Juju deserves elite money? How?

Juju's value will be determined by the market. Unless the Steelers choose the Franchise option. The Steelers "creative" book keeping also known as remortgage has put them in these binds. Juju is the type of player they never put themselves in this situation with. Essentially they have left themselves with three options. 1. Tag 2. Pay him crazy in the couple months between the season and FA. 3. Let him test the market. Essentially, this played out the same with Dupree with his production coming at the end of his time here. Juju should have been locked up last year but they couldn't afford it.

I'd rather have Winston than Darnald and Winston is a FA. We are not giving up draft capital for anyone unless it's an elite move.

NYJ also have Ward as their WR coach and he loves Juju. The only way JuJu will get an elite contract is if the Steelers tag him and someone offers him a contract. Honestly, he is the best chance of us getting draft picks from a tag and trade. High effort, high character, no problems in the locker room, and an asset to your community. You pay this guy, but on our team, we can't commit over $10M a season to him.

You’re assuming the Jets next head coach keeps Ward on his staff.

If Darnold came cheap enough in a trade, he's better than what we have behind Ben. I'd bring him in for a 3rd or 4th rounder. Sit behind and learn from Ben for a year or three and who knows.

Sammy D wouldn’t be the worst acquisition. Hell- he’s playing under Gace so I think his development has not gone the way it should. Removing him from Gace could be beneficial to Darnold (see Ryan Tannehill). I think Darnold is a better option than Rudolph. Especially if Matt Canada were to become the offensive coordinator next year. Darnold and Dobbs are both the types of QBs that would do good under Canada.

Most likely JuJu will be tagged. No one will part with 2 no. 1 picks and JuJu will (hopefully) negotiate a long term to stay. He has marketed himself and trademarked his brand to the Pittsburgh area (a’la Bettis) and is well liked. More importantly, he has the mentality for Steeler football. No “young money” attitude with him. Have fun and win as a team, seems to be his MO.

I don't think there would be enough money for a tag, if he accepts a long term deal that averages 14M per year we should pull the trigger, backloading it for the final 3 years of the contract

Juju has nearly 4k yards and he is 24... thats just insane... he is in that Hines ward/Anquon bouldin mold... he isn’t a highlight reel play waiting to happen, but he can make gamebreaking plays... hes tough, hes productive... he plays all the receiver roles...

He is a magnificent top wr in an ensemble wr corps... he probably isnt the stereotypical #1 wr, but he is a star #2 that can be used in a ton of roles...

Bud’s tag is coming off the books Litos. Plus we have a 5 million cap surplus being rolled over as well. 2021 cap will be renegotiated between the league and NFLPA to be at least what it was in 2020. TJ will be on his 5th year option, and IIRC an extension can be added to a 5th year option. The board captologists can vet me on that.

You can't extend a 5th year option. It is guaranteed though. Watt would need a new contract or would be a FA after year 5. You can work out a cap friendly deal lower than the 5th year option amount for a long term deal, but Watt's deal is going to be QB money.

We are projected at ~19.25M over the cap in 2021 without Buds tag on the books.

https://overthecap.com/salary-cap/pittsburgh-steelers/ and click on the 2021 tab. Tuitt could restructure. It is possible DD is a cap casualty. Yes, I know that might be very unpopular statement. Pouncey as well. Nelson and Hayden will be looked at as well (but not both). Reality, though, is it all hinges on the cap itself and what happens with Ben.

This.

If it were me...Juju is my trade bait to move up for either of these positions:

1. QB
2. RB
3. LT or C

Isn't these numbers all based off the Salary Cap going down to 175 million. I just don't believe it's going to happen. I believe the Cap stays right were it is now.

I did a nice cap situation prediction for next off season a couple of months ago in another thread, assuming the cap stays at 200M still there's little room, it's not just Bud was let go, use that tag money on juju

As of right now the Steelers are NEGATIVE $19,259,219 in cap space for 2021. More problematic, the Cap amount can go down in 2021.

He's not worth tag money The Steelers will likely take a 3rd round comp pick in 2022 for losing him. Might take one for losing Dupree too.

The only thing agreed about the cap for next year is the floor. $175M is the lowest we can go.

I do think it will be above it. I have a hard time thinking the cap will be below this year's amount otherwise, no one gets signed to a big contract next year.

A lot will depend on how much revenues are hurt by the pandemic. Stadium and merchandise revenues have collapsed.

At the end of the day, the owners are businessmen, and they're going to be reluctant to spend a ton after a year like this.

Tv ratings will pay a huge role. Despite everything else taking HUGE ratings losses, the NFL only saw a decrease of 6% at mid point this season. But it's been steadily increasing weekly ever since.

Yeah I know the option can’t be extended, I was alluding to having a new contract signed that doesn’t begin until 2022. Worded the reply awkwardly. I’ll look, but there was a club that used the option and included a new contract beyond the option year. 5th year was guaranteed as was the first two years of the new contract (three years total). Don’t think Pitt would do that but maybe the first year. It’s all just a guess until we get a true cap number for 2021. No doubt, TJ will reset the market.

Yeah, I have to think Ben gets restructured with an extension. That’s the first step. Restructure a couple others, maybe Nelson and Tuitt to free up more space. Most every team will be in dire straights even if the cap remains as is.

Why duplicate Hoot’s post #33 on the numbers? It’s only a couple posts before yours. Still infatuated with yourself it appears.

As communicated several times on this here board, the League and NFLPA will not allow a cap ceiling to be 25 million less than what it is for 2020. If so, teams would be jettison a huge amount of contracts from vets, and the NFLPA as well as the league won’t not want the FA market to be flooded with vested veterans. Losing proposition for both the league and players. The 2021 cap ceiling will be renegotiated, most likely to what it is now. Say that out loud to yourself 10 times so you don’t have to repeat yourself again in another thread.

Yes, they can sign an extension past the 5th year option. I'm not sure how the signing bonus would work on that though, because that would be paid out during his 5th year option, which would be a lot higher than his 5th year cap hit.

I think the Steelers play him under the 5th year, try to resign him after the season, and if they aren't close, you tag him to work out a long term deal.

once they sign a new contract, the old one is void. Terms of the prior contract such as the option year no longer apply. It will all come down to the terms in the new contract. While I know the 5th year is cheaper, it also risks losing him to FA or having to apply the tag. He is a player that you can't let leave and I think they will do everything possible to get a deal done before the first game of his 5th year.

I'm not sure about a new contract for 2021, we're talking about a $10M+ difference. A non exclusive tag would keep Watt from the open market, and give the team time to sign him during his open year (while we use the 5th year on Minkah).

My fantasy team is in negotiations with Ju Ju to play for free.

I think JuJu is making side money on his youtube stuff as well.
I don’t think he’s after the big pay day, he seems to enjoy life and football.

I could be wrong though. Just a thought
