Report: Martavis Bryant To Coach High School Receivers During Suspension

StockBryant3

BY DAVE BRYAN JULY 28, 2016 AT 06:06 PM
While the Pittsburgh Steelers were busy Thursday afternoon reporting to Saint Vincent College in Latrobe for the start of training camp, suspended wide receiver Martavis Bryant is reportedly preparing himself to report to a yet to be named high school in Nevada.

According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com, Bryant, who will miss the entire 2016 season due to him once again violating the league’s substance abuse policy, will spend the year in Henderson, Nevada, training and volunteering with a high school football team. Henderson, in case you didn’t know, is on the outskirts of Las Vegas.

“He’s as focused as I’ve seen him in a while,” Santanello said, according to Fowler’s report. “He’s keeping very busy. He enjoys working with kids.”

According to Bryant’s agent, Thomas Santanello, the Steelers former fourth-round draft pick out of Clemson will help coach high school receivers while in Nevada in addition to training five days a week at Van Hook Sports Performance.

“He’s doing great,” Bryant’s other agent Brian Fettner said earlier this week, according to Tom Pelissero of USA Today. “He’s taking everything seriously and living with his trainer, half a mile from his agent, surrounded by the right people. He’s heartbroken that he’s not allowed to play, but we are where we are and he’s focused to not let it happen again.”

Bryant has a long road to travel in order to get himself reinstated by the league, which could ultimately happen around this same time next year along as he keeps himself clean and out of trouble. At least he has recent evidence that it’s worth him walking a straight and narrow path over the course of the next year.

Earlier this week, Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon was reinstated on a conditional basis from his indefinite suspension for multiple drug violations by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. He will, however, be suspended for the first four games of the 2016 season. Gordon was previously suspended two games in 2013, 10 games in 2014 and for the entire 2015 season for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy.

One tiny slip by Bryant will likely result in his suspension being extended, so it’s very important that he keeps himself surrounded by people that have his best interest in mind.

I hope it works out. Very important to surround yourself with people who will keep you on the straight and narrow if you have a problem rather than the same people you are normally surrounded with.

I'll have to think this thing through more, but is this the guy you want as a role model for high school athletes?

I get this. If he isn't an NFL player, does he have any chance at a high school coaching job with his recent problems? Absolutely not. However, it is a great way to help with the rehab process and also maybe keep some kids focused.

Other then smoking what has he done?? It's not like he is Johnny Manziel. He is a quiet guy.

That is true. But some on ESPN were whining that someone who has recently F'd up again with drugs shouldn't be working with kids. <shrugs shoulders>

I was thinking the same as I was reading the article. OTOH, he is an example of how NOT to behave if you want to make those big $$. he could wear a shirt that says "**** up and you end up coaching snot nosed, self absorbed teenagers the rest of your life rather than making millions of dollars a year to play a game."</shrugs>

Wont make me feel any better when he is not on the field the whole 2016 season.

Heartbroken that he’s not allowed to play?

Cry me a river......

Right? Nothing wrong with pot. Do it on their time, be responsible players in the NFL and everyone is happy. I don't understand the drama behind a few puffs. It's not like the guy killed anyone. I'd welcome Martavis back in a heart beat. Like I said with Bell and I'll say this with Martavis. They have maturity issues. Coming from my generation as well, maybe they feel guilty and try to find someone to blame until it catches up to them

I think Bryant may have had real mental issues, besides the weed, which probably helped him cope, it just happens that he's an NFL player, and it didn't mix well.

Bell, on the other hand, is just an arrogant dumbass.

meh, it's just entertainment

I'm praying for Marty, personally...not just for his return to the team; but, for an honest and complete rehabilitation on his personal life. Everything else, after that, will and should fall into place...

I have no problem with anything Ben said for the record. Bryant needs to start acting like a man, instead of a butthurt little puppy.

You screwed up now man up and own it.

If this guy has had issues for awhile, all he may know is talking a good game to get out of trouble. As USDA alluded to, Bryant has something else going on from Bell and I agree. He's pretty lucky that he's in the NFL and has the resources to turn things around, up to him to take advantage of it.

He isn't on Crack. In most industries and professions including possibly your physician his weed smoking is irrelevant. He wouldn't need to "turn around" his life because it would be a non issue.

Ben Writes Off Lyin' Martavius.

Read the article, writing off is maybe a stretch. Certainly, very disappointing with the help and guidance he feels he gave Bryant and justifiably so. I'm going to assume one or both him and Bell will not be Steelers next year, but hoping that both can get their **** together.

I wouldn't look for Bryant to be back. Bell yes, if he'll play for the lowball offer with incentives the team will give him (he probably won't) or if he gets hurt again then no. I don't know that another team will give him top five RB money when he tends to fail drug tests.

Oh, I didn't realize that his NFL career wasn't in jeopardy and he'd be on the field this year. My mistake.

I don't disagree with you that his career is in jeopardy. Clearly it is. But you making it sound like he is lucky that he has the NFL to help him is beyond a reach. Your neighbor, your kids teacher, your (fill in the blank), might well smoke weed. It is a non issue in their life. This whole ****** thing with Bryant and Bell in one way is disappointing, I get that. But some of these responses are beyond hypocritical. Ben, you feel let down by Bryant and he didn't tell the truth. REALLY. What a short memory you have friend. Seems to my recollection, you had substance abuse issues that caused this team a far greater black eye than Martavis Bryant.

He is lucky he has an organization that has been willing to support him to try to get him back on the field. Not every career option gives you a second, third, fourth, etc. chance if you break the rules. Not sure what Ben's ordeals have to do with anything. He messed up, he turned things around (although, by your standards he may not have needed to turn his life around) and is a team leader. Nothing wrong with expecting more from your teammates even if you were suspended.

So you don't see where a guy who had a drinking problem, who was accused twice of Sexual assaults (and regardless of his guilt or innocence in those cases at minimum used horrific judgement in both) maybe shouldn't be making judgements about how others conduct themselves. Here is what Ben should have had to say to a question he knew was coming:
I don't want to speculate on Le'veons situation. He is in the appeals process and we hope to have him week one. As far as Martavis, that is very unfortunate. I'm more concerned about Martavis the person than as a team mate. I've tried to offer him support, but in the end he needs to make decisions that are more in his best interest and that of the team.

Ben wanted to get laid... I have been with many of crazy women. They lie, flat out make up **** to get what they want. And I didn't have Ben's crazy amount of money in my bank account.

Was it a drinking problem or did he just party a lot?

Regardless he has his head on straight, and Bryant flat out lied to him. Nothing wrong with being disappointed with that.

Especially seeing how Martavis couldn't even pick up a phone when he reached out to him.
