Jason Worilds retiring

  • Thread starter Thread starter Idioteque
  • Start date Start date
This is just validation that this kid never had his heart into the NFL! He never, never ever put forth an effort worthy enough to even wear a Steelers uniform! DISGRACEFUL!!!

GO BUTTSLAM ALLAH!!!

More to life then football. Good luck young man.

Not much more to life than financial security for you and the next generation though....

Stupid decision in my book.

This may to speak to why Worilds' best play came in 2013, prior to him being paid robustly, and why his play proceeded to fall off again last season.

The guy's heart was only in it enough for him to inflate his bank account, and once he achieved that to his satisfaction, he checked out.
That's how I see it too. In four years the guy played one half of one season real well, otherwise he was not exceptional. Probably a lot of teams looked at that before they made him an offer if they made offers at all.

For him, $3 to $5 million is not low ball. Maybe in his eyes but that is about right. He is not worth the $8 million plus he wanted. If he wants to come back for $4 to $5 million per, then I'd sign him but not more than that.

he was decent while half-assing.
imagine how good he could be had he put forth 100%?

I found this Yahoo title for an article very humorous.......Coveted free agent OLB Worilds retires at 27

Coveted???

Clearly he has no heart to compete. Another failed Tomlin draft pick.

He might as well retired last year. I think this is a direct result in him believing he was worth X amount of money a year. Colbert offering too much to begin with and then tagging him making him sure he was worth X amount a year. And then this year when he hit the open market the reality was he was never worth even the offer Colbert made him. From all reports Worilds had zero interest from other teams. At this point I think the ownership should take note on recent signings and attempts/failures of Colbert. I would have him and Tomlin on a short leash this year.

I believe the present max tax rate is 48 percent, figure in agents fees and his mandatory contribution to nfl retirement and most players are likely to get less than 1/2 of what they are paid to do with what they want. If one figures the kid could live to be 80 years of age and he is 27 now he needs 53 years worth of income. Figure he has 4 million from last year. If he just banks his money and takes out a "salary so that his money will last till he is 80 he can spend $75,471.69 every year. That does not include any interest he would earn. Since the taxes have already been paid that is after tax money and is likely the equivalent of a taxable 100,000.00 per year salary. How many of you would like to retire on a bit over 6,000.00 per month for the rest of your life at the age of 27.
Sounds like a great plan. He is no longer at the same risk he was for a major injury, sounds like great planning on his part. He might just be one of the smarter guys wearing a uniform in the game today.

I don't blame him at all. He's banked a good 20+ million dollars give or take and most likely won't end up post football like Mike Webster or Junior Seau. Good for him.

Got smacked in the face with reality. I'm not sure who lead him to believe he was worth mega money but it just wasn't true... now he takes his ball and goes home.

Enjoy your retirement *****.

This is no real loss. We figured that we'd lose his mediocre talent to free agency anyway. My question is do we still get a comp pick for him like we would have if he had signed a big contract elsewhere? Anyone?

Nevertheless, I think he'll be back. He'll un-retire by August 1st. He will think about his decision, miss the game, and come roaring back for some team with 2 sacks this year.

no other team ...no comp pick

BOOM........There it is.........Art Tombert should be on the short leash.

Two sources (Jason LaCanfora, Yahoo Sports) claiming it. They say that like Willis he's undergone some religious thing and is stepping away.

Good Lord!

I feel like he quit on us. Hindsight is a bit@h. I wanted Sean Lee that year. Lee's often hurt ( but great when healthy ), but at least he's still playing in the NFL.

If Woridls stays retired, it will cost the steelers a projected 3rd or 4th compensatory draft pick in the 2016 NFL draft.

Why keep playing if your heart isn't in it?? Why take the money and mess up some teams salary cap by playing half ***. He made a ton of money if he invests that right he and his family should be set. No need to to keep playing and risk bodily harm for money if you're not truly committed.

I did not want Worilds back, but I am disgusted beyond belief at the lack of heart some of our recent high round draft picks have exhibited.

It is no wonder why we have not won a playoff game in 4 years.

and I don't blame the player, I blame management.

What makes you think its got to do with dedication and heart ? Players from the past like McMahon, Seau, Watters etc deal or dealt with concussion issues that affected their lives severely after their careers. MJD just left the game a few weeks back...........Jake Locker ...........perhaps these players are more diversified in their skillset and wish to have the ability after their careers to LEAD NORMAL lives and not rely on instructions on how to get back home written on paper.

Worilds is walkin away from close to 400K/game............where is he gonna get that kinda coin in the corporate world ? If he wants to do something other than football thats his choice. I respect that....if the passion isnt there then i dont wanna throw money at a guy whose heart isnt in it.

How do you blame management for this ?

it's a personnal choice. You can blame the F.O. for tagging him last season but that's it, they can't be blamed for his retirement

It's laughable that some on here take Worilds' retirement personally like he was still a member of the Steelers.
Point: He was a free agent that in all likelihood wasn't coming back to the Steelers even if he had not retired.
Point: His agent was telling teams during the "legal tampering" period that Worilds was unsure about his football future (i.e. if he would play). One can imagine that this led to no hard offers and his not even scheduling any visits.
Point: the only thing that the Steelers lose is a comp pick. I know this is a big deal, but look at it as if he had received a career ending injury while on the roster (except there is no cap hit).
Point: He actually did the Steelers and other teams a favor by letting them know during the legal tampering period that he was unsure if he would continue playing. He could have taken a nice signing bonus and retired a couple or three years into the contract, leaving the team that signed him with a nice large cap hit.

Would have been ok with this last point if it got us a 3rd or 4th round comp pick. Now we get squat. Kind of bummed he didn't sign a nice deal elsewhere. It is what it is now

Neither you nor I would have been OK with that last point if the team he signed with was the Steelers. lol

I figured he was a walk FA when we didn't sign him before UFA. We have Moats & Lemon at OLB. We're looking at investing another high round pick at OLB in the draft. Would prefer we get a monster LT or LG in round 1 so we can let either Beachum or Foster walk after this year (they are both FA's in 2016).

I have a feeling we are going to sign 1-2 CBs and draft a couple to see who sticks.

I'll start something new. maybe these players don't like playing for Tomlin. We have over the hill guys that would love to go to Titans, we know who is there, we have players running to Pittsburgh West in Arizona . We now have guys that have played five years saying pursue new interests. Maybe the writing is getting bigger in Pittsburgh. The best to Jason but who saw this in the wind.
