Is the Steelers Front Office aware FA started?

There is a problem with the "sense of urgency" argument over Ben.

It stated that way almost as if every time Ben goes out and plays, he is 25-30, 350 yds, and 3 TDs. That just isn't the case. I know now I will get the obligatory, "Do you remember when they didn't have a franchise guy?" Damn right I do. And I think Ben is great. But the truth is he isn't that damn near perfect QB that you can just guarantee will play great week in and week out.

The point is I think the Steelers know this. They can sign a CB to 14 million and make you feel happy. But they don't win unless the stars they have play better at big moments, and Ben just hasn't played that great in the playoffs lately. So a lot of this the window closing stuff, does Ben know that? Will he work to improve his game in little areas, like not making a wrong read at the goal line, changing a play and getting picked?

I hear ya on that. Ben was great early in the season (part due to Coates playing well). Once he got injured, he was never the same. Don't know if he was still hiding and injury but his accuracy and even play calls from the line just never came back to him.

Or course I say that still giving high praise to Ben as I would take him over any QB in Steelers history not named Bradshaw and over most QB's in the league. I hate to see the years when he hangs them up. I remember the Cliff Stoudt, Mark Malone, Kordell, etc. years and don't want to go back there.

Having "all that talent" on offense doesn't mean **** when they aren't on the field. How many games did Bryant, Wheaton, Coates, Green, and even Bell miss the last 2 seasons? Hell, they were down to #3 and #4 running backs in the playoffs last year! The only consistent has been Brown.

Hard to build chemistry when your team changes so much.

Yea, that's right. But how does signing a CB for 14 million solve that problem? They keep having something trip them up, injuries, guys don't play as well as they could in big spots, suspensions, that all the FA in the world isn't going to fix.

It's not like I would be against them signing a guy like that. I object to the premise that doing something like that would fix everything.

Even after the injury, Ben was on absolute fire at Heinz. Ben had exactly two players on his side: AB and Bell. There was, almost literally, nobody else. The loss of Miller, Martavis, the injuries to Green and Coates, and the light not coming on for Rogers until late in the season were a huge reason for some of Ben's iffy play. During the season, I was not one to stand up for Ben. Slash and myself went at it for a couple weeks about it. However, these were some pretty big ******* losses that no one wants to give credit for. We have a healthy offense, I still believe we're gonna see our QB do great things. Hell it was just two years ago he lead the league in passing yardage. He ain't done yet.

criticizing Ben for not being at top level when having to throw to the likes of Hamilton, Ayers, Jesse James, ****** Coates, Grimble and even Rogers is asking for too damn much

I'm not so sure. Brady had his own crew of castoffs and white receivers, and they blew us out of the water.

If the Pats threw us a soft zone defense we threw at Brady.......well....****. who am I kidding....our game plan wouldn't have changed...we would have run the exact same offense. My one big criticism off our coaching staff is that we don't make any adjustments at all during games. On both sides of the ball. Might be the only team in the NFL with that attitude.

**** that...Brady didn't need any help that day from anyone...his WR's were open on every play all game long...Just a pathetic display of a defensive game plan by Tomlin Butler and anyone else that had their fingers involved in it. Just sad.

Free agent DE Tyson Alualu is visiting the Steelers on Monday.

The former No. 10 overall pick in 2010, 30-year-old (in May) Alualu missed the first two games of his career last season. While not overwhelmingly talented, Alualu is a reliable body up front who can play multiple positions along the line at 6'3/304. In Pittsburgh, he'd probably rotate at 3-4 end.

Looking at this offseason I started to think. Imagine this is March 2016 and not 2017 and then think if we got Kniles Davis from the Chiefs for nothing, and Justin Hunter from the Titans for nothing, and then signed Coty Sensabaugh to a two year deal worth peanuts compared to his 3 year 15 million dollar deal he got with the Rams. This offseason would look pretty good if it was 2016.

And got Tyson Alualu to boot!

Not sure how/why he is glossing over the two most important positions on defense. Pretty much saying the offense is stacked but is thin at quarterback and left tackle.

He's not. He's all about edge and corner in the draft. He's just taking into consideration that the FO does things a certain way and paying big money on FAs is not one of them. At least not on CBs commanding 10+mil per season. Too much risk in that.

I agree, Davis, Hunter and Sensabaugh are fine thrift shop picks given that they already proved they can produce in the NFL, theirs will hopefully be career redemption stories

Yep.Bryce McCain, James Farrior, Kimo, Ryan Clark, Brent Alexander. None of those guys broke the bank and all ended up being good to varying degrees for the Steelers. Tyson is the only guy really pushing 30. Maybe a couple of these guys pan out.
