Reports coming out that Patrick Mahomes will sign a 10 year 40 million per contract. Be interesting to see what they will have to pay if he is injured.
Dumb on both sides if you ask me. Joe Flacco obviously isn't Patrick Mahomes, but his contract quickly killed the Rats when his play dropped off. What happens if he injures his shoulder, or something, and can still play, but at a diminished level? On the other side, how will Mahomes take it if the going rate for an elite qb is 50 million six years from now?
I am going to guess that Mahomes will survive and be able to feed his kids.

More than enough money for Mahomes to live on, but he is leaving a ton of money on the table that would've come with his third contract.
Here is an updated look at the numbers. This deal makes more sense for Mahomes...

The #Chiefs and QB Patrick Mahomes have agreed to terms on a 10-year extension worth $503 million, sources tell me and @TomPelissero. He gets $477M in guarantee mechanisms and gives the ability for Mahomes to have outs if the guarantee mechanisms aren’t exercised. Also if you look at the plus ten year contracts that teams have gave out to QBs none of those QBs ended their career with the team that drafted them. Looking at the contract it looks like it is back loaded. So that it is a risky contract no doubt, the team could restructure as they go to lower the hit. Yet again there is no Covid verbiage so if you factor that in...an even bigger risk surfaces. Is he worth on average $42mil per year for the next twelve years........... He will be nearly the only player on the field because it don't matter how good he is but how good the supporting cast is. The Chiefs will lose top tier talent to be able to afford this. I don't see the salary cap continually going up and up and NOT just because of the C-19. I'm glad I didn't have to make that decision. Happy for him and sooner or later the Chiefs will be jettisoning some quality players.

Only a 10 million dollars signing bonus and when you realize garbage like Dac Prescott is getting over 31milluon this year this contract is a bargain. The cap will keep going up and up and these numbers will look like a bargain in 3 years or so.
Here is a list of the top money EARNED via contracts in NFL history, not including endorsements:
1. Eli Manning: $252.3 million
2. Peyton Manning: $248.7 million
3. Drew Brees: $244.7 million
4. Tom Brady: $235.2 million
5. Aaron Rodgers: $233.6 million
6. Ben Roethlisberger: $232.3 million
7. Matt Ryan: $223.5 million
8. Philip Rivers: $218.9 million
9. Matthew Stafford: $211.0 million
10. Larry Fitzgerald: $175.0 million
Amazing the two Manning boys are on the top of that list and some around here think BEN should take a discount.
Mahomes has shattered the contract record and I for one am curious to see how it plays out in terms of maturity of contract and cap space for other players. Will the Chiefs be in cap hell before to long/???
Thanks for putting list together Cope, real good.
