Mock It - from Walter Football

I get what you are saying but I feel what this team needs is a plug and play edge guy or cover guy that makes the team better now. Not three years down the road that might be a superstar. Someone like Dupree or Shazier (without the injuries hopefully). This team is so close, and made no upgrades in FA. They need plug and play defense now.

Dupree came raw out of college, lots of athleticism but he lacked technique and that was bad coaching. He still got playing time because he is an athletic freak.

But yeah I get you, we need a guy that can start by week 8

I understand drafting for need but sometimes that means you draft Troy Edwards instead of Javon Kearse. Or Jarvis Jones instead of Eifert.

I know Njoku is rated higher, but I'd prefer Evan Engram, wouldn't even mind if they take him at 30. As big as a TE and as fast as a receiver, and we know MT like speed above almost all else.

And does no one like Jabrill Peppers anymore? What happened to his value?

Peppers concerns me a bit because i'm not sure he can be anything more than a hybrid LB/S. Like Taylor Mays. The reason i'd be Grudgingly OK with Peppers is because he can also be a return man and some think his best NFL position could be RB. I could see him be used as a backup RB.

if he can be a return man, backup RB, and nickel defender, that's a lot of bang for the buck even if he's not a star at any of them.

1 OLB Wattt
2 CB Desmond King
3 TE Butt
3 B OLB Carl Lawson
4 DT/DE Nazir Jones
5 RB James Conner

TJ Watts seems like such an easy pick. It's a huge need and it seems that with Watt's energy and athletic tools, the worst case scenario is that he's merely a decent 8 sack per year wingman and not a star. With as poor as the OLBs have been the last few year's i'd sure take that to the bank.

But that may be the problem. Does desperation cause you to play it safe? You take that easy double instead of swinging for the fences. Watt kind of feels like that to me. I like him and i'd be fine with the pick but is that because he is the best player or because he makes us feel safe that he won't be a bust?

Safe doesn't always mean limited upside. Look at a guy like Bell. Not exactly a special talent coming out of the draft and into the NFL, but a guy that worked his butt off to get to the top of his craft. If you think Watt has a high floor and will work to develop into a top pass rusher, take him. He's not necessarily my top choice, but I would not be disappointed if they took him.

1. Watt OLB
2. Godwin WR
3. Butt TE
3. Griffin CB
4. Fish Smithson FS
5. Myrick CB

The reason I like Watt so much in this draft (although I think GB grabs him right before us) is that he has displayed way more technique and awareness than most guys at the position who have been doing it for years. He only started one year at the position and was a TE prior. He also played the spot decidedly light because of the transition AND because he suffered knee injuries (to each leg) in consecutive years WHICH would make it difficult to add weight/strength to his lower half. I compared him to Ryan Kerrigan (who I think is the very best technician as an edge guy in the NFL) who ALSO started out as a freshman TE. He did NOT have the knee issues and his first year production and skillset compares favorably to TJ's first year. Put it this way, I believe if TJ stayed and played his Senior year, he would be a top 10 pick, IMO. After getting another year removed from major knee injury and able to put on another 15-20 pounds of lower-end muscle, he would be able to hold the edge in contain better without having to be Troy Polamalu and 'guess' the play to make up for lack of power. We don't ever get a shot at a top 10 pick but that's what I think he would be with added power. He already has really good hand use which can be difficult to teach. (I liken it to getting a QB to run through progressions in a live game, it either comes natural or it ends up being a slow road to try to make it second nature). He has the gift of mental quickness that cannot be taught.

Like I said, I think he'll be gone by our pick but a guy like Bowser is more ready to play on 3rd downs as a spell for Deebo due to his ability and experience dropping into coverage. Maybe we can get him or a Rivers or Hendrickson with the #2. Bowser, to me could develop along the track of Eli Harold who was drafted in the 3rd (I think) and added significant weight before he started to become a presence this past year. The ONLY way we get an OLB who can come in and be a 8-10+ sack per year guy is to get lucky or have a terrible record.

supe if we were a 4-3 team Peppers would be easier as in a 3-4 it would take time to find his true position whether OLB/MLB or SS

think so? I see him as only a SS in the 3/4. As he is a little light in the pants to be a ILBer/OLBer.

yep. Peppers at OLB.
god. damn.

No thank you on Kizer as our #1. Other than Montana, Notre Dame QB's pretty much suck in the NFL. They better grab more defense with that first pick.

RD1- TJ Watt Edge Wisconsin
TJ has the pedigree and desire to be an elite pass rusher. His motor is relentless and he relies a lot on that as he was a TE and converted to defense. I feel he has upside as he gets coached up on the position. Not a great athlete but above average. I think another year at Wisconsin and he might have climbed into the top 10. This year he rotates with Harrison and is a special teams ace.

RD2- Jabrill Peppers S Michigan
Again, I get an unfinished product. What is Peppers? Safety? LB? Return Man? I probably use him at all three to be honest. I think he will be a in the box safety allowing Davis to play high safety. But in sub packages I would be him in at ILB. I also would like to see him take AB off of return duty year one. We don't need him to start this year but he would give depth, be a special teams ace, and be in on certain sub packages.

RD3a- Sidney Jones CB Washington
I know he likely won't play this season but I look at it as we are stashing away a 2018 first round pick with all a year worth of playbook and NFL tape and coaching knowledge for a late 2017 draft pick. If he wasn't hurt there's no way he is not picked before we draft in the first round.

RD3b- Howard Wilson CB Houston
I really don't see that big of a difference in WJIII and Wilson. WJIII is probably a little more athletic but I think Howard has more upside. I feel this negates our Jones pick a little and gives us two young CB's to learn and gives us a lot of options if Cockrell is not resigned. Also, probably means the end of William Gay.

RD4- Tyus Bowser LB Houston
Again, too much talent to pass up. We already got Watt but Dupree hasn't taken the next level step and Chickillo and Moats are NFL backups at best. Bowser I feel is athletic enough to play ILB or edge depending on need. I think his best football is ahead of him and feel he is too good of a value to pass up here.

RD5- Ryan Switzer WR North Carolina
Funny thing is Price is the best pick from Walter at this point lol. But I already got two edge/LB's so I finally go to offense. Switzer is a glue handed slot receiver with awesome return ability. With Bryant coming back and Eli Rogers emerging and Ayers looking good do we need him? No, and in fact I would be fine with going edge a third time and taking Price. I just changed things up a bit. I think our offense is set to win now and our defense is a pass rush and two DB's away from being dominant. Well, we don't need dominant we need good. I feel the first 5 picks we should get better and with what we got last year hopefully good. Switzer is luxury pick but I feel he makes the 53 man and probably pushes Ayers off the team.

RD6- Tarik Cohen RB NC A&T
Cohen is a change of pace back who should be able to come in on special packages or to spell Bell. Probably not going to be your work horse but he can take some third and long snaps away from Bell and give us a little flash on offense.

RD7- Jerod Evans QB VT
Gives us a camp arm and some competition for Mettenberger/Jones. I think Evans would be a perfect PS player for a year and see what he can develop into for next year. But gives us something to work with while Roethlisberger ponders retirement. I am fine going QB round 2 or later but I feel there probably won't be value as such a weak QB class should be pushed up boards not down. Talent wise Evans has the arm, legs, and body you look for and another year at VT would have done him very well. But we get to see what he can learn with only risking a 7th round pick.

biggest problem I have with Peppers is I think what he is destined to play is SS. And Davis will occupy that role for a long long time....
