Joey Porter OUT

Not exactly Peezy's fault they draft a lot of turds.

Have you seen any improvements of those "turds" ??? EXACTLY, a good coach would show improvements even if just turds...................JOEY is gone and I thaNK THOSE RESPONSIBLE.

as long as they draft an OLB in the first 3 rounds I'm ok keeping Dupree on a contract like that, little guaranteed money after the 1st year

I'm not against it either, as long as he's a back up.

Tibs mentioned how it might be a good idea to replace the strength and conditioning coach/crew. I totally agree. I was seeing players sucking wind after just a few plays. Would also help with things like you know TACKLING. Far too many times did they try to knock a guy off his feet rather than wrapping him up.

The last game was infuriating with how many times I saw a guy go high (and I know we've seen it way too many times before). The best tackler on the team (minus probably Cam) has to be Mike Hilton. I rarely see him miss a tackle.

the tackling issue should fall on Tomlin, I know I've heard Hoke on the Fan say when he played under Cowher, they'd go over tackling technique constantly.

Not excusing Tomlin from any responsibility, just noting the CBA has really limited how often they can have contact during practices, OTA's etc. relative to when Cowher was around.

Agreed, but you can still go over technique without going full speed, he'll pay two ex players to come in and demonstrate, they can tackle each other.

Bostic was a pretty good tackler this season

You can work on tackling technique and form without ever having contact. Do you really need contact to teach Shazier not to tackle with the crown of his helmet?

I hope the ex giants coach gets a look Danny should be next to go, a lot re our coverage can be blamed at mt and Colbert just sitting there if they moved 3 spots we would of had William Jackson burns was just the next best on our board according to our lousy zone scheme, Carnell lake right after the draft should our guy was William Jackson. I saw in the last 3 games some 4 man dl sets maybe if we add a edge rusher they can play heward at NG hargrave at 3 T and tuitt at re and a speed rusher at LE. Bostic was a decent fill in but for the new speed are a of offences we need Devin Bush.
Fort is fast but not fast enough just just de in their ocassionly he cant be asked to cover as deep or long as shazier was in this 2-4-5 or 3-2-6.

Porter's dismissal most likely comes from Art as a part of cleaning up the culture in the locker room. Let's face it, Joey still thinks he's playing and acts like an ***. Add in the fact that he hasn't developed any talent and his dismissal is a no-brainer.

Yes, the culture needs fixed. So does the defensive play on the field.. there better be other moves.

Now what do we make of Bud Dupree? Can a new coach do something with him? He has been the most frustrating for me on this entire defense.

Bostic, V. Williams - sure they get burned but it's largely because physically they lack the athletic ability and speed to do what is asked of them. It's not so much coaching or grasping the assignment, they just can't handle the assignment due to physical limitations.

Dupree has everything we would want in drafting a new OLB. 6-4, 269 is ideal size for a 3-4 OLB. For his size, he is fast. The guy can run for a 270 pound human. Does he stink in coverage? Yes, but he never played in coverage until he came to Pittsburgh. At Kentucky, he was a DE pass rusher. He was only asked to start covering receivers after getting to the highest level of football on the planet. We've done this before, many times before. How many guys who strictly played DE in college have successfully changed their game to add coverage skills for the first time after hitting the NFL? That's a tall order for anyone to do with no experience, no instincts, no history with concepts or technique. I can imagine a spinning head and blown assignments come quite easily. Maybe we should start drafting more Linebackers who have actually played Linebacker prior to becoming a pro. The transition would have to be easier and more effective.

So, can all that athletic ability within Dupree be re-channeled into an effective OLB opposite Watt (who played both DE and OLB at Wisconsin)? If so, that would add quite a lot to our pass rush. But it's a blind question now with no OLB coach and no way to know anytime soon. Dupree is a great athlete at that size. He just isn't a great football player.

That's a waste too, the guy sucks in coverage, sucks vs the run, and has a hard time tackling a QB when he's got a clear shot at him. Time to move on from another wasted first round defensive pick.

I don't know about a "waste". You have to look at what kind of production that others got out of their $5m linebackers over the last year. That is a little hard to determine because many of those were at the end of a deal signed a while back or at/near the end of a rookie contract.

If he is going to be your starter, $5m is fine. As a back up, it is too much. If he ain't gonna be your starter, you have to determine how much you are going to spend versus how much more production you will get. What, realistically, will that be? Based upon what I have seen go to averageish guys I the past, I'd say nothing less than $10m/year.

So, if you don't sign Bud, but do get a starter for $7m/year, is he, really, $2m better or would it be better to be give Bud the $5m to start and add that $2m/year to get a better FA CB acquisition?

Not that there aren't some available and can be had for $5m, but we've seen some pretty normal edge people get thrown lots of cash so what you got for $5m a few years ago, ain't near what you get now. Sporttrac lists a lot of Edge players that are under $10m

As an example, Clowney's average has been around $5m, but that was less than $700k for 4 years and $12m+ last year.

He didn't even have a position coach at Kentucky, IIRC.

In any event, whoever has been trying to teach him something has been, mostly, a failure. He was getting better at run containment at the end of the year. We don't know if it was a) the teacher, b) the student or c) combination thereof. Some people here think Bud is as dumb as a box of rocks, barely smarter than Supe or Coolie.

WJack III was to be our pick, Cincinnati grabbed him the pick before. They had no need for a another CB as they already had 3 starter caliber players on the roster. No one expected it, not even the players. Steelers were in the Cinci FO heads. It’s taken a couple years but WJIII has become a solid player.

Its about time, Porter was long over do to be let go, Who did he ever develop?

I'm not feeling confidant that Butler will go though. I would have thought he would have been the first to go. Danny Boy should also go.
Agree. Unless they fire every other defensive and special teams coach except for possibly Tom Bradley since he just got here, it’s just rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

I'm sure they can find another Lb coach that will help Williams cover a 5'11 175 lbs. WR that runs a 4.45.

I guess it depends on how it was approached. Healthy competition between the 2 groups should make both better .

Like, "look guys, the offense put up 21 points in the first half. You gave up 28. You going to let them outplay you like that?

I think they sort of pulled a Troy Edwards there and reached on Burns instead of going the best player available next they went with the best available corner next.

I think we can all guess the answer to that. It wasn't done in the way you describe, a la 'healthy competition.' If so, Joey would probably still have a job, if for no other reason than the numbers TJ Watt put up these past two years.

Little tiring seeing these players secretly talk so much. Either own it or STFU.

Did you see any improvement in DHB his entire time with the Steelers?? No. Fire the WR coach?? No. Why? Because he is a turd of a receiver. The best coach can't polish a turd.

I'm not suggesting Porter is a great coach, but letting him go isn't going to solve the OLB problem and certainly not the defense as a whole.

Hiring James Harrison to replace him?

:drum::

I like that idea. This team lacks discipline and I think Harrison would require it. But I don't know if he has stepped on any toes in the Burgh. Management wouldn't like that.

yeah so they fire porter. Must be porters fault Bud sucks dick. Here is your new contract Mr. Long way around.
