Jason Worilds retiring

I would like to thank Miken Tombert for giving me 9+ million last year..I'm sure I could have found it in my heart to play another year if they had slapped me with the franchise/transition tag...but with these offers I'm moving on.
I wonder if he got any offers from other teams at all?

Worilds could of signed a contract that guaranteed him something like $15 or $16 million over the span of it and then just mailed it in and collected a pay check. Much respect to him for just walking away from the game and getting on with life.

I did not want him back under any circumstance.

All the best Mr. Worilds. Thank you for your services rendered to the Steeler organization.

I'd say the team's needle maybe pointing toward panic mode now...

I don't think that it is just our picks that are a problem. It seems to be rarer and rarer that higher picks have the drive to play at a NFL level. I think alot of it is society. These guys are pampered their whole life and get by on talent alone. When they get to the NFL the work ethic is not there.
I hate manziel, but have to give him credit for going to and sticking with rehab. Maybe he will come out of it a much better person/player.

Even with the subtraction of Worlids, we are still in cap hell. I don't get it. Ike, Keisel, Worlids and Debo are basically off the books and roster, and we can't bring in any decent replacements because of no space. I don't want them to overpay for any player, but we couldn't even if we wanted to. They need to get find solutions for Ben and Troy asap!

Upside, it ought to increase the chance that they bring Deebo back.

I'm torn. I love Silverback; but, we have to get younger and while he still keeps himself in awesome shape - he's 37. The kids he's playing against are 22-24 years old...I pray that JJ is working out w/ Silverback somewhere this offseason.

We can get younger, but we have nothing right now. Moats and JJ sure are not going to scare anyone. We need to sign harrison and hit on a draft pick. I would think we could get a pass rush specialist in round 3 or 4, but if we wanted a more complete olb would have to get one in 1 or 2. All i know is the D is a mess right now

He is just pouting because he couldn't get 10 million per season. His head is too damn big. He thinks he is better than he is and the Steelers and Giants and probably other teams have told him so. The Giants told him he was not worth a million per sack or $7 million per and he wanted more than that. He is worth 4 to 5 million and that is an ego crusher for him. So, he'd rather go pout in the corner. He'll be back. I have no doubt. And, it will probably be before the start of the regular season. What a tool.

Its hard to say exactly what went down, as to the rumor(s) of potential team(s) offers. He is telling us he is quiting, so for right now we take his word for that. Future, change of mind, maybe, who knows for certainty. I say more power to yaz JASON, go for your heart and beleifs. Maybe NOW, this will make the STEELERS organization become better at evaluating, mayb take serious our limited draft picks, instead of thin king they are candy bar selections (flavor ofthe day).

Salute the nation

I did not want Worilds back, but I am disgusted beyond belief at the lack of heart some of our recent high round draft picks have exhibited.

It is no wonder why we have not won a playoff game in 4 years.

and I don't blame the player, I blame management.

I agree, for the most part.
but, wouldnt the easier thing for management to have done is to tag him and pay him a ****-ton? seems to me they exercised the proper protocol in this by letting him go when they realized his head/heart wasn't in the game. A man's mind and will can change from the age of 21-22 to 27.

Was not expecting that. Good Luck To JW.

Young, wealthy, played at the highest level collegiately, played at the highest level professionally for the best franchise in the business...still has his faculties...good time to walk away. I get that us fans don't understand why, but it isn't for us to understand. These men go through a physical toil that, for many, is unimaginable. The horror stories from long-time NFL veterans are just awful. Many of them can hardly walk, many have severe memory issues...due to the concussions. I can't blame the guy at all.

He's probably going to earn a pretty good living as a coach somewhere either in High School or in college...have you seen how much those guys get paid?

Sounds like he wasn't getting much interest or the money he was demanding, gotta wonder if his heart was ever in the game. Oh well, time to draft our next starter Dupree, maybe bring in Deebo as insurance.

Very interesting and never expected this from him. I sure hope he is very business savvy and knows how to invest his money then sure this would make sense. Get out young and as a millionaire while you still have your health. That's certainly a sensible thing to do. I do however think we have not heard the last from young Mr. Worilds though. I got feeling he'll be back.

I think the money part of it definitely played a part in his decision.

If his heart weren't in the game why wouldn't he have announced his retirement after he learned he wasn't going to be tagged.

I wouldn't blame him for getting out while he still had his health but at the same time the timing is odd.

I don't think money is the problem, in all honesty. Even at $6-7M a year, that is a boatload. Then again, if he was getting more lowball offers($3-5M), then OK, money could be an issue, but he could sign a 1-year deal and prove himself with a team like the Titans or Cardinals. Saying that though and I'm purely speculating, like Mendenhall, he may have more than football that he wants to do. Could be as simple as that. Successful professionals change professions everyday.

This may to speak to why Worilds' best play came in 2013, prior to him being paid robustly, and why his play proceeded to fall off again last season.

The guy's heart was only in it enough for him to inflate his bank account, and once he achieved that to his satisfaction, he checked out.

I didn't expect him back anyway so it's no big deal to me if he wants to quit.

next

This is no real loss. We figured that we'd lose his mediocre talent to free agency anyway. My question is do we still get a comp pick for him like we would have if he had signed a big contract elsewhere? Anyone?

Nevertheless, I think he'll be back. He'll un-retire by August 1st. He will think about his decision, miss the game, and come roaring back for some team with 2 sacks this year.
