Here is a comparison between the stats of two QBs that came in relief for an injured starter and then their first full game as the starter the following week :
Player A
12 of 20, 176 yards, 2 TDs, 2 INTs, 2 Sacks, 0 rush yards, 82.5 QB rating
12 of 22, 163 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, 1 Sack, 2 rush yards, 74.6 QB rating
Player B
12 of 19, 112 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT, 0 Sacks, 7 rush yards, 92.4 QB rating
14 of 27, 174 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT, 2 Sacks, 15 rush yards, 81.4 QB rating
Player A being Ben and Player B being Mason.
It's unfair to compare Mason today to the totality of Ben's career.
Ben's final stat line for 2004 was :
66.4 Comp %
2,621 yards
17 TDs
11 INTs
30 Sacks
98.1 QB Rating
144 Rush Yards
We have a 1 1/2 game sample of Mason. We should not be crowning him nor shredding him. Let's see how he finishes the year and judge him by that.
What we do have a large sample size of is this coaching staff.
Our O-Line looked downright over-matched and weak ( Munch may have been our biggest loss so far this year ).
But our offensive playcalling was downright TERRIBLE, from start to finish yesterday.
BA - ROO - TALL!!!!!!!!!!!!
We once again abandoned the run way too early yesterday ( maybe because our O-Line was getting worked like an 8 hour day ).
We made zero adjustments.
Our coaching staff doesn't realize Mason isn't Ben.
We can't pin that loss on Mason at all.
The coaching staff didn't give Mason carte blanche to call his own plays/audible out/make adjustments.
He was told to run what was called and be an obedient robot and we saw the results of that brain trust scheming.
Our D made plays yesterday for 3 quarters and became gassed because our O couldn't sustain drives.
For once our D showed up and O decides to crap the bed.
It sucks, but I'm not putting that on Rudolph.
The fact that he came out and took the blame when it CLEARLY is on Tomlin and the coaches says how mature this kid is.
Do I think he's the next coming? Nope. Not yet.
Do I think he's Landry Jones or Kordell Stewart? Nope. Not yet.
We're being more critical because we're now 0-3 and Rudolph lost his first game.
That's more of a testament to who the Steelers were in 2004 vs who they are today.
FIVE, 1-2-3-4-FIVE turnovers and you lose?!?!??!?!
THAT is coaching, people. NOT the players.
