Mason Rudolph

Here is a comparison between the stats of two QBs that came in relief for an injured starter and then their first full game as the starter the following week :

Player A
12 of 20, 176 yards, 2 TDs, 2 INTs, 2 Sacks, 0 rush yards, 82.5 QB rating
12 of 22, 163 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, 1 Sack, 2 rush yards, 74.6 QB rating

Player B
12 of 19, 112 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT, 0 Sacks, 7 rush yards, 92.4 QB rating
14 of 27, 174 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT, 2 Sacks, 15 rush yards, 81.4 QB rating

Player A being Ben and Player B being Mason.
It's unfair to compare Mason today to the totality of Ben's career.
Ben's final stat line for 2004 was :
66.4 Comp %
2,621 yards
17 TDs
11 INTs
30 Sacks
98.1 QB Rating
144 Rush Yards

We have a 1 1/2 game sample of Mason. We should not be crowning him nor shredding him. Let's see how he finishes the year and judge him by that.

What we do have a large sample size of is this coaching staff.
Our O-Line looked downright over-matched and weak ( Munch may have been our biggest loss so far this year ).
But our offensive playcalling was downright TERRIBLE, from start to finish yesterday.
BA - ROO - TALL!!!!!!!!!!!!
We once again abandoned the run way too early yesterday ( maybe because our O-Line was getting worked like an 8 hour day ).
We made zero adjustments.
Our coaching staff doesn't realize Mason isn't Ben.
We can't pin that loss on Mason at all.
The coaching staff didn't give Mason carte blanche to call his own plays/audible out/make adjustments.
He was told to run what was called and be an obedient robot and we saw the results of that brain trust scheming.

Our D made plays yesterday for 3 quarters and became gassed because our O couldn't sustain drives.
For once our D showed up and O decides to crap the bed.
It sucks, but I'm not putting that on Rudolph.
The fact that he came out and took the blame when it CLEARLY is on Tomlin and the coaches says how mature this kid is.

Do I think he's the next coming? Nope. Not yet.
Do I think he's Landry Jones or Kordell Stewart? Nope. Not yet.
We're being more critical because we're now 0-3 and Rudolph lost his first game.
That's more of a testament to who the Steelers were in 2004 vs who they are today.
FIVE, 1-2-3-4-FIVE turnovers and you lose?!?!??!?!
THAT is coaching, people. NOT the players.

fedderone, thanks for a great post. I stated during the week that the coaching needed to step up. They didn't so this is what we got. Will the coaching step up next week? Week after? Until they step up we can expect valiant effort from the players but soon, they too will regress.

Salute the nation

No no. JuJu had to move his hands slightly so it’s not perfect. Apparently it was a terrible throw that JuJu made an incredible play to catch a ball that hit him in the facemask while he was running in stride.

Lol so not a perfect pass means terrible now.. sorry, that is not a perfect pass. My QB standards must be a little high. Like I said, atleast he got the ball to Juju.

The pass could not have been better. Literally, it could NOT have been located better. For some reason, Juju seemed not to find the ball until it was on his facemask. If he sees it a tick earlier, as he should have done, he reaches out and snags it, right in front of him, chin high. A perfect freaking pass.

To me, in stride means out in front of him so his arms can extend and catch. On a crossing route, the ball should be out in front to lead the WR. On a comeback or hook route, to his face mask is better placement. JMO.

Oh, bull. A perfect pass would have been 1/2 yard ahead of JuJu at chest height. Regardless, it was a good throw, and definitely one of the three good passes Rudolph threw yesterday. 2 of them resulted in TDs, the other one lead to the DB tackling Washington rather than giving up the TD.

There's no reason to bash Rudolph. He played about as well as we could have expected in his first game. San Francisco's defense is good. And yesterday they played the line of scrimmage daring Rudy to go over the top and the play calling didn't really take advantage of that until the 2nd half.

Sure, Rudy missed a couple throws to Vance. Ben missed throws as well. Anyone expecting Rudy to put up spectacular numbers was kidding himself. However, piling on Roethlisberger for not playing well in the first two games with an arm that either needed surgery or was one throw away from needing surgery is a douche move.

In his first game, Rudy didn't fare too well on the eyeball test. I don't know about you guys but there was no point in the game when a 3rd down came up and I felt there was any real hope of them converting. You could just feel that every single thing they were trying to do was monumentally hard. I expect it will get better, but the fact is, it's going to be a loooooooong season.

Buckle in and love your Steelers win or lose.

What have they got to lose?

Uh... I think you're forgetting the absofuckinglutely necessary 8-8 record?

The good news for us fans is, they only have 13 games to win at least 8. Every single week the 2nd half of the season gets more and more exciting!

Anyone down on Rudolph or calling him not starting caliber is a complete idiot. Just the same as anyone calling him a franchise QB. He is somewhere in between there right now. We won't know who he really is until he finishes this season and, in all reality, starts his next season as a starter. So, sit back and enjoy (or hate) the ride.

Coach, just curious as to why you have such a problem with Rudolph. Does he owe you money or something

Did you see the first half? Maybe the coaching is that bad and figured out later that his best stuff is the deep ball.

Hers my issue. By all accounts Rudolph is smart and a hard worker. Okay so why are rookies easily outshining him and 2nd year making their mark when he is not?

I get he’s a new starter. I think he has issues and is not good at beating the blitz and is fumble prone. Does not look like Ben’s long term successor.

Well ya see, the books say QBs with the first name of Mason never pan out. Second, his haircut it not streamlined correctly to deflect incoming pass rushers, and lastly. ...he kinda looks like Crosby. Can’t have two baby faced leaders in the burg. Yup. That’s what the coach books say.

;-)

I'm curious what you didn't like about our offense the past few years? We were top 5 in yardage and top 5 and top 10 in scoring the past 2 seasons. Maybe our older, set in his ways QB could have thrown for 6000 yards last season and you would have been happy.

If we had any kind of coaching staff that could have put even a half *** defense on the field we could have easily had a couple of more Lombardis in the showcase. But it looks like that ship has sailed. Especially if Tomlin is back next year.

I didn't like the fact that with all those stats, they didn't win a damn thing. I don't give a **** about stats.

Football is a team sport. Your second point is all speculation, which means nothing.

In the event, I not quite sure your issue with what I said. I was admitting the error in my thinking, especially after what these brilliant coaches rolled out yesterday.

So basically, you didn't like our defense, that gave up 5 4th quarter leads?
