More Tomlin Clock Mismanagement -- Honest to God, I Can't Take Much More

Oakland completes the long pass for a first-and-goal at the Steelers' 7. There's 1:53 left on the game clock, and the Steelers have two timeouts remaining.

As soon as the guy is tackled, I'm screaming at the TV for a timeout. Tomlin doesn't hear me. He lets Oakland bleed the play clock down to 4, they snap the ball at 1:16, and run the ball up the middle. 37 seconds gone.

Surely, surely they'll use one of the timeouts now with 1:10 left, yes? Tomlin thinks not. He lets Oakland run the play clock down to 5, they snap the ball at 0:34, and throw an incompletion. 36 seconds gone.

Does anyone else think the Steelers could have used an extra minute-thirteen there at the end of the game?

This ************ is going to give me a heart attack, if I'm not careful. I love the Steelers, but I've got to start investing less emotion in them, as long as Mike Tomlin is at the controls.

Then the stupid **** wasted one after the incompletion, when the CLOCK WAS ALREADY STOPPED!

Poor clock management, inability to make adjustments, poor defensive schemes, doesn’t put his players in the best position to be successful, constantly out coached, plays down to the lesser teams, team is poorly prepared, always slow starts to the season, looks past the next opponent (see Jags playoff loss), has not developed any defensive backs, team lacks discipline.
Without Ben this guy would have a losing record.

So someone here, please tell me what he does well aside from being a cheerleader?

He flaunts the latest sideline apparel well. Those new nike sweaters really bring out the color in his shades

then to compound it he finally does call 1 on a dead ball before the 4th down play...o I'm sure to get in a perfect defense to allow a wide open TE

Agree to an extent. Because you also don’t expect your starting middle linebacker wait five seconds before deciding to follow a second string tight ends who’s crossed his face with zero desire to block him. Williams effort/execution on the second raiders td was garbage.

Vince isn't a starting LB in this league, but somehow that ************ ends up starting on this team every week.

I agree on Vince, but if you watch the replay, it looked like Dupree dropped off and Vince was supposed to pass the TE off to Dupree, which is why Vince reacted the way he did after the play.
The fact they expected Vince or Dupree to cover a TE is crap.

Have not posted in quite a while.

This game is a crowning achievement. This head coach, truly, does not understand how to manage an NFL team.

Losing the next 3 likely won't be enough to end the Tomlin era, if the games are close. A couple of blowouts by the Pats and Saints might have the desired affect.

Yep. At 1:53 he had two choices: let them score or take the timeouts and try to preserve as much time as possible. He not only does neither, he makes it worse by wasting a timeout during a stopped clock so his genius defensive mind gets the right call out there. I can't take it any more, I just can't. He flat out sucks at game management and running a defense.

You take that timeout every, single, time. That maximizes your chance to score, and the Steelers wouldn't have had to kick right away. Another 30sec, and you're going for the outright win.

Yep or the very least you get alot closer for the FG

Anyone remember what Cowher did in the SB against the cards when he know our defense couldn't stop ****? he let them score and put the game in Bens hands, That is what a good coach would have done yesterday. Earlier this year Ben was on the side lines with less than two minutes to play saying they left us to much time and he was right. we just let them score last night and I believe with all my heart we win that game

Tomlin's use of the red flag cost us time out this year too. I once said the Steelers should hire a professional time outs coach. Mikey's one of the worst clock management coaches sin the NFL.

Ummm that was Tomlin coaching in that SB, unless I'm missing a joke there?

No he's average. Last year he was excellent. Trouble is, if he wants to get better, he can't make those mistakes.

The clock didn't lose that game. The kicks did.

It was Tomlin, and I don't think they "let" the Cards score. Fitz got a great break on an inside slant and the defense was split wide expecting a downfield throw. James ran his *** off trying to catch Fitz, but it wasn't going to happen.

I don’t recall ever hearing the Steelers let them score there. The only time I be heard of that was either Holmgren or Shanahan (forget which one) doing it in the Super Bowl to get the ball back.

Yeah you're not letting a team score when they're 50 yards away or whatever it was

I am done with this season. The Steelers have superb personnel on offense, the best WR in the NFL, one of the top-5 QB's in the NFL, some very good players (Watt, Haden, Heyward, Tuitt) on defense, and are a **** team.

That belongs to one person, and only one - Mike Tomlin. His idiocy in failing to call timeouts was obscene.

Hey, Mikey, the Raiders are on the SEVEN ******* YARD LINE with 1:50 in the game. They can run 8 plays if they want ... so you think they run out of time??

No, dumbfuck, only the Steelers had the clock as an enemy at that point. Mike Tomlin would be a decent high school coach, if he had the best players. Beyond that? He is in way over his head.

I disagree. The problems on this team falls on Tomlin/Butler/ and a ****** S coach.

All three have contributed to the suck.

The team reflects its stupid, careless, idiotic coach. Remove that problem and the others will soon be gone, i.e., a decent head coach steps in to change the defensive scheme that continually has LB'ers covering WR's, replace the crappy kicker, etc.

The Steelers are a fish rotting from the empty head down.

Tomlin may have been thinking the Raiders were going to score on virtually any play and wanted to save the TOs for Ben to use.

That's got to be his line of thinking.
Instead of Ben would be throwing and any incompletion would have stopped the clock. Or a spike. We quite obviously were not going to be running the ball in any situation when we got the ball back.

Then why did he blow one after an incompletion on third down? He's a ******* moron!

Because he brilliantly deduced at that point, "Wow, just 25 seconds left in the game before the 4th down play. Those timeouts are useless as **** on a bull. May as well use one!!"

He also didn;t take one on the last drive. He flew home from Oakland with a timeout left in his pocket, dumb ************.

Can't he turn in leftover timeouts at Giant Eagle for a free hot dog?

Seriously, that would give me some explanation for his inane, stupid, moronic failure to use the timeouts when the game was in the balance and the clock was the enemy.

Think about that for a second. I am absolutely serious here. Leftover timeouts = free hot dog at Giant Eagle would be more comforting here than the truth - Tomlin is too stupid to use the timeouts.

It would be funny if it weren't so sad. How in the hell can you leave a game with a TO when the other team left you mere seconds to score to tie the game? How? Seriously how in the **** is that even possible? Does he not know that he needed to use his TO on defense?
