what about late in the game, Arizona has one timeout, it's second down, we are at their 15, we call a pass play that's incomplete that runs 3 seconds off the clock and saves them a timeout. Run on 2nd and 3rd down, we are well in FG range, force them to use their last timeout, then run clock before kicking the FG, leaving Arizona with around 55 secs on the clock, instead they had around 1:45 when they got the ball back.
How about an alternative view. The screen (which is essentially an extended handoff), runner scores and we’re up two scores, as opposed to being up six and leaving the door ajar.
The pass has to be clearly there though, or you take the sack. It’s not a terrible call, but agree you can’t throw an incomplete.
