I will start off by saying that Mike has been able to communicate with the players in ways that get some free agents to come here, whom otherwise may not have. No, i do not have specific examples, but some players have said they want to play for Mike or that he was the reason they came here.
Obviously to increase the number of wins (by one) on their career marks.
Mike came here billed as some up and coming defensive genius. we were told that he'd keep LeBeau on to learn from and inject his own defensive philosophies, thus making Blitzburgh even more detailed, intricate and dramatic. I've not seen that happen since LeBeau left.
Offensively, Mike inherited talent that included a first ballot HOF QB, a HOF WR and a very, very good RB who could drive defensive coordinators crazy. Sure, the OL was patched up along the way with bandaids and gauze, and that should have been addressed more. Though some of that likely falls on the slumped shoulders of Kevin Colbert. I'd also lean to the idea that maybe Ben was so good at doing what he did that he didn't think they needed to invest premium picks in the OL (but that's just my opinion).
Since Ben retired, there's been a premium paid to the defense. Ben retired 2022. That next draft, we took Kenny Pickett. In a draft that was said to have lackluster QB talent, we took a QB in R1. Most likely due to not wanting to miss out another Pitt QB who went on to have a highly successful career in the NFL, but wasn't of the same talent level as Marino.
Due to that, we shot ourselves in the foot and missed out on a shut down CB in Trent McDuffie (taken the next pick), and an All-Pro OL in Tyler Smith taken two picks later. As always, though, hindsight is 20/20. I mean, we were also flirting with Malik Willis (who was exhibiting strong character traits we tend to swoon over). But that draft shows a lot about how we are today.
Pickett - Raiders backup QB currently showing a journeyman career arc
Pickens - traded this off-season and is blossoming under a dynamic offense
Leal - bouncing on and off PS currently
CA3 - a guy who should be a slot receiver is our #2 WR at times
Co Heyward - drafted on name recognition, and makes some good plays and some bonehead plays
Mark Robinson - made the roster, then was cut and is back I guess
Oladokun - cut and is now collecting a check from the Chiefs PS
Pickens is the only noteworthy addition, and that is due to him playing elsewhere. the rest are JAGs.
The 2023 draft was Khan and Tomlin's baby. Decent enough thus far with Broderick Jones showing growth signs at LT, JPJ collecting yellow hankies. Benton's decent. Darnell is finally progressing, but our offense doesn't give him enough opportunites. Herbig is coming along... Trice needs to find a new career and Spencer Anderson is producing.
2024 brought in Fautanu, our next decades long center in Frazier, two Wilsons (one is decent, the other is a ghost), McCormick and a DL whom many have forgotten as well as a guy who's career has unfortunately ended (Watts).
Thus - two drafts with Tomlin and Khan controlling the direction of the team. And here we are ... just keeping our eyebrows above water. I will suggest the roster is insanely talented... but is being absolutely wasted with **** defensive schemes and a reigned in offense.
THAT is Tomlin's responsibility. He's getting the guys he needs or wants, but is again failing to do anything with them.
Mike will refuse to see the neon gold writing on the wall and continue to bash his head against it.
Time for Mike to go was last season, when we could have brought in Ben Johnson. The same guy Mike lost to Sunday, who was able to make halftime adjustments to Mike's schemes and "philosophy".
