Martavis update

He is lucky he has an organization that has been willing to support him to try to get him back on the field. Not every career option gives you a second, third, fourth, etc. chance if you break the rules. Not sure what Ben's ordeals have to do with anything. He messed up, he turned things around (although, by your standards he may not have needed to turn his life around) and is a team leader. Nothing wrong with expecting more from your teammates even if you were suspended.

That's not why he's lucky; he is lucky because he was born with insane physical skills or the Steelers would never "stand by him" to begin with.

So you don't see where a guy who had a drinking problem, who was accused twice of Sexual assaults (and regardless of his guilt or innocence in those cases at minimum used horrific judgement in both) maybe shouldn't be making judgements about how others conduct themselves. Here is what Ben should have had to say to a question he knew was coming:
I don't want to speculate on Le'veons situation. He is in the appeals process and we hope to have him week one. As far as Martavis, that is very unfortunate. I'm more concerned about Martavis the person than as a team mate. I've tried to offer him support, but in the end he needs to make decisions that are more in his best interest and that of the team.

No, I don't think he needs to say that. He's been through it, he's learned from it and can say whatever he pleases. Much more of an impact to hear some forceful words from the quarterback than the outrage of fans on Twitter or a message board.

That's not why he's lucky; he is lucky because he was born with insane physical skills or the Steelers would never "stand by him" to begin with.

Either way it's football related.

Ben wanted to get laid... I have been with many of crazy women. They lie, flat out make up **** to get what they want. And I didn't have Ben's crazy amount of money in my bank account.

Was it a drinking problem or did he just party a lot?

Regardless he has his head on straight, and Bryant flat out lied to him. Nothing wrong with being disappointed with that.

Especially seeing how Martavis couldn't even pick up a phone when he reached out to him.
Whether he was guilty (which he very well could have been) or not (I tend to think). He exercised brutal judgement and was on a downward spiral. He looked like a ****** idiot in the days that followed the incident. And yes he has made a terrific rehabilitation of his image. But you don't have to involve yourself in other people's problems.
I've always believed this about Ben's incident. The first woman more likely than not was crazy ***. The second one should be off limits to be put into any criticism. That could have been a lot of people's daughter. She didn't pursue the matter and either by cash (which really looks bad for him) or by just wanting it to go away. She has never publicly went to any detail as to what happened. I will never judge her in any way. Which brings us to the term judging.
People who live in glass houses. I didn't see any other players including Brown who is the undisputed leader of that group offering up his sage advice and he has had an impeccable reputation so far.

Because 1) she was probably too drunk to remember and 2) her friends who did remember knew they chased Ben and his crowd from bar to bar wearing DTF (down to ****) stickers. Would have been thrown out of court in an hour. Doesn't excuse Ben for not being smarter but...no...charges...filed.

Ron it wouldn't have been about charges. It would have been about $. We both know that. So either he paid her or she was pretty honorable / didnt want the drag through the mud.

I never heard anything about her being paid off. I think she just didn't want the embarrassment of going to court when it was unlikely she'd win a civil suit when the DA didn't see enough evidence to bring charges.

That was never going to court for civil suit. Again Ron you are a much smarter man than that. He was settling. He likely settled quietly. The dissapearance of the surveilance video was pretty ****** bad in that deal. A civil suit is a completely different animal than criminal court. There is a whole separate set of rules there. He settled at some level with crazy *****. Could have favored him or her. You don't know. However, rightly or wrongly, her claim really would have hurt him in court in the second incident.

My oldest daughter used to teach Science at a high school in Henderson. I wonder if its the same high school?
Henderson is a decent area, even though basically a suburb of "Sin City".... and the sports complex mentioned is a nice set-up.

I also have some reservations about him being invited to assist with high school kids...I can see him helping out at a college or junior college, but with 16-19 year olds?

Just saying..

Might be different if he had his **** together. But the timing is odd, as he is going through these issues right here and now.

What is the discussion?

Don't screw up and break the rules. Like I am doing presently?

Well I guess he could be sitting in his basement instead. That would really be productive. Don't really understand some of your logic. I don't buy into these feel good stories much, but with any opportunity to have the guy help this team in the future, I'm not against it. Am I skeptical. Yes. Very much so. He is working out, he is helping youth. He isn't a child pornographer. What exactly would make you all happy. Cut him and watch him sign with the Bengals and rip the **** out of the Steelers next year. That would satisfy you? Great logic.

We can't sit on our hands with players in worry about the Bengals picking them up.

But what would satisfy me is for him to be a man and address his issues. And then attack them.

Attack them by every means possible. And then workout in the mean time.

Because to be honest he really needs to worry about fixing himself first.

His career hangs on that coming to pass.

Not to mention if he is really unstable to the point that he doesn't respond to teammates, etc.

Why would we want that around easily influenced children?

He is better served fixing Martavis, and if you are focusing on something else besides that and working out?

Perhaps he won't fix himself.

And then he is out of the league, and the Steelers are short one deep threat.

Oh the children. The children. Are they your children? Maybe the HC is a ragging alcoholic in his spare time. Is that acceptable to you? Is he supposed to spend his time 24/7 in counseling. How would that go exactly.
Councillor: So Martavis, you really like to smoke marijuana?
Bryant: Yes, since I was 12.
Councillor: Me too.
Some of my best friends and strong acquaintances are smokers. Some of them are more well adjusted people then me.
Just think about this for a second. If he was in contact with the FO and asked if he should do this do you think they would say: A. Yes Martavis, I think it would be good for you to get out and do something positive in a community. Or B. No Martavis, you are a monster and shouldn't be around kids, plus it is taking time away from your recovery (which in most worlds he doesn't need one from). So in summary, the school certainly doesn't have a problem. I'm about 99.5% sure the team doesn't care or thinks it is good. Yet you think it is a problem. OK.

