyhow. I'm fine with a shotgun approach to getting a QB of the future so long as until its a more sure thing they go later rounds.

I don't think McCarthy will have much of a choice. Weidl's draft boards focus on premium positions.

2025 NFL Average Salary Ranks, per Spotrac and the Steelers day 1 or 2 picks and day 3 picks since Khan/Weidl took over.

QB - Howard
OT - Jones, Fautanu
EDGE - Herbig, Sawyer
WR - Wilson, Metcalf (via trade)
IDL - Benton, Harmon, Lee, Black
G - Anderson, McCormick
CB - JPJ, Trice, Kent
S - Watts
C - Frazier
TE - Washington
ILB - Wilson, Bruener
K
RB - Johnson

I give the Raiders whatever they want. That includes Washington, TJ Watt,Tomlin, Art Rooney, the trainer that poked TJ's lung and Missy Mathews. I also give them all our draft picks(think Ditka at the Saints+Ricky Williams.) GIVE ME MENDOZA! As we will be running the WCO...he is perfect.

Seems like a solid choice what say you?
Doesn't move the needle either way. Bills didn't develop Coleman, but Shakir has been good. It's a tough eval on coaches when they're working with studs like Lamb and OBJ. If he can keep our WRs heads on straight that will be impressive enough.

****-that, Missy stays in my camp.

At 21, I don’t see him as a reach.

I think that is good value for him there…
If Simpson's available at 21, I suspect he will still be available at 53, and maybe even 76 and 85. I think if the Jets are going to draft Simpson, they take him at 16, and I don't think he moves the needle enough for Miami or Arizona to move on from Tua and Murray respectively. The rest of the NFL (except maybe the Rams if they decide it's time to draft a Stafford replacement) already have their quarterback, or are going into 2026 with a second/third year QB still under assessment.

Again, people seem to think a great purge of the roster is coming... but thats not what Rooney said, and not what this move is a harbinger for... they are gonna reload and try again.. so I am expecting mist of the guys from last year with a few tweaks.. I think it will be the same QBs, one or two new WRs, i think the oline will be the same or mostly the same, I think Gainwell
May leave, but there isnt gonna be a big move at RB

Like honestly, they probably are gonna be reupping their own FA's and maybe adding Aiyuk or something..

I think people expecting major trades or more than one or two FA adds are fooling themselves
Agree. I think they believe they have something in Howard/Rodgers and need only develop them and build on a playoff team and get over the hump.

I dontvthink Howard factors in at all... Rooney doesnt want a rebuild... he wants to win with what they have. McCarthy gets tgem Rodgers for one more year...

Saying Howard might be the guy just lets them punt on picking a QB and take more immediate impact guys

The value being floated out there is a Day 2 pick for Murray. Not sure what his cap hit would be. I don't think he's good enough to make that type of move despite being possibly one of the only options this offseason.
If Murray cannot be the franchise, and I honestly struggle with his size, health, and consistency, why bother. Roll with Howard and see what we got OR move up in the 2027 draft as we limp through 2026.

We've seen where Rodgers can get them. A year older, he's going to need the defense to improve and bolster the weapons on offense. Next year's schedule is relatively easy on paper.

We'll have another vet free agent either way. If A-Aron doesn't come back, I give it 60/40 that he does, they will sign another vet free agent.
I get the feeling that Deuce wants to keep that non-losing seasons streak alive.
Don't listen to what people say, watch what they do.

He has said he basically doesn't care what the fans think. So yeah, sounds like he wants the middle of the pack run to continue.
