Jason Worilds retiring

Jesus Christ how does this turn into a Tomlin/Colbert thread. The guy doesn't want to play anymore.

I'll start something new. maybe these players don't like playing for Tomlin. We have over the hill guys that would love to go to Titans, we know who is there, we have players running to Pittsburgh West in Arizona . We now have guys that have played five years saying pursue new interests. Maybe the writing is getting bigger in Pittsburgh. The best to Jason but who saw this in the wind.

Who would love to go to the Titans, and who is running to Arizona? No confirmation on any players leaving here going anywhere else. Yes LeBeau is in Tenn, but they haven't signed anyone of our old as hell vets that we released. And the only player to sign in Arizona is Woodley, after a failed year in Oakland. Hardly writing on the all. We've had more players come BACK then we've had leave. Gay came back, Will Allen came back, Keisel came back, Harrison came back. LeBeau was a HUGE influence on a lot of people's lives, it doesn't show people not wanting to play for Tomlin.

If Worilds whole reasoning was he didn't want to play for Tomlin, he wouldn't have retired as a free agent, he wouldn't have signed his transition tag last year (since there were teams interested in him), and he definitely wouldn't have had his agent tell teams that he was uncertain about his future in football.

What makes you think its got to do with dedication and heart ? Players from the past like McMahon, Seau, Watters etc deal or dealt with concussion issues that affected their lives severely after their careers. MJD just left the game a few weeks back...........Jake Locker ...........perhaps these players are more diversified in their skillset and wish to have the ability after their careers to LEAD NORMAL lives and not rely on instructions on how to get back home written on paper.

Worilds is walkin away from close to 400K/game............where is he gonna get that kinda coin in the corporate world ? If he wants to do something other than football thats his choice. I respect that....if the passion isnt there then i dont wanna throw money at a guy whose heart isnt in it.

How do you blame management for this ?

Because some players bust their *** to take advantage of the opportunity that lies in front of them, while others get a reputation for being hot tub warriors and slow to return from injury.

It is managements fault because they failed at player evaluation. Supposedly our evaluation process involves character. We eliminate prospects because of character concerns. I feel we should draft prospects that have high character in regards to their willingness and motivation to do what it takes to take their talent to the next level, and yes you can gauge such things.

It is why Ryan Leaf is Ryan Leaf and Peyton Manning is Peyton Manning, you can have all the talent in the world, but it is up to the willingness of the individual to develop it.

To be great, It is all about desire. Otherwise you're Ricky Williams.

And yes some are upset about it because this indicates yet another failed LB choice for Art Tombert.

Roster management at the OLB position has been atrocious starting with Joey Porter being released one year prior to his DPOY season. This one stings because not only did Worilds cost us a 2nd round draft pick in 2010, (for which we gained very, very little in 5 years), he just cost us another high mid round draft pick. The OLB position is still not solidified and the roster mismanagement continues, despite yet another high draft pick

Just wait until the Jarvis Jones contract comes up............because as it stands now, that freight train is headed to the same station.

Not for nothing, but the ONLY player that would workout WITH Harrison was Jason Worilds... so take that for what it's worth.

Worilds may have seen things on the field and in the locker room that caused him to have a change of heart, too.

Different sport, but Kevin Durant hasn't, to me, been the same guy since seeing Paul George break his leg. Maybe Worilds sees some of the older guys losing their mental capacity and doesn't want to be like that?

None of you know what we may have gotten for Worilds in a comp pick...what happens if he signed a deal like say Graham got or hell even a bit more..then proceeded to get 5 sacks wherever the hell he ended ...and we sign a few guys ( we can only hope)...we were not going to get no 3rd -4th round comp pick for him..drop the he cost us a high- mid round draft pick already. We have no way of knowing what or if he would have returned in the comp pick department

That is not true.......Brad Wing was there..........

We don't know because we don't have a contract value.

Mike Wallace's contract garnered us a 3rd and he sucked balls for the dolphins. Lack of drive.

Woridls was going to get a big deal. Had he signed, its a projected 3rd or 4th round pick for us, since we do not spend a lot in free agency. Cowher was right when he said the Steelers had gone soft. I'm just surprised it was at the linebacker positon. Woodley and Worilds. And Shazier can't stay on the field.

Wallace signed a huge contract more than Worilds would have gotten...plus did we sign anyone to counter that ...I have to be honest I don't remember..
Also look at last year Sanders signed a decent deal...had a huge year...but we probably won't get squat from his signing ...who the heck did we sign that put up anything close to what Sanders did..odds are we will be lucky to get a sixth this year from Hood...thats it..there is just no way of knowing Worilds cost us anything..

.

Did not see this coming.

I saw this last night. I thought about it a bit. I wish Jason well. However ONE GUY that has to be depressed right now is Worilds' agent!

