James' non-catch soon to be a catch?

The james play and the Ertz play are not the same. Both were TDs but not the same. James play was TD because his hand was underneath the ball and there wasnt conclusive evidence to overturn it. But according to the dumb rule his play was right to be questioned. The ball moved but his hand was underneath. Should not of been overturned based off the letter of replay. No conclusive evidence that his hands wasnt underneath when it moved..

Ertz play was a TD all the way he had already established a CATCH when he took three steps. He was a runner at the point he dove. He didnt have to maintain control thru the ground just break the plane of the end zone.. the plays are not similar

yep two different plays

but JJ did make a football move to extend the ball, hand under it or not that was a catch.

I believe they took the "football move" part out of the equation

Wow, good cheer for the patriots you stooge.

Both players caught the ball, established control, made a football move and cross the goal. Both were TDs. The refs knew they’d be hanged if they blew another call in the Pats favor. All it did is validate the James catch and the Steelers got ******.

You are an idiot. What the **** does seeing the plays as different has to do with my allegiance. Plays werent the same. James turns and dives. He took no steps. He never established himself as runner. Therefore bringing the NFLs stupid catch rule into play.

Meanwhile ertz tales three steps and dives the three steps kept the NFL stupid catch rule out of play so when he dove he was a runner at that point and all he had to do was break the plane of the GL. We didnt get ****** on that part we got ****** on the rules of replay..it was called a TD on the field and should of stayed that way cause there was no conclusive evidence to overturn it the call field

Now james. Three steps by Ertz changes everything. James turn and immediate dive equals no steps taken and brings the NFL going to the ground catch rule into play..

AJ is right.

I said this after the game we got ****** but james provided the lube by not running thru that catch and staying on his feet. DONT BRING THE STUPID RULE INTO PLAY IF YOU DON'T HAVE TOO. STAY ON YOUR FEET.

To me its the same act. A knee anywhere in the field equals two feet down. He was down without contact and extended his arms across the goal line. That's a catch with control until the ground makes the ball move. The nuance of the rule is total bullshit. Its not like he was bobbling the ball on the way to the ground the ground helped him make the catch. That would be a very different ruling in my opinion.

Thats just it the nfl does not. Going to the ground immediately or during the process of insuring a catch instantly starts the "Going the ground Rule" Ertz by staying on his feet for three steps and diving keeps "Going the ground Rule" right where it belongs in the garbage.

And thats what they are going to change next year if it looks and feels like a catch its a catch no more semantics

Actually they can't even interpret their own rule, if a player is going to the ground to make the catch, the rule states he must maintain possession when he makes initial contact with ground, well he did just that. Initial contact was his knee and he had possession

And it can be said he lost control. Repeat can be said but its not conclusive he did. And since its not conclusive he did play MUST STAND AS CALLED..thats where we were ******. Right there

Agreed, not conclusive, but by the letter of the law. It says he must maintain possession at initial contact with the ground, to which he did, then his shin, then his hip hit, then he reached and bobbled, but initial contact was his knee and he didn't lose possession when his knee hit

And again i wish he would of just stayed on his feet. Which he could have

Exactly. James could have fell into the fetal position and rolled into the end zone and then it’s a td. But instead he caught the ball and used his knees to push himself into the end zone. His elbow hits the ground and caused it to come lose AFTER it was a td.

Ertz was tripped up and used his feet to push over the goal line and the ground caused the ball to come out AFTER it was a td.

It’s not exactly identical but for two NFL plays they are as close as you’ll get.

This is what's messed up with the NFL. On any other play, the knee, shin, elbow, etc. are all considered to be a foot down. A player is down by contact if the elbow hits and the ground can't cause a fumble. James had his shin, knee, both feet and elbow hit with possession of the ball past the goal line before the ball hit the ground. Absolutely ridiculous that the NFL can call that anything but a touchdown. But no, they have insane rules that no one understands that lowers the quality of their product for the viewer.

It's the NFL punishing players for effort and making a play more exciting from a fan's perspective. Ridiculous that a league doesn't want either as a part of the game.

Not really..on all the plays you described those are.plays where the player has already established himself as a runner..james never established himself so he doesnt get that benefit.. HE HAD TO KEEP CONTROL ALL THE WAY THRU. The not establishing part as a runner part is what yall overlooking

Talk about the NFL rules all you want about controlling the ball all the way through. It's a bad rule and isn't consistent with anything else they do when a player has a ball in their hands.

And i agree. Everything about james play looks like a catch.. but a rule is a rule whether stupid or not. And the players know the rule. So dont go to the ground unnecessarily which james did..stay on your feet and dont put the dumb rule in play.

No different then hitting a defenseless player on a catch. Defensive guys had to adjust to it. And no longer could make a play separating a player from the ball. Offensive players had to adjust to this stupid rule if you can avoid going to the ground do it. And if you cant you better hold the ball all the way thru

even by the rule it was a catch...there was no point that the ball touched the ground and aided the reception. It was a bullshit reversal.....

James did not go to the ground unnecessarily....he caught the ball as he went to his knee..he then started to tuck the ball and reversed the motion to dive for the goal line...if he just caught it and went to a fetal position, he is likely tagged down prior to crossing the goal line...his dive gave him the TD....even with the ball rotating in his hands when his elbow hit.....

And that rule helped them advance their favorite bunny to the Super Bowl.................... The new version, if it is actually changed, will also be vague or something off the rule will still allow manipulation of games. The NFL isn't going to leave these games to chance..... They will find a "masked" way to manipulate them one way or another.
