Jordan Berry missed the call

That is what I said when I posted those reads should be called off at that stage of the game/season.
Having pregame calls set in place is stupid as well, if it involves a fake punt on the Steelers side of the field. I am not sure I like that at any stage of a season.

It has to be the players' fault, because Mike Tomlin is not responsible for anything that goes wrong.

I was actually crediting him for coaching a very solid game before this monumental blunder. Figures. Then he decides to pass the ball (a hopeless call to the short side of the field where three guys were ready to tackle Johnson near the line of scrimmage, even if the ball hadn't been tipped) on 2nd-and-goal instead of running another 40 seconds off the clock.

*sigh*

According to Charlie, Duck’s pass was an option. He can hand off or throw the bubble screen. If there are six in the box, you go with the bubble screen. Duck has to understand the situation and hand it off anyway.

I chalk this up to having a rookie QB who isn’t always going to make the best choice , which is why they try to limit his exposure.

It is ALWAYS something stupid from Tomlin, EVERY GAME

Doesn't matter. A fake should never have been an option in that situation.

Amen to this, it doesn't matter if you have the numbers or not, punt the ball and play defense.

Can someone please explain to me how Danny Smith still has a job?
It’s fairly obvious Tomlin is covering for him...

You really think Danny made the play call there? No way a fake punt is on without MT calling for it. None.

Since it was in the plan all week, Danny should've called it off before the team even went out. Tomlin should have made it clear it was called off as well. You put the blame on Smith because he determines the look the opponent gives you in order to run the fake. Besides, the return game is awful. They have Boswell kick short of the end zone in situations where the other team has a strong return game or when it is simply smarter to kick it deep for a touchback. He was certainly consulted before Tomlin challenged the down punt last week. Smith just isn't very good at coaching our special teams.

Still on coaching.. in that specific situation, you don't give Duck the option. You tell him hand the ball off and for the RB to protect the damn ball. End of story.

You know what i think having heard everyone talk about it now?
I think it was a preset call that they set up for distance and field position and formation, and nobody bothered to waive it off late... I think maybe the protection read it and called it off or maybe it was a misread on berry or whatever... it still falls on the special teams guy to have his guys situationally aware and there is no excuse for that kind of miscue at that point in the game...

It’s not like the dude has a ton of things to be doing at that moment... before that punt team even took the field it should have been explicitly removed from the options...

Tomlin is responsible for coaches who fail... Smith hasn’t had good special teams in a while... if not for that runback his return game all year has been **** and his special teams are good for at least a serious boneheaded flub once a game... calling for fair catches close to the goal line... not knowing rules... all kinds of small nonsense that adds up...

So it was Tomlin who called the fake punt

Coach Tomlin said he called the fake punt. Said it was worked on during the week but team didn't execute it today. Tomlin said he takes all responsibility for it.

Lousy clock management and a really stupid call.

Jeeeeesus, this has been re-hashed many times over in multiple threads, you really had to go an start a new thread? /facepalm

I'm with Tibs on this. It's been 10 hours and this horse has been flogged, beaten and mutilated already. If we had lost because of it, it would be worth bitching incessantly about. We didn't. Listen, I was watching the game with a group of guys and my exact comment at the time was, "That has to be the worst fake punt in NFL history." It was a dumbass call if it was Tomlin's....but do we need 3 threads about it?

for O'l time's sake................................ why the **** else could he still be employed? his "splash" play doesn't out weight his none splash coaching.

Don’t confuse everyone with the facts. My understanding is that the call is on based upon a “look” - not the situation. Most of the team called it off (perhaps because of the situation), which resulted in blown protection. Who know’s, if it wasn’t called off at the line, maybe it would have been successful.

Don't forget the frosting....................... It should have never been called in the first place. If you are insinuating the PUNTING team called the fake based on a look and did not get the HC's approval then not only is it similar to him calling the defense different when BEN is p;laying but also NOT CALLING ST'S PLAY ON TOP OF THAT. Just curious, what does he do exactly, based on this new evidence?

Not disagreeing on the call, just pointing out on how all of you Tomlin Haters get triggered over one play, when the overall coaching performance netted a big win.

Cope, just to be clear I fully achknowledged TOMLIN's coaching to this point and commend him for it. It's his past that still has me cautious.

Of course you do. Charlie gets paid to not blame Tomlin. What's your excuse?

Tomlin should have never given his rookie quarterback any option at that point in the game. Or the punting team, up by 10 in that field position with 8 minutes left.

Kind of a big play, though, wasn't it?

I give the guy credit when he coaches well. It's great that the defense was able to overcome those two ****** calls late in the game; fortunately the Steelers were playing a bad team, and they did indeed get the win. However, the W sure doesn't excuse those mistakes, or give them any reason to be overlooked.

He made two colossal errors. The punt fake was ridiculous and he didn't learn from the clock management gaffe last week. He has a guy in charge of challenges. Can I stand next to him to stop him from doing galacticly dumb ****.

I think the debate has lasted longer than normal because one poster seems to think the HC is without blame. I think it simply is that over anyone being triggered.

what about late in the game, Arizona has one timeout, it's second down, we are at their 15, we call a pass play that's incomplete that runs 3 seconds off the clock and saves them a timeout. Run on 2nd and 3rd down, we are well in FG range, force them to use their last timeout, then run clock before kicking the FG, leaving Arizona with around 55 secs on the clock, instead they had around 1:45 when they got the ball back.
