Miss Pouncey Yet?

The game I watched, the whole OL looked like they went on sabbatical after the 1st quarter. Wallace was bad, but then, so was everyone. I don't think Pouncey would have fixed what happened yesterday.

Felt like we went 5 wide with short routes to minimize the front 4 of the Rams. After Q1 we went to regular routes and ultimately this is where Ben got sacked and then the hit to the knee. The short passes were eating the Rams up and we went away from it. It's something that would work well for Vick if they play off our WRs this week.

Cody Wallace is and always has been straight trash. I'm not sure how you guys don't see Sean Mahan when you watch him get fist-****** out there.
 
I mentioned that Wallace would have a big challenge vs the rams in my post last week. Unfortunately, he didn't rise to the challenge and lacked the athleticism to compete.

In line play, if your center is the weak link, your entire line looks bad. That's as bad as they can look last week, and it started on the inside. Foster suffered as well, and neither could help Beach. The dominoes fell across the left side of the line last week, and then landed on Ben's knee.

Does having an all pro center eliminate the issues of the line against that caliber of front 4? Maybe not, but I think we would have looked better than we did yesterday if we had Pouncey.
 
Beachum stood out because of two bad drive killing penalties, Wallace had one as well, but Foster... was the worst of the bunch, he fell for the swim move EVERY SINGLE TIME, and it wasn't in different directions, he was constantly thrown to the right...He made ONE play against that move all game, luckily it was when we needed to run some clock and Bell got a BIG chunk of yardage...but he's the reason Vick had the ball stripped, he's the reason Bell had someone in his face as soon as he got the ball on a handoff, he's the reason they kept blitzing off the right side of the line like that. As bad as the entire OL was, Foster was the worst. He couldn't even hold on to GET a penalty he was tossed aside so quick.

Pouncey wouldn't have helped yesterday, IMO. In fact, Wallace might have been our 2nd best OL in the game. Beachum, Foster and DeCastro were worse. The strength of the Rams DL is their quickness and playing 'technically sound' a half step late won't get it done against this DL.
 
DeCastro had a worse day than Wallace.

I miss Beachum from 2014 more than anything else.
 
Remember Pouncey had the same issues with the rats last year in the playoffs. He struggles against big strong DLs. The OL was blown up last year against the rats even with Pouncey.

I respect what you're saying Buck but I think what Pouncey can do that Cody does not do as well is get to the next level for that second block and don't think he can pull like Pouncey, but he's doing a good job though. I don't want to make it sound like he's not. I'm glad we have him.

I'll tell you though I'm concerned about the LT for this football team. I was pretty sold on Beachum and re-signing him but I don't think he's starting out too well this year. I'd like to see an upgrade next year at LT.

Hurt, I'm not saying that I'm not grateful for the effort that Wallace is putting in. Heck, I'm not even saying the guy isn't a good journeyman center. It's just that for the last 3 weeks, some folks were going overboard with the Pouncey hate. And in my opinion, there is no way that Wallace is as good a center as Pouncey. As you say, Pouncey is better at getting to that second level and at pulling. He's more mobile/agile ... athletic. When it comes to flat out strength, Pouncey doesn't match up to some of the elite centers we've had here in the past (Webster, Dirt). He's probably more of a technician than Wallace, but again, not on the level of our H.O.F. centers of the past. Nasty? I'd say Wallace may play with a more nasty disposition ... in part because he's simply not as "good" naturally as Pouncey.

And I agree, I'm concerned about Beachum. A good portion of what made him one of the highest rated LTs in the game was his focus on technique and mental strength. It's obvious he's not the biggest or strongest LT in the game. So far this year, he doesn't seem to be the same guy that we've seen in the past. I hope he gets it together.
 
You guys realize this which of course you do but being that Vick is left handed now his blindside protection comes from Marcus Gilbert. Hope the big man is up to the task.
 
Gilbert ... for as much **** as I've given him in the past ... is playing some decent ball. (That hurt).
 
Haley must call some outside runs for Williams and use archer 4-5 plays at least hb slip screen
 
I was never a big fan of beachum, but he has been soild at least until this year. I think that he maybe playing himself out of a big contract. The whole oline stunk yesterday. Pouncey would have made 0 difference. People seem to forget that until yesterday we had the leading rusher in the AFC. The Rams front seven is good. Pouncey often got abused by guys like Ngata so thinking he would have magically protected Ben is a fairy tale. Pouncey is a better player that Wallace, but the all-pro title is all media hype. He has not been all-pro since his rookie year. I am sure the oline will be fine moving forward.

Ok, Cody Wallace has been in the league for 7 years (drafted in 2008, 4th round) and has played for the following teams: 49ers, Texans, Jets, Lions, Buccaneers and Steelers. He has been with the 49ers for 2 years and all the others for one year, except the Steelers, there is a reason for this and not because his contract is cost prohibitive. If Maurkice Pouncey were to hit the open market as a center he would be unemployed for 15 minutes and in all likelihood get paid as the top center in the league. Cody Wallace may be at his last stop regardless of the reason he becomes unemployed, whether it be injury, contract or retirement. Seriously, thinking that this guy is Maurkice Pouncey without the ability to get to the second level or pull on a sweep is just hating on Pouncey for whatever reason, his support of Hernandez, tweets posted after a playoff loss or the alleged issues he and his brother had in Miami.

Really, take a clear look at the offense and tell me it functions the same with Wallace as it does with Pouncey. Le'Veon Bell is the biggest loser in the Pouncey injury debate.

You mean like the fact Williams was leading the AFC in rushing and averaged over 30 points per game till the rams game? I do not hate Pouncey and I think he is a good player, but I do not think he is an elite irreplaceable player.

That's a great point. Now our QB's blind side is on the strength of our line! Vick may just take off running if the left side misses an assignment.

I'm not going to get into the quality of the defenses or any of that because its purely subjective, but what isn't subjective is the fact that Wallace has bounced around the league for 7 years and there must be a reason for that. Unless, of course, the talent evaluators for 5 teams are completely wrong about what Wallace brings to the table, its possible I suppose, but unlikely.

I think most people don't like Pouncey the person and they let that cloud their judgment about his abilities. The Steelers are going to need Cody Wallace to step up big time over the next 6 games, my guess is that he will be seeing a lot of defensive tackles whether it be a 4-3 DT or a 3-4 NT lined up directly in his grill. Aaron Donald was beating him with quickness and power once he started lining up directly over Wallace. At least it appeared that way.

IMO, the Steelers are a better football team with Pouncey on the field and not on the sideline and so far, Wallace has done a great job of filling in, he's going to have to do it for quite a few more games and for at least four of those games, Ben isn't going to be the quarterback and that will make a difference.

Conversely it also means that roll out passes are run to the weak side of the line.