He left a lot of money on the table.

projected what the hell does that mean...I doubt there are maybe 1 or 2 people here that actually understand the comp pick formula (thats probably way to high) I sure as hell know I don't ...but you keep throwing out this projected 3rd or 4th rounder ...projected means what it says projected ...does not mean **** in real terms...and how do you know how big a deal he was going to get...you know some FO people that had an offer sheet ready for him?
We can say a lot of stuff about Worilds stuff thats on tape that we can see...the he was gonna get a big payday...he is costing us a 3rd -4th round pick is all speculation ...

Most of the d is soft not just worilds. Mitchell will hit you, but he is a punk and gets penalties. Heyward and harrison are about the only ones who bring fear. They just do not have the attitude they used to, but you see that a lot around the league. Other than ravens or seahawks you don't see mant defenses with the old fashioned attitude.

He never has to work again. He just made $10,000,000. He's young and has his health. Money left on the table is irrelevant unless you are greedy. This guy is my new hero.

The LEAGUE overall is soft........separate a guy from the ball over the middle and youre light several grand in the pocket (after they mark off yardage). Our way was the physical hard-hitting intimidation way...they league changed all of that. Out went that physical brand of defense.

Maybe he was bullied by Dave DeCastro. (Yes, that's meant to be funny on a couple of levels.)

I applaud that young man. He decided what was important to him, and made the choice. Maybe he was really on the fence, and figured he would give it a go for X+ money. There is more to life than money, and I can say that making a hell of a lot less than he did. Someone tossed around a $75K figure, I could go fishing everyday on that money, never work another day in my life. So the kids have to work instead of living off the tit. They will be better for it.

I'm not going to tell Worilds how to live his life, but I'm fairly certain he will regret this decision down the road.

Wow you don't even have to hit hard anymore either. It's all group arm tackling. I think he's stupid. I'd kill to have his job. So you walk away without even giving your best shot to be a champion. Who is drafting these guys? They sure as **** can't draft defense worth a ****...oh well he was going to play on another team anyway.

As someone else pointed out Worilds was a work out warrior and was actually in a lot of the videos Harrison posted over the last few years.

Some of these comments border on ridiculous. Saying his market was 4 million instead of 7 lol At the end of the day 4 million is more than most here will see in their life time but some people want to think he pouted and retired because he was only going to get offered 4 million dollars a year?

If anyone still follows Baron Batch, guy walked away from Football only having earned a few hundred thousand more than likely. He wasn't anything special as a player but I'm sure he could of tried to ply his trade for a few more years and earn a few hundred thousand more instead he quit, decided to become an artist. Doubt he makes the kind of money he could have even if he continued as a journeyman back up rb or third down back for some team. Always constantly asked if he misses football, always replies with no. More to life than football.

Jason Brown gave up a $37 million contract to become a farmer and grow sweet potatoes that he gives to charity, he doesn't regret it. Pat Tillman anyone?

Got smacked in the face with reality. I'm not sure who lead him to believe he was worth mega money but it just wasn't true... now he takes his ball and goes home.

Enjoy your retirement *****.
So you'd rather he be greedy and take a team's money w/ no desire to play the game...interesting.
It's laughable that some on here take Worilds' retirement personally like he was still a member of the Steelers.
Point: He was a free agent that in all likelihood wasn't coming back to the Steelers even if he had not retired.
Point: His agent was telling teams during the "legal tampering" period that Worilds was unsure about his football future (i.e. if he would play). One can imagine that this led to no hard offers and his not even scheduling any visits.
Point: the only thing that the Steelers lose is a comp pick. I know this is a big deal, but look at it as if he had received a career ending injury while on the roster (except there is no cap hit).
Point: He actually did the Steelers and other teams a favor by letting them know during the legal tampering period that he was unsure if he would continue playing. He could have taken a nice signing bonus and retired a couple or three years into the contract, leaving the team that signed him with a nice large cap hit.
More common sense - no speculation - EXCELLENT!

The LEAGUE became soft when they stopped the Steelers from hitting their opponents. Do your research...

What?

I believe he was offered much less than his ego would allow him to sign for. Probably bragged how much he was going to get and when it didn't happen he took his ball and went home. I don't buy into his story.

Do you have a source or is this just a belief? I know there was a story about the Giants, but there were no numbers attached to that

He bragged SOOO MUCH that he told his agent during the THREE DAY LEGAL TAMPERING PROCESS, to tell teams he wasn't sure about his future or whether or not he would continue to play football. CLEARLY he planned ahead of time, expecting to get his ego deflated by low ball offers, and thus had the built in excuse to retire.

Well of course ... because every FA that we don't get, or every FA that leaves the team is a diabolical genius. Mwaaa haa haa haaa
