Mike DeCourcy says the Steelers should move on from Bell

I think people here are confusing the draft picks you get for someone signing a non exclusive franchise player with trading the rights to a franchise player...

When a team signs a franchise player away from another team they MUST have their own first rounder to play the two firsts price... when a team trades the rights to a franchise player they can do so for any value they want... their own first, someone elses, a seventh round pick and a tub of potato chips....

One is involuntary the other the team agrees to... the Steelers absolutely can trade Bell to the Browns fans for their Fourth overall, but we all know that isn't happening ...lol

The Steelers can't do that. By Rule if Bell is Franchised you can only get the other teams slotted first round picks for 2 drafts in a row.

Decent article, but for someone that is writing an article talking about fantasy football stats and paper champions, he then bases his entire article on stats and paper numbers seems a bit hypocritical to me. What stats never do is tell the whole picture, especially about someone like Bell. Stats don't address their blocking ability that protects the QB. Stats don't show that teams rarely cover Bell out of the backfield with a LB and almost always assign a DB or Safety to him. This frees up a defender on Brown, JuJu, or Bryant and sets us up for success in the passing game. His delayed running style should actually be very beneficial in the play-action passing game, but Haley was not a fan of the play-action pass for whatever reason. As for his running game, for someone his size, Bell is actually pretty good at getting the tough yards and finding the sticks. He definitely lacks the explosiveness and speed to break long runs, but that type of speed is becoming harder to find as the LB, DB, and S are all getting faster and able to run down plays better. I would not break the bank to pay a running back, especially given the deficiencies we have on the defensive side of the ball, but that article does not tell the whole picture.
I disagree. The fact is no matter what the whole story is, they can't offer him what he wants because all other positions will suffer. If they tag him he will be disgruntled and if he could bring that up before Tue most important game of the years for the TEAM he will do it all of next year and will become a distraction. So tag him and try to trade him and get something in return

A whole season of distractions, think one more bothers them?

Exactly. How did that work out for the Ratbirds with Joey The Brow's contract?
Either do the non-exclusive tag (but I don't think anyone will give up two 1st rounders for him) or tag him with the idea that you already have a trade in the works and his new team will pay him an extension with what he wants. Of course you don't want to trade him to anyone who's good because their draft slots won't be high.

I've got a few, Posting about the draft and GM moves for the upcoming season here is one of them.

The off season is where championship teams are built. And since you are dying to know, I think the Steelers should do the following

1 ) Find a better Head coach. Tomlin's folly is well know here when he lose, and often masked by great play when we win
2 ) Move Bell for the best possible offer, we can't afford him, and use the pics acquired to draft the 1st or 2nd best back on the draft board
3 ) Match value and need for the draft at ILB, S, and NT

a year ago the thought of trading Bell was crazy to me. Even now I just don't see it happening, but bottom line is we need to get something for him or out of him. either he plays for us 1 more year minimum or he is traded for multiple draft picks. we absolutely cannot just let him walk away and get nothing.

If he stays then we don't really have to worry about drafting offense and can focus on defense again. if he goes then we get extra draft picks and focus on defense again. pick up a free agent rb pay him 1/5 what we would have Bell and have more money to spend on defense.

Not sure if Bell would be upset if he got the non-exclusive tag and could visit and negotiate with other teams.
Does anyone know if the two first round picks are mandatory or can that be negotiated?

Mike DeCourcy is a college basketball columnist at Sporting News, a position he has held for 20 years. He is a member of the US Basketball Writers Hall of Fame. He also writes frequently about soccer.
Apparently now he is an expert on the Steelers and Football too.

He'll be upset when he finds out that his market value to other teams isn't as high as he thinks it is, a la Jason Worilds.

Jason Worlids retired before he even tested the market. Going into free agency that season, he was the #1 OLB prospect.

Eagles Sports radio was drooling over him and wanted to pick him up.

He did but no one called with the big money he was expecting, if they called at all. Somehow he failed to recognize that he sucked except for one-half of one season, the last year of his rookie contract. If I'm a GM I look at that and say this is a guy who will turn it on in his contract year and be a slacker the rest of the time.

Well it’s good to know you aren’t a GM or talent evaluator, because if you were you would be unemployed. So, stick with your day job.

Not going to happen, Tomlin is here to stay.

Not going to happen, they're working on a new contract which Bell says they're real close on, he wants to sign and stay.

Nailed it! One out of three ain't bad.

At the pro bowl Ben seems excited to play again with Fitchner running the offense. He has a new attitude about him.
Also went to bat for Tomlin, defending his coach from all the recent criticism.

It was well known, too that he was considering leaving football, apparently, which would have hindered any offers. Paul ******* Kruger got paid and had very similar stats to Worilds up to that point. Had 11 sacks 2 years after the contract was signed and, I think, is out of football 5 years after contract signed. Wiki doesnt say cut by the Saints, but doesnt show 2017 stats either.

Only one year in double digits. 5 years/$40m. never double digit sacks before that, one year double digit after.

Interesting. Do you have a link to his comments? Thx

Roethlisberger Defends Tomlin From Lack Of Discipline Claims While At Pro Bowl

You won't need to wait long for a response from Tomlin-haters:

- Ben's just saying that cause Rooney put pressure on him to do so
- Ben actually hates Tomlin and is going out of his way to straight-up lie to the media
- Tomlin slipped him $100 bucks to say nice things about him
- and on and on...

Its academic but that isnt true... you are thinking of a team siging a non exclusive franchise player to a tender... that is the only place that rule applies... franchised players that aren't signing can have their rights be traded for anything...

https://nfllabor.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/collective-bargaining-agreement-2011-2020.pdf

This is the current cba. Under the same terminology in reference to the franchise player the Packers traded a franchised player in 2008 for a second round pick...

Again, if you made Bell non exclusive then a team needs its own two first rounders to offer him a tender, but trading rights is totally unrestricted for the team holding them...
