Marcus Mariotta

I have not watched film on all the quarterbacks yet in the detail I want but I will say I am sort of leaning towards Winston as my #1 guy and will probably give him a 1A rating. I will probably give Mariotta a 1B or 1C rating.

Excuse me if this sounds too harsh.

If you have not noticed ( and judging by your above comments, you haven't ) Mariota was a running threat in college. To clarify my positon, Mariota rushed for ( 770 yards, 5.7 yards per carry and 15 TD's ) last season. Mariota ran a 4.52 in the forty yard dash. This is faster than Russel Wilson, or Colin Kaperniock! Mariota will be a good running threat in the NFL. Yes it is a factor.

But he's also a very good passer making him a dual threat. Last season Mariota ( 6'4" tall ) completed 68.3% of his passes, 4,454 yards, 42 touchdown passes, and just 4 interceptions. The season before MM only had 31 TD's and just 4 interceptions. This shows a QB who can pass for yards and take care of the football. Very important in the NFL. His character is also excellent.

By contrast last season Jamis Winston threw 25 touch downs and 18 interceptions, and fumbled the ball 7 times. This is the sign of a very mistake prone QB who averages well over a turn over a game. Winston also ran a slow 4.97 40, and has small hands which could be a reason why he's fumble prone. Yet the media pundits think he the #1 pick even though he has enough off the field baggage to fill a 767?

If Del is reading this, I think he would agree with me that Mariota's legs will be a factor in the NFL.

I understand some of what you are saying. A QB who can use his legs is a weapon. I get that. I also understand that Winston had a TON of turnovers last year.

But you are missing the MAIN reason why teams are skeptical of Mariota. He only took 5 snaps under center last year. 5... He also does not make reads at the line of scrimmage and the Oregon offensive is super simplified for QB's to manage.

A QB success will normally determine on his ability to make reads at the line. And his ability to throw before the WR breaks out the route. His ability move past his first read and his second. These are things that all the good QB's can do at the drop of a dime.

Are you confident in Mariotta's ability to do any of the above? And if so- what makes you so confident given his lack of experience?

I don't care for either one. Winston turns the ball over too much and MM is another running QB that is going to "revolutionize" the QB position. I'm glad the Steelers don't need a QB this year.

I am confident in Mariota's arm, accuracy, size, character, athletic ability, and amazing results as a quarterback in college. He can learn how to take a snap and footwork for the 3, 5, 7 step drops. He's behind in this area, but I do not think it a big deal long term. High school QB's lean how to take a snap and drop back. All college QB's need to make adjustment for the NFL. Even Manning and Luck. And a good offensive coordinator calls plays to QB's strengths. As stated MM can use his legs a bit as a rookie while he learns on the job.

Which NFL teams are skeptical of Mairota? He's going in the top six. Either Tampa, Tennessee, or the NY Jets. A trade up to get him is also possible. Tampa has some weapons. A rookie can do well there.

Who would I compare him to? A better version of Colin Kapernick. Better as a passer, and less mistake prone.
