Jameis Winston - This is the guy the Bucs wanted

With quarterbacks, probably more than with any other position, the team you go to is such a crucial factor. What if Bradshaw had ended up on the Saints, and Archie Manning was a Steeler? Manning is probably in the Hall Of Fame, and Brad would be remembered as a talented guy who got stuck on a bad team. Look at Jim Plunkett, and Doug Williams. Two talented guys who ended up on bad teams, and took a physical beating. When they finally ended up with strong franchises, they won Super Bowls, even though both were only shadows of the studs they had been when they came into the league. Steve Young looked like hot garbage in Tampa, yet when he became a Niner, we got to see one of the greatest quarterbacks in the game's history.

as a rook, you CAN'T read a defense.

Am glad Lebeau had a good day.

Still not a fan of Winston. If he has grown and starts being a benefit to society, it may change my mind.

I didn't say he was going to be good I said apparently his Football mind is considered top notch..whether or not he can translate it to the field is another thing. There have been numerous stories of him being able to recall complicated plays from memory. Maybe he can't play but that doesn't make him stupid. Maybe he needs to coach who knows.

He may indeed be smart. The key is to be able to remain calm under pressure, and do the things you're capable of. Many smart, and talented guys have failed here, while some modestly gifted guys have been wildly successful because they can perform under pressure.

I agree. And he did display that trait in college even if the pressure was self induced. He got the team in trouble but also brought them back.

Hell, he's not a Steeler or in our division ... makes me care a little less whether he fails or succeeds ... Now that Johnny Manziel character; there's a turnover filled game I watched with glee. Until I remembered that our defense wouldn't be anywhere near those turnovers. Then I cried.

My issue with him isn't his smarts or lack thereof. Watch him throw the ball. He throws off his back foot. He is a long strider. He's clumsy at times. He makes poor decisions a lot but was bailed out in college by superior players around him and him being a superior athlete. He found out today that NFL DL can catch a piss poor throw. I think he's going to have a tough year and a tough career.

Remember back at the Draft when there was speculation that MM was going to fall into the lower part of the 1st round?

1st pass as a pro in a regular season game .... pick 6!!! Looked down the receiver the whole way and then threw a duck. I hope this shi- - happens to him all day.

I know its only one game but Winston he looked more like Ryan Leaf than Peyton Manning

The Titans DB actually blew an interception that was popped up a few yards that went to a Tampa Receiver.

48.5% completion is terrible. Winston has a nice arm and can be accurate in practice, but once the bullets fly, he's a mess. I thought he was too turnover prone to be a good NFL QB.

Meanwhile Mariota looked very good.

One game. Too early to make a definite statement. But, the arrow is pointing down.

I agree with most of your post but one. Winston is far from a superior athlete. Newton, Mariotta, Kaepernick- those are superior athletes. Jamies just has a huge arm and is hard as hell to bring down (kinda like Ben). Why I think he will eventually be good is because
1.) he has a cannon for an arm
2.) and his gun slinger mentality- which by itself is a negative, but when you have someone dedicated to tape and not afraid to make a pass? Thats something specials, like a cross between Favre in Eli.

However, his feet are gawd awful. Slow and clumsy. And b/c TB OLine is the worst in the league, he isnt going to be given too much time to really correct in.

People see a black guy, and assume he's athletic. Andrew Luck is athletic, Winston is not. He's big, with a strong arm, which is what the NFL has always looked for. He didn't land in the best place, that's for sure. He better hope he doesn't get beaten up, like David Carr.

My thoughts on Winston entering the draft were thus.

He has a great arm and can be very accurate in drills; however he is very turnover prone, and had a very good team around him in college that allowed him to overcome mistakes and he a " hero ". He also had some character issues to worry about off the field.

In the NFL you can't afford two interceptions a game and hope to win.

Winston had two interceptions in his debut. It should have been three, but the DB tipped it up and the ball fell into the receivers hands.

His completion percentage of 48.5% is very low and only one of his 16 completions went for over 20 yards. He didn't look like he knew how to read a defense.

Its only one game, but the I expect more of the same especially when Tampa plays a better defense.

Mariota looked impressive. Bucs fans must be second guessing their pick big time.

Peyton is 12,000 years old. I was shocked he came back this year.

Joe

Peyton needs to be a game manager with play action. Like the older Elway was. Its only one game, but he looks shot.

I was at the game.

Mariota looked good. He didn't look like a rookie, at all.

Winston... bad decision after bad decision. His arm strength is not the problem. He mad very, very bad decisions with the ball. That pick-6... not even Favre could have put the ball through that tight of a window. Had he lobbed it a bit, he may have had his man... or thrown it out of bounds. Late in the game, he tried forcing another pass between three defenders.

Bucs fans are not happy right now.

Which was the problem with him even in college. The difference was that college players couldn't make him pay. NFL guys are eating his lunch. I don't understand the "He has a great football mind". How in the hell can you have a great football mind and make so many mistakes. It isn't like he is reading the defense and just not able to get the ball there. He plays dumb. Throwing into triple coverage, trying to go over a DL, and getting popped because you don't have enough sense to get down makes me think his pre- draft hype was just that.

I watched him a ton in college and he looks identical to what I saw Sunday. Bad footwork, bad reads, and an elephant on stilts. He's clumsy. Plus he has a long stride. He's going to have a ton of fumbles, sacks and picks in the NFL. And he was playing against Tenn... a team that was 30th in points and 29th in yards last year. They were one of the worst defenses in the league last year. I don't think they'll be great this year because they don't have the players.
