Reports coming out that Patrick Mahomes will sign a 10 year 40 million per contract. Be interesting to see what they will have to pay if he is injured.

Dumb on both sides if you ask me. Joe Flacco obviously isn't Patrick Mahomes, but his contract quickly killed the Rats when his play dropped off. What happens if he injures his shoulder, or something, and can still play, but at a diminished level? On the other side, how will Mahomes take it if the going rate for an elite qb is 50 million six years from now?

I am going to guess that Mahomes will survive and be able to feed his kids.

Any idea what his signing bonus is going to be?

There is only risk on both sides if the guarenteed is low. Which it won't be. The guarenteed will be more than enough to live your life on. And Mahomes doesn't strike me as an idiot. I just think it could create a lot of inflexibility in the contract. You cannot really add years. I'm surprised this is kosher with owners. That sets up a pretty dangerous precedent. I know hockey tried this for a bit and then nixed it. The Islanders still pay for Rick Dipetro.

More than enough money for Mahomes to live on, but he is leaving a ton of money on the table that would've come with his third contract.

Maybe he can afford to marry that girl now.

Here is an updated look at the numbers. This deal makes more sense for Mahomes...

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">The <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/Chiefs?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#Chiefs</a> and QB Patrick Mahomes have agreed to terms on a 10-year extension worth $503 million, sources tell me and <a href="https://twitter.com/TomPelissero?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@TomPelissero</a>. He gets $477M in guarantee mechanisms and gives the ability for Mahomes to have outs if the guarantee mechanisms aren’t exercised. No trade clause</p>— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) <a href="https://twitter.com/RapSheet/status/1280261912568172553?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">July 6, 2020</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

So hypothetically if he say had two years of Andrew Luck Luck and called it a day they would be on the hook for 14 million/year for the remaining 8 years. That's sketchy.

Is he worth on average $42mil per year for the next twelve years........... He will be nearly the only player on the field because it don't matter how good he is but how good the supporting cast is. The Cheifs will lose top tier talent to be able to afford this. I don't see the salary cap continually going up and up and NOT just because of the C-19. I'm glad I didn't have to make that decision. Happy for him and sooner or later the Chiefs will be jettisoning some quality players.

Also if you look at the plus ten year contracts that teams have gave out to QBs none of those QBs ended their career with the team that drafted them. Looking at the contract it looks like it is back loaded. So that it is a risky contract no doubt, the team could restructure as they go to lower the hit. Yet again there is no Covid verbiage so if you factor that in...an even bigger risk surfaces.

He also has endorsement deals. If i was a top tier player i would take a pay cut to have a good team around me. You only need and can spend so much money. I would much rather have better talent around me and be competitive than having to worry about who is protecting me and what scrub wrs i am throwing to

Flacco's contract killed the Rats long before his play dropped off. They had to start waiving other decent players almost immediately, particularly if memory serves the offensive line, and signing cheaper replacements.

Mahomes must have heard about Bobby Bonilla Day on July 1.

A-N-D there is a no trade clause involved as well. So the Chiefs can't trade but possibly cut, but that would retro the cap hit.

Definately a BIG risk on both parties and if for some reason Patric slips in ability, then VERY bad risk.

Only a 10 million dollars signing bonus and when you realize garbage like Dac Prescott is getting over 31milluon this year this contract is a bargain. The cap will keep going up and up and these numbers will look like a bargain in 3 years or so.

10 million dollar signing bonus. Haha. 437 million of it is guarenteed or he can opt out. 147 million is guaranteed for catastrophic injury. WTF would he care about the 10 million signing bonus.

is Chris Jones going to sign now

$42M per year is about 20% of cap.

Yikes.

Great deal for Mahomes, especially if NFL has re-start issues, revenue declines, etc.

If this is a good deal for the Chefs, long term, they will realize in last part of contract, when their aging QB already has $500M in his pocket.....amazing deal in uncertain times.

Here is a list of the top money EARNED via contracts in NFL history, not including endorsements:

1. Eli Manning: $252.3 million
2. Peyton Manning: $248.7 million
3. Drew Brees: $244.7 million
4. Tom Brady: $235.2 million
5. Aaron Rodgers: $233.6 million
6. Ben Roethlisberger: $232.3 million
7. Matt Ryan: $223.5 million
8. Philip Rivers: $218.9 million
9. Matthew Stafford: $211.0 million
10. Larry Fitzgerald: $175.0 million

So essentially Mahomes is injury protected for almost Fitzgerald's total earnings and more than half of what Ben and Brady made. Pretty good deal for him.

Huge contract but in 3 or 4 years it will be a bargain. Top QBs now are getting 38 or so.million a year and going up 10 to 20 percent a year. Hell we are paying that to a 38 year old QB coming off a major injury. Think Mahomes is the rare player worthy of such a contract. He is only 24 so it goes against the huge contracts given to.older players like Flacco etc.

Amazing the two Manning boys are on the top of that list and some around here think BEN should take a discount.

Mahomes has shattered the contract record and I for one am curious to see how it plays out in terms of maturity of contract and cap space for other players. Will the Chiefs be in cap hell before to long/???

Thanks for putting list together Cope, real good.

No worries DIC. Keep in mind, this is REALIZED amounts. Money received from contracts. Mahomes is still at zero until his signing bonus. Then his amount accrues. If he gets hurt badly, the full contract won't be realized.