Oh so because they aren't my children who cares? nice angled approach.

You seem to want to minimalize this situation.

Perhaps your friends that are smokers don't have millions of dollars forfeited if they smoke up.

Perhaps they don't have a negative impact on a entire team for breaking the rules.

Perhaps if it takes him 24/7 in counseling to "get it" then yeah whatever it takes.

He isn't just hurting himself, he is hurting the team.

And no matter how you justify it in your head that it isn't a big deal, it is.

On a team that falls just a little short from obtaining their ultimate goal, maybe his absence is the difference, then what?

No big deal then?

Players are payed a decent amount of money, and as a result they are expected to follow the rules. And to be available to their team.

If a player can't then he is of little use to a team that is a play here and there away from something special.

I get it, so whatever it takes for Bryant to "get it" sobeit it.

Two selfish players who need to focus for their team, and stop being a distraction.

I think Bryant obviously needs a kick in the *** before it is too late.

I'm pretty sure the parents of the kids he coaches only care if he helps improve their son's route running and hands catching. They probably don't give a **** about his influence. But if it is a concern "They" can take it up with the school district. Not you or me. I recognize he cost the team. I'm sure he does too. I just see no point in flogging him about it. You want him cut? What would that accomplish? At some point they will have to decide if his unreliability trumps his talent. Now is not that time. I just don't understand why you all get your panties in a bunch about it. There is nothing that can be done.

Is my panties in a bunch or am I just debating a viewpoint? that you obviously don't agree with.

Parents probably don't give a **** about his influence really? I have been around enough parents coaching kids football to know they care just about everything. And can be quite over-reactive. But the bigger point that is getting lost is more about that his time should be spent more on focusing to fix Martavis. You must think that is a over night fix or a easy fix. If it was either for him he would have already accomplished the task or not?

You also keep on harking about cutting him, as if that is what I have been throwing at you in this debate. It wasn't. If it comes to cutting him next year because he couldn't fix himself this year. Too bad for him.

As far as flogging him? whatever the fans bring to him or any other player who can't figure out how to follow the rules comes with the territory.

As a player you get the good and bad reactions.

Nobody is hunting down Martavis and ******** on his lawn. But as fans we damn sure can voice our displeasure over dumbass actions that hinder the team we root for. He recognizes he cost the team does he? Did he the last time as well? yeah that outcome was favorable right? he realized so much that he hindered the team and went out and broke the rules yet again.

When it comes to him it is fair to presume he doesn't get ****.

So here we are

we will have to agree to disagree...

checking

yep my panties they are fine no crumbling, how about yours?

Agree to disagree is really good with me. Opinion like ******** are owned by all. My personal opinion is that I hope for him to get his life together in hopes that he can one day help the team. My belief that the best road map to that is:
1. Treat his depression if that is really a problem for him. I don't believe there is legitimate treatment for weed dependence. However, if the root cause of his dependence is unhappiness there could be real hope for him. It requires work and proper medication (which will probably be much more harsh than the weed by the way).
2. Occupy himself with positive things. Being positive and having a purpose in life tends to keep us away from things that bring us down.
3. Get love and support from friends and family. If he has friends that are a part of the dependency they will have to be eliminated.
I realize that many here can't understand his situation. He has everything but is throwing it away. Ever have an uncle who gambled away his life savings or a relative that drank himself to death. None of this **** is understandable to the well. But what I can tell you with absolute certainty is that tough love, and three strikes and zero tolerance has not, does not and never will work with people like this. That **** keeps the masses in line. The Well.
If when the Steelers want to dump him, they have every right to do so. Uncertainty and unreliability are not good traits in an employee. I just hope the best for the kid. Period.

Everyone hopes the best for the kid.

And yeah I had relatives that were alcoholics, friends that OD'd. Multiple ones unfortunately, one who even took his own life. In a perfect world we would help them all. **** if he can coach and workout and fix himself **** by all means.

But if he finds he can't time manage one of them, hopefully it is the coaching that gets left at the waist-side.

Depression is no joke, and sure treat that whatever. Even if it is to leave football I would be ok with that.

But while he is on the team, I hope for no more fuckups.

And I am sure the Steelers will give him very little wiggle room going forward.

Like one fan mentioned in another thread, in some ways he is no different than Santonio Holmes. His talent level perhaps afforded him some more time.

To still be a Steeler.

But even that has a limit.

good debating with you.............

High school kids have the best connections. My guess is that the parents, assuming they are Steelers fans, are concerned about their children keeping Martavis stocked with the chronic. Maybe one of the parents can loan him their kid's whizzinator.

Right? Nothing wrong with pot. Do it on their time, be responsible players in the NFL and everyone is happy. I don't understand the drama behind a few puffs. It's not like the guy killed anyone. I'd welcome Martavis back in a heart beat. Like I said with Bell and I'll say this with Martavis. They have maturity issues. Coming from my generation as well, maybe they feel guilty and try to find someone to blame until it catches up to them
He broke the law and it's against the rules. If I smoke pot and get caught, I get fired, PERIOD. If I catch or suspect anyone smoking pot, I send them to be drug tested immediately and if positive, they're gone. Why should the rules be different for some hotshot football player?
